Bands with only one guitarist
« on: 21 May 2008, 16:39 »

Because Google has failed me again.

We lost a potential guitar player and the only songs our band can play together at the moment are songs with lead and rhythm guitars.  Anyone know some good rock or blues bands with only one guitar player?

I would be willing to bet that you can arrange the rhythm guitar into another part. Basses can do this pretty well as can keyboards or a little bit of playing with the lead guitar.

You don't need the same instrumentation to play the same song, in fact, messing with it could help you with your sound given the fact that covers are not good if they are a carbon copy of the original recording.

WTF?

The Who, Led Zeppelin, The Ramones, Black Sabbath...there are so many I can't even begin to name them all. If you need to fill up the space, have the bass play busier, or you could bi-amp him/her, or do the same with the guitar. There's a lot of ways to solve the problem of having more parts than players, just be creative!

Deerhoof on Friend Opportunity! They did the trio thing pretty well, I think, though they still rock harder with two guitarists.

Black Sabbath is probably the most kickass band ever with just one guitarist.

I highly recommend covering "Sweet Leaf" (downtuning unecessary).

White stripes were the first obvious choice.

Except that Jack White overdubs to fuck, his supposed 'minimalist' sound can feature two or three different guitar parts going at once.

on their last three albums, yes. but not their first four or five...you know, the majority of their recorded work? and he plays all those newer songs live anyway without any of the over-dubbing and they are still great.

i fully support the White Stripes suggestion. oh oh oh and The Black Keys!

First four or five plus three recent ones? Don't they only have six? I'll admit my Stripes knowledge is not the widest, but I thought their debut was only ten years ago.

And I think we'll have to agree to disagree on the 'still great live' thing.

yeah, i was just guessing because i'm at work and had to do some things but i just checked and yeah they only have six full-length records out. i thought it was more because i have, like, eight albums by them on my iPod plus a bunch of unreleased tracks.

so yeah, my numbers were off but my point remains valid. although, i take back the "majority" statement.

also, there is nothing wrong with overdubbing.

P.S. DID I MENTION THE BLACK KEYS YET? I'M PRETTY SURE THAT I DIDN'T. LISTEN TO THEM NOW.

Dammit. I was about to suggest a load of bands like Sonata Arctica and Symphony X, not to mention Adagio, Kiuas and Dream Theater. Then I noticed you wanted rock or blues. Ah well. A man can dream that one day someone else my enjoy the same music as him :)

You know, I think there's actually quite a large community of people that like music like that.

From what I remember, it's some kind of cult that revolves around this strange thing they call 'prog metal', in which they hold these massive tributes to their god, Mike Portnoy.

He still pulls them off live though. Even without the rest of his band, those songs still slay in a solo acoustic set. The solution is obvious! Just learn to play like J Mascis and your troubles will be over.

When they only had one guitarist, at live shows John would just play all the parts at once on his guitar. Amazing.

I don't recall saying there was. The guy was asking for songs that'd sound good with one guitar, and if your guitarist overdubs loads - Dave Navarro, I'm looking at you - then it might sound a bit thin live.

Matt Pike does overdub a little on record, but he sounds ten times as massive live.
