Chess!
« on: 15 Jun 2008, 18:30 »

I've just recently gotten back into the game after years and years of indifference, mainly due to this wonderful, wonderful site.

Anyone else 'round these parts play?  Because it would be sweet if we could pull together some sort of QC-wide Tournament Extravaganza.

I guess I am okay.  I usually beat my friends, but I don't think that is saying much.

Is it bad that I was throughly disgruntled when I came in here expecting this to be about the musical and not the vastly more popular game?

Hooray for crappy 80's musicals that spawn hit roller-rink singles.

I don't have the patience for chess.

I DO have the patience for spending hours reading Wikipedia articles about chess theory and strategy, though.

I happen to know that entire song by heart D.K., so don't feel bad at all.

I know most of the musical by heart, actually, despite it being overall a piece of shit. The music's actually pretty great, but the plot and characters are pure ass.

This is actually one of my favorite songs ever. Watch it till the end--the whole song is one long crescendo.

Alright, thread de-railment over. Apologies.

At first I thought that was hilarious, but after following some links and seeing what they're trying to do and where they're going with that I have a lot of respect for it.

For a while we played chess in school. We even had a mini tournament that we were gonna start. Everybody then proceeded to leave school and it never happened. Haven't played chess since but it would be quite good to get back into even though I am pretty poor at it.

I like playing chess. I only get any sort of good if I play regularly which I have done occasionally. Ive never got near master-status or anything but my high school chess team (which I was on) won a few local comps. Im that cool people.

I used to be okay at it, but then I lost heart because the chess game on my computer is impossible to beat (yes, even on easy) and then I just stopped playing. Maybe I'll join up though and relearn it.

Regarding the actual game of chess, I only actually learned how to play it about a year ago, and I've lost every single game I've ever played. I think I'm doing it wrong.

It's not really possible to "do chess wrong".  You just need more practice, I'd imagine.

(That is, unless you can't even grasp what pieces do what.  Then you really are doin it wrong)

I used to think I was pretty good. I was invited to be on the chess team, at least. Then I played my boyfriend. I've still haven't won a game. But then again, his dad taught him and his dad is one of the types of guys who practices at something until he's the best at it and he's also not the type to let his kids win when they play him. My boyfriend has beaten him several times now and he considers it one of his proudest moments. When we started playing my boyfriend told me that he was "just okay" at chess, then beat me 5 times in a row.

QC should get one of those ridiculously expensive chess spin-off sites like the Wu Tang Clan.

this is the best thing I have ever seen.

I thought chessboxing was widely known to be hilarious, considering I was going to post the exact same thing.
Also, I think ESPN did a big thing on it a while back.

Chessboxing is awesome.  Non-boxing chess is also awesome.  I've been playing since I was 6 with varying degrees of seriousness.  I'm up for a game most evenings, just PM me.  Also, I'm an ICC member -- a great service that is well worth the fee ($30 a year for students, $60 a year for non-students).  You can watch GMs and IMs play speed chess pretty much 24/7.  Chess.com looks interesting but doesn't always seem to work.
