"Them"
« on: 25 May 2008, 05:50 »

my friend just showed me this new program on BBC called "Them". basically it is a show that presents stereotypical members of certain "scenes" - for want of a better word - and their interests and stuff.

The thing is, I don't know if it's a serious tv show, or an hilarious satire.

the bit where she says her band is called 'Panda Wolf' makes that all worth it.

I think the "indie" girl doesn't know what she's talking about.  Am I right to assume that?

I'm not really sure how spray on skintight jeans became imperative to "bein' an indie" in her mind. Oh, and you have to love them playing Green Day in the background.

Why do ska bands always have to teach the crowd how to skank?

Whether or not the show is supposed to be a straight up comedy, I'm not sure, I haven't finished watching yet, but 'Amy' is pretty obvious satire.

Some of this is kinda like,"Okay.. maybe."

But seriously, is this satire or is this actually serious? Because I totally know people that would say/act like this especially for TV

I think the most disturbing thing in the series, that I've watched, is the fact that there are clothing shops in the world lit entirely with blacklights.  Blacklights freak me out.  Don't you want to see what clothes look like in normal light before you buy them?  I don't get it.

No, dogg. It was just a collection of videos of rally cars crashing.
I watched that once and I was afraid to open my front door.
all afraid a rally car was gonna come shootin' at me.

This was......stupid.  I can understand British comedy....but this was presented without that sort of realization that it's not serious. I don't know....it was just....eugh, 7 minutes for each of these videos is too long.

I don't understand why no one realizes that this isn't satire. Its a bunch of high school kids proudly living up to stereotypes. That is typically how it goes in high school.

Reading the descriptions, it seems like a mosher is a British term for rocker, so I think it kinda works.

But do show like this actually exist? I don't watch tv that much. Why would someone watch this? I couldn't watch any of those videos for more than a few seconds, and thats purely for voyeuristic reasons.

It's a spoof. Look at the made up Latin names for each "group".

Also, it has to be a spoof. I refuse to believe that this is the sort of thing the BBC do with our licensing fees.

My feeling is that the interviewees are genuine, and their audience will see them as genuine, but the producers are sending them up mercilessly.  It's the BBC, after all.

No were not.

Well maybe I am but not all British people.

This series makes me want to poke myself in the eye. Its 100% genuine and these and so many people like them fall into this catergory. But they are all the same but all just fashion trends.
At my college there were so many people who you could place in one of these boxes, luckily there were enough people who didnt just fall into a catergory, if they liked indie music they liked it but they didnt neccesarily have to wear 'indie' clothes for example.

If I ever realise I have confined myself into any such group, where the music I like is perfectly matched by the clothes I wear, my hair and what I do on my weekends, I will have to either change or shoot myself in the head.

Actually, the last two parties I went to confirmed for me that, without knowing it, I have unwittingly stepped into a perfect little stereotypical niche by virtue of what I wear, what I do with my free time, who I do it with, who I tend to be attracted to, and what sort of little hobbies I have.

It was a little unsettling until I realized that all the people who looked like me were actually pretty cool guys who I'd probably be pretty good friends with if we'd known each other before falling into the same subculture.  It's when you look around you and realize that you actually look like a lot of people you don't like, that's when you're in trouble.  I figure I can accept being stereotyped by people who see me as a faceless representation of a subculture, if actually being a part of the subculture itself leads me to meet people that are interesting and friendly enough.

I never thought of "techie" as a clique in the first place.  At least if I applied the term "techie" it was referring to the stage hands in the drama club during the organization of a play.  Most people that they're labeling "techies" are usually just called "geeks" or "nerds" as far as I knew.

I tried to watch these videos, I really did, because I figured they'd be fun to laugh at. They were just excruciatingly boring though and after a few seconds I kept clicking to another video. For what it's worth, the furthest I got in any of the clips was the ska one.
