Quite possibly one of the best bands ever and yet no international recognition. Anyone else a fan and/or have a theory as to why they still struggle to be heard outside of Canada?

I saw them a 10klf last year and they were a lot of fun.  Dunno if they will ever make my "albums I need" list but would see them live if they came through St. Louis again.

Do you know what would be tragically hip? If you were in the path of an oncoming truck and your pants were to tight to let you leap out of the way.

Actually, though, I like the band. Not a whole lot, but enough to have listened a few times. I'm not sure they really need "international recognition", but most things don't, really.

Whatever dude, anything I like is obviously worthy of international attention.

I've got quite a love affair going for the Fully Completely album and also the track "Nautical Disaster," but I lived in Detroit for 20-something years and was lucky enough that the 'Modern Rock' station played a ton of good Canadian music over the years. I'm sure that if I'd lived here in Denver my whole life, I wouldn't know anything about them, sadly.

Okay, I haven't listened to these guys, but their name has floated past me before.
So, let's see a link of some sort. Or, even better! Upload one of their albums to the mediafire thread and spread your joy!

Every time I hear one of their songs on the radio, I go "hey, this doesn't sound too bad." Then Gord Downie comes in and ruins it all. I just find that their songs are relatively tuneless and are all too similar to be interesting. Don't get me wrong, the musicians are good, just not the writing or the singer. Any time I ever say this I get called "Un-Canadian".

I think you're in the wrong place, Jenna.  See, we don't actually listen to music here.  We just pretend.

I thought we just did google searches and combed myspace trying to see who can claim to like the most obscure band, all while insulting the intellect and heritage of the poster above us?

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

Love, hate and people wasting space, this has it all!

I like Gord Downie's voice, it's unmistakable. Nothing can make me like a new artist less then when I hear something by them they sound exactly like a more famous performer and they are trying to copy both style and sound. Even if the stuff is good, it'll take me awhile to warm up to it if I ever do.

So, I guess you wouldn't like Sloan at all.

These guys are pretty good!  They are excellent musicians, but I just cannot bear listening to them, because they sound so much like Classic Rock bands here in the States, and that stuff bores me to no end.  It might have something to do with indirectly being forced to listen to it just about all my life and growing bored of it.  It actually surprises me that they aren't widely recognized outside of New England.

Insightful, thanks!

Sloan, I herd Sloan awhile back and really didn't pay much attention, but I think you bringing them up here is going to make my go use my awesome youtube prowess and give them another listen.  I am always looking to add to my playlist. Part of why I like it here.. mostly..

the two-disc, fan-chosen, greatest hits that came out last year (the year before?) is a really good introduction to the band, and for me all I really need from them.
