Hey, it's the only way to deal with them. A swift end. Like Old Yeller except we never loved them, nor was there a bear. Now that movie is what makes me sad. That poor, stupid dog.

Hahaha, I loved that comic.  No, you are not a bad indie kid for enjoying Bright Eyes.

From Autumn to Ashes are fucking terrible, though.

I feel like I should admit that I have a soft spot for Dashboard Confessional, even though I don't listen to him anymore.

Why wouldn't they?  He's done some amazing things.  Letting Off the Happiness is still an incredible and diverse debut, Fevers and Mirrors, the Every Day and Every Night EP, and Lifted are pretty much perfectly-crafted for the sound and mood they're going for, and I'm Wide Awake It's Morning has a lot of very daring and beautiful moments.  I haven't really given his latest one much of a chance because I don't like his political songs and it seemed like he was going for more of those.

I also rather enjoyed the Desaperacidos album.

yeah Cassadaga was a lot more political, but it was a lot of it was also kind of apocalyptic and he used his way with words very well to get some awesome imagery going for it. I like his older stuff better, particularly Lifted but there were still some really good moments on the new(est) cd

emo spiderman

now if only Conor Oberst would strut his stuff in a jazz club, the world would be a better place.

I still don't understand the hate for Bright Eyes, is it just that he's an easy target?  Greg Dulli is just as self loathing, but I never hear anyone rip into the Afghan Whigs because of it.

Yeah, Dulli gave off that vibe that if you made fun of him, he would smash his almost-empty bottle of gin and thrust it in your face.

Then he got fat.

Greg Dulli wasn't self loathing. That's the craziest thing I've heard all day! If anything, he was in love with himself (and probably still is)! He didn't get into fights as much as people seem to think either, but he had a sharp mouth and would almost certainly fuck your girlfriend.

If you wanna make fun of sad people, let's make fun of Trent Reznor.

I'm gonna try and translate the lyrics to that song. I think it fits in with the whole "I'm a slut and loving it" thing he had going on for a while.

"Girls who I have yet to sleep with: I only think about sex. You're not gonna care, because sex is something I am SERIOUSLY good at. But this last girl, she wanted a little bit more. I just wanted fuck a lot. None of that 'serious' stuff. I felt ashamed for a while, since she was a nice girl, and I'm not much of a nice guy, but since she left I have been scoring every night, just the way I like it. I mean, it's great right now. I'm sure that one day I'll regret all this fucking around that I do, but I don't feel like worrying about that right now. Still, that girl. She was really really into me. I made her really angry. But I guess I really don't want to settle down.
*some time later*
Hey baby, is this as good for you as it is for me?
*lights cigarette while doing it doggy style*
aaaw yeeeeaaaaaaaah."

Edit: Typing that was actually really fun. This thread is now about paraphrasing sad songs.

You make a good point, but its the "Now that I'm ashamed, it burns" and "Am I OK? I'm sure I'm not" lines that stick out for me.  Sure, he still goes out pulling left right and centre, but underneath there's regret or something.

Now I have a terrifying image of Mr Dulli in a dark fucking period ala Dewey Cox.  Thanks for that  :-P

Dulli definitely has the regret/I'm-a-fucked-uip-guy thing going in many songs.  Yeah, he also has times, often within the same song, where he's confident and assertive, but I don't think you can deny that he often channeled the "chain smoking at a bar drinking whisky furiously and hating his decisions" thing.  Not to mention that even when he was being confident it usually came across as the kind of "I'm a super awesome asshole to hide the fact that I'm a fucked up dude" act.

Conor Oberst gets picked on because he's openly sensitive, self-deprecating, self-loathing, and looks like anyone could beat him up if they wanted to.

I don't really have much of a problem with their fans, either. Sure, you get a couple super-obnoxious teen girls who want to sleep with Conor Oberst and paint pictures of him

But the majority of them are pretty okay

When I went to see him there were a ton of teenage girls surrounding the stage. Admittedly, that was because you could only drink beer in the beer tent set up in the corner of the venue.

It was the worst possible venue.

pretty good tune but i prefer his other songs when it's not so whiney...i liked IWA,IM but not too much else. His new album was decent.

overall i think he's a decent artist, highly overrated early on but in recent times i don't think he's been hyped as much but has improved his music.

To the guy's credit, whilst he may have started off on a big self-loathing endless crisis of existence and translated that into brilliant music, when he started getting popular and banging Winona Ryder and the like, he stopped moaning about being unloveable and started moaning about the terrible comedowns he was getting from all the coke, instead.

It just seemed a little more realistic than someone like Chris Carrabba making a career out of singing 'oh woe is me no-one will ever love me I'm so ugly and dickish' to the sound of a few thousand teenage girl's cotton panties dropping to the floor at the mere mention of his name. Sure, there's cultivating misery and self loathing in order to entertain the masses, but then there's plain insulting. At least Conor Oberst manages to do it with some grace.

Some of Bright Eyes songs are musically good.

But his lyrics are self important and faux-poetic to the point of being cringe inducing.  He overemotes and overproduces worse than U2, and panders to college liberals worse than Tina Fey.

Bright Eyes would be the favorite act of those people who booed Dylan when he went electric.  He's this century's Joan Baez.
