Holy shit guys, the past few days have been amazing. Like, I have seen so much awesome music my brain can't even begin to explain it to itself.

Basically I thought yesterday was going to be a bit of a low point, but I ended up seeing Grizzly Bear, Polvo, Built to Spill, So Cow, Dum Dum Girls, Sunny Day Real Estate, Nana Grizol (who were staying in the same hostel as us, and we had drunken hanging out with), Matt and Kim, the Pet Shop Boys (who actually were fantastic), Health (this was actually a semi religiuos experience, no joke), and Fake Blood.

And yesterday I saw Low, Spoon, Wilco, the Pixies, Diplo, Yeasayer, and the New Pornographers. Basically, every song that I heard yesterday I knew all the words to.

Yes.

They fall firmly into the category of "bands that don't really deviate from the recorded versions of their songs, but play each song with such skill and tightness that by the end of the show you're a bit awe-struck." Hopefully you're seeing them in a small venue, though. (Note also that they probably won't play many songs from earlier than Let's Get Out of This Country. They'll probably play "Teenager" and maybe one or two others from Underachievers Please Try Harder, but for the most part the set will be recent songs.)

Mountain Goats are playing here on the 2nd, for real cheap. Worth checking out?

(I only came in here to brag that I am going to see LCD Soundsystem and Caribou tomorrow)

Just won some tickets to Dappled Cities on the seventeenth of June.

Cool.
They don't suck so much for an Australian band.

I was at Primavera Sound. In Barcelona. Cheap tickets. Awesome lineup. Never sold out. Sleep in a bed. Hang out in a nice city before the music starts. Not have to deal with shit.

Going back next year, doesn't even matter what the lineup is.

How did you think the lineup was, in terms of overlapping? I figured since it's such a short period of time and that many bands, you must miss a bunch..

It was the most painful choices of my life.

I ended up going with the "This band will be expensive to see in the future, or I might not get the chance again" principle. A lot of the less popular bands also played in other places in the city during the day or days before and after the festival. For example, King Khan & the BBQ Show, Smith Westerns, Dum Dum Girls, Real Estate, the Ganglians, played in a park on the other end of town outside of official festival times. I also managed to catch a lot of bands that came through Glasgow's Stag & Dagger festival before heading to Primavera.

But I do think the festival made some weird choices in starting bands at exactly the same time.

The most upsetting choice was Broken Social Scene versus Tortoise, mainly because it was obvious that I was going to go see Broken Social Scene, but seeing Tortoise would have been really awesome as well.

Caribou was a no-show, so some band called Holy Ghosts opened instead. They really sucked.

Fuuuuuuuuck, that looks immense. Particularly since Ding Dong Dead had to cancel their Leeds date when they toured a while back, and their split with Moby Dick is excellent.

To lessen my jealousy, Magrudergrind from DC are playing a matinee gig this weekend. Sweet deal.

Last night @ Issue Project Room:
"On June 4th Grouper will perform pieces from her album Way Their Crept for the first time outside of Portland, as well as new keyboard material in a special set at Issue Project Room.  These pieces have not been possible to perform before because of the logistics of playing live with an instrument as heavy and fragile as the keyboard used.

A second special set of a new tape collage called “Ascend/Descend” will be performed through the IPR’s 16 channel surround-sound system on June 4th."

I was there and it fucking ruled!

Get on it! They were great, as were The Afternoon Gentlemen and Joe Pesci. I'm amazed some people had the energy to mosh though, the room was a total sweatbox. Just standing up for the duration of the set was gruelling enough for me. I still don't understand how my mate Rich managed to drum for Joe Pesci, sing for the Gents straight afterwards and is going to be playing one more JP set when they support Magrudergrind again tonight in Newcastle. Brutal.

Camera Obscura were pretty great.  I felt like I would have enjoyed it more were I more familiar with their music; after a while, all the songs sort of started to bleed together and feel the same.  They played them all super well though

Opening was a band called The Love Language, who were also good and had great energy on stage

T'was a good night, overall

pukkelpop

The problem with this festival is that I've already roped my friends who would be into this music into going to one festival this year (which, granted, was awesome). I doubt they would be down for it again. And my friends here in Belgium could be convinced to buy tickets for Blink 182.

But that's okay cause on that day the flaming lips, garcia, fuck buttons, and so i watch you from afar, minus the bear, frightened rabbit and chase & status are also playing. Plus, because there's so many bands I've already seen, I wouldn't feel too bad about missing so many bands.

I'm thinking about this, and probably will definitely do it if I have a job this summer once I get back to Edinburgh.

Hmm, I saw Arcade Fire two days ago at Longueuil. It was supposed to be a secret "200 people" show, but the media got involved, and more than 8000 people came. It was really great though. The new stuff kicks ass live.
