Yeah the "don't buy anything till later" rule is a lot more applicable when you're talking to a beginner who is convinced he needs really exotic effects. The point is to remind you that having a somewhat decent command of your instrument comes before you start playing with toys, and to keep you from spending too much in case you find you don't like it later on. Overdrive and reverb are not particularly exotic (they come standard on many amps), and I think wanting those pedals after 6 months of playing is pretty reasonable. Otherwise I wouldn't have recommended 3 of them.

That said, if you start to feel you need a compressor pedal or a volume pedal, take a deep breath, count to 10, and then wait a few years.

just bored kids. Kids that are over 21.

Your avatar captures that rather well.

Cheers.

And thanks for the help y'all. Considering the part about amps coming already equipped with those effects, I may just go that route.

What you should look into, though, is a bass EQ (equalizer) pedal.

They're a fucking godsend and I'd even say they're more useful than guitar equalizers.

Be forewarned though that they're not in the "fun" category of pedals that make wacky noises come out of your amp. They just make your bass sound a hell of a lot better once you learn how to use them.

Yeah, and I'd probably put an EQ down as something to worry about once you've actually got the hang of your instrument and have started worrying about tone and that. I mean, fuck, I've been playing bass for 12 years and 99% of the time I just set the EQ to what I know works and leave it.

Yeah, if you're a bass noob an EQ is probably going to be mostly useless. When you need one you'll get one, and until then you probably won't know what to do with it anyway.

I love Line6 gear. Bass Pod is a lot of fun to screw around with. Mostly you can probably just do without effects pedals for now, though. When it comes to gear I believe in buying what you need; in other words, you get the effects that you want in order to find the sound that you're looking for. That's always worked for me in the past, but then I'm a bit crazy and I usually have a very clearly defined idea of exactly what tone I'm going for in my head. So I can just do my best to emulate it with the real world stuff.

YMMV.

dun da da dun da dun

theory, music theory, bass players on my opinion should be the most widely knowledged person in music theory in the band

know about flowing in keys, especially for your sweet little bass fillers

and understanding timing like a drummer, seriously, do that

Okay pretty generic help but here we go,
i've been playing bass for like 4 years
self taught for 3 and 1/2 of them
get yourself a music theory book (sight reading for bass is a good satrt)
a teacher is important if you want to play with others but not quite required
the truth is you just have to play
if something doesnt feel right change it
dont feel compelled to play exactly like someone else
even on something on like how to hold the bass, people are different and so be different
do what is comfortable
and if you have anyother questions do be afraid to message me!

of sonic youth than everyone else, i don't like em and i think its noise, big deal

i actually learned to play drums to give an enhancement to my bass playing, you'd be surprised how well a few months of dedicated drumming work

can do to your bass playing abilities, i certainly was

Not bad for a beginner bass, not anything mindblowing past that though.

So a friend gave me that peavy bass I posted about a few months back, I've been playing with a friend whose really good at guitar and can kinda play just about anything with strings and is a really patient teacher. Now I need a practice amp, my budget is around $100, Thinking about this peavy http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Peavey-MAX-126-Bass-Practice-Combo?sku=481459

any better ideas for that price range?

Well this is the practice amp I used, since I got one of those squier boxes that comes with a bass and amp when I started playing. It suited my purposes for learning quite nicely. Though to be honest anything you get is going to be far from the most wonderful sounding thing on earth. Really any small amp that can make a noise will be good for you.
/my humble and maybe outright bad opinion.

The best things to do are listen to the bass in the music you listen to, watch some bass players play (I think I read someone recomending Youtube. That usually is a great place.), and try to develope a style comfortable for you. Oh yeah and practicing is kinda important.
