« on: 30 Jun 2008, 16:39 »

I know it's a crime but I only recently got into radiohead... and they are perhaps my favourite band now.

suggestions of similar tasting bands (perhaps less well known ones even) to listen to?

thank you, people of the forum.

As far as the Kid A / Amnesiac era goes, you could delve a bit into the electronic influences of those albums. Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Autechre, etc. If it's just the general weirdness that you like, Scott Walker makes the same sort of "difficult" music.

As far as the earlier stuff goes, well, it seems like the british music press has been trying to find a substitute for the last 5 years at least. You could look through some of those flavors of the week, maybe you'll find something that catches your interest.

Lis Er Stille, maybe?

Hell, he'd probably like a lot of post-rock in general.

Would Brainiac suffice?  There's probably a few songs off of OK Computer that might sound like Brainiac.

...Maybe?

The lead singer of Holler, Wild Rose obviously stole Thom Yorke's vocal chords. They sound really similar. They're also a pretty decent band.

I've actually always thought the Sigur Ros lead singer Jonsi has similar vocals, with all that falsetto shit.

Martin Grech has had his warbly post-rock experimentalist moments, although he does tend towards the louder, more rock/metal end of things these days. The Open Heart Zoo album is probably worth a listen for a Radiohead, uh, head.

Grandaddy has a touch of the Radiohead sound, Muse can''t get over OK Computer, and South uses some similar techniques to make pretty tunes. Go!

LCD Soundsystem has some early-Radiohead-esque stuff.  Really moody and deep.  They aren't as layered or complex though.

Madahoochi has a few Radiohead-inspired songs in their older works, Science is the one that immediately springs to mind, though they've updated most of their songs to a more upbeat feel so it may not show now.

Obviously, some of their (Radiohead's) non-techno influences like Talking Heads / Brian Eno / David Byrne.

You could just get a mouse to vomit into your ear then run a mild electric current through it.

That's pretty similiar to Radiohead.

Rat's don't, not sure about all rodents.

If mice do vomit though, Thom Yorke is what they would sound like.

I'm gonna go with Pink Floyd. Division Bell is probably the closest you'll get as far as sounding like Radiohead (although loads of people say it's shit, blah blah blah) but a good deal of their stuff has had a clear influence on them.

I think Thom Yorke cited Sigur Ros as an influence at one point. But you should probably listen to Sigur Ros anyway.

Buddy, it's one of my favourite of the Floyd albums. 'High Hopes' was my number one Floyd song for a long time. But I am somewhat in the minority.

good call! I've been listening to floyd for years (david gilmour is easily my greatest guitar influence) but never really made the connection. Division Bell would probably be my favourite floyd album if I had to pick (Obscured by Clouds takes a close second).

Thread crossover: The bass playing on Division Bell and particularly on Pulse is probably my biggest bass-playing influence.

[/loljack]The reason I mentioned it was because there was a quote attributed to David Gilmour where he said he considers Radiohead to be the modern incarnation of Pink Floyd.

Obscured By Clouds? That's a new one.

Gilmour is probably the biggest influence on me guitar wise, because his technique always appears to me to be less about soloing and more about making his guitar sing, making it melodic. Basically making it an instrument, if you understand me. That's the approach I try to take musically.

I love Guy Pratt's bass playing, yeah, but honestly, I think Roger Waters is a highly underrated bassist. Listen to something like 'The Happiest Day Of Our Lives' or even 'Brick (Part Two)' and he does a lot of interesting stuff. Not forgetting he also wrote the music for things like 'Dogs,' which has some pretty badass chordage in it. And the bass riff to 'Money...'
