There is no excuse for me...
« on: 19 May 2008, 10:51 »

Hey guys, new poster, found QC last week, read from 1-1145 almost non-stop.

I find myself humiliated at my lack of musical education (being a musician, non-professional, but regular player). I hate what I hear on the radio, but rather than searching for newer, cooler stuff, I have been listening to old stuff that I know to be awesome.

Anyway, I have started trying to expand my horizons over the last few months:

Currently in my rotation:

Opeth - Watershed
The Flaming Lips - At War With the Mystics
Arch Enemy - Wages of Sin (yes, I got it on recommendation of Jeph)
The Field - From Here We Go Sublime (ditto)

Would anyone have time to recommend a few new nuggets for me to enrich myself with?

I am Dave Grohl.
What? How did I post in the wrong thread AGAIN? That's the second time this week.

On topic, we don't listen to music any more, now we go to shows to see people play golf on stage. Sorry we can't help you.

Oh wow, the new Opeth leaked? I'm gonna have to nab that. I had no idea it was ready to be released already.

Anyway, one thing you should do is read through the music blog. Lots of excellent bands have been mentioned in there. Also, if you have a spare few hours, try browsing through the mediafire thread. Lately, it has been a bit of a clusterfuck but it contains some real gems.

Also, if you like that Opeth record, try getting Blackwater Park, Still Life, and My Arms, Your Herse. Those are my favorite three Opeth records. Also, if you dig the Flaming Lips, try getting their pre-The Soft Bulletin, as well as The Soft Bulletin.

Hope that helps!

Take a few genres and find out who are the most notable artists within the genres. For example, take Breakcore; you could listen to some Venetian Snares. Take Math Rock; you could try Hella.

Also try the 'artist connections' feature on Last.fm, that always helps me find some good music.

Guy, recently I've been getting into braille. I've been touching a lot of smooth-core stuff, but I think I might be ready to branch out into the edgier things. Any suggestions?

I tired what you're doing alittle while ago and I found these guys great:
Radical Face or Electric President. Same guy so both great
Iron and Wine. Sam Beam is awesome, and even jesus would evy his beard.
Broken Social Scene. Just listen to them and you'll see.

There's soo many more bands but these guys are my top tier of favorites.

Thank you!

I was going to say June of 44, but I thought they were post-rock, a la Slint and Bedhead and such.  Polvo are also fucking boss.

As far as Math Rock: Hella is amazing.

Also, I think Opeth's latest albums have been by far their best, since Blackwater Park. Damnation, Deliverance and Ghost Reveries are all prog/heavy metal masterstrokes.

Hella are amazing when they're a duo. When they add additional musicians they can become very, very bad and make me run away to listen to Orthrelm instead to feel better.

Also, considering your \m/ factor;

Mosquito Control - Isis
Levathian and/or Remission - Mastodon
Monochrome - Helmet

YES.  YES.  YES.

Also, take Baroness for a spin.  Their newest, the Red Album, is stellar.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

Honestly, Ben, sneaking stuff in that you love is EXACTLY what I was looking for to get me out of my rut.

Now I have a list a mile long of tasty tunage to digest.

Thanks again.

Dude in all honesty, just fall upon the mediafire thread like a hungry child to its mothers teat. Although all that stuff on bens list is a great start and if you tear through every album on that list before touching anything else in there you will probably have a nice range of music to argue with us about.

I was doing braille scarification way before you were into braille.

braille is a very funny word.

As far as body art goes, it seems pretty cool until you realize that it is completely invalidated whenever a person gets goosebumps.
