Discuss.

Probably option 2 for me; some songs are amazing, others make me want to kill people.

If all you can think of for the body of your topic is 'discuss', you probably shouldn't make the topic.

On average I love about half of any given Animal Collective record and the other half is just interminably boring. The biggest culprit of this is Feels.

I've only heard one record. That shitty live improvisational album from about 2001. And it was fucking appalling, literally the worst album I've ever listened to front to back. I was reviewing it, so I had to. I'm not saying they're the worst music I've ever heard, but it's a whole shitty album I had to hear, don't you know.

But yes. I don't know what their usual stuff sounds like, but I couldn't give less of a shit after that abortion/album.

They don't really have "usual stuff" since the membership, recording and writing process vary from album to album.

I put "Average" because "pretty alright" wasn't an option.  My sentiments are a lot like Johnny's.

But presumably they have albums which aren't just 40 minutes of shit improvisation apparently done by two people with only bongos, mics and a keyboard with one key?

I have gotten bored of this band. They're aren't bad but I just never find myself actually wanting to listen to AC anymore.

Yeah, I can't imagine really rockin' out to this band.  Maybe putting it on late at night before one goes to bed, but that's about it.  I'd rather listen to The Dodos, really.

When I saw them live last year I fell asleep.

Multiple times.

Worst show from a non-local band I have ever seen.

I haven't followed them too closely, but I can remember the first time I heard Sung Tongs in the music office of my school's radio station. It sounded revolutionary at that time, and it still is a great album I think. I haven't heard any of their other stuff, beyond a few cursory listens to Feels.

Animal Collective were also involved in probably the worst live show I've ever seen, though not necessarily through a fault of their own. Not long after Sung Tongs came out, I went with a few friends to Wiliamsburg to see them play. We didn't have anyone to stay with in the city, and because the prospect of spending the night in Grand Central wasn't appealling to any of us, we had to be back in time to catch the last Metro North train at 1:20 AM. We figured we would, at the least, be able to catch a good 2/3rds of Animal Collective.

During this particular tour, they were supposed to be playing with Black Dice, but BD cancelled at the last minute. That was fine by me, as I didn't really feel like sitting through another Black Dice set. Unfortunately, the opening band was far worse than Black Dice could ever aspire to be. To call them a "noise band" would be too generous, to describe them, instead, how about a "too-much-money-too-many-friends-no-ideas" band. Those motherfuckers didn't start until 9:45 and played for 45 MINUTES!!!!!!

After them was Gang Gang Dance, who were pretty good, I suppose, but I was starting to get anxious and didn't pay much attention. When Animal Collective came on, we had about 20 minutes before we had to leave, still a decent amount of time. One and a half songs into the set, Panda Bear or one of those fuckers broke a string! It took him almost 10 minutes to change it, all the while chatting with the audience through a stoned haze, saying shit like "I hope this doesn't bum anyone out." We left before he finished the task and barely made the train.

I've heard the same thing about the Mars Volta, but most of what they do onstage when they jam sounds to me like molesting sheep. And I personally think Pink Floyd were a great live band but plenty of other people would think their jams were shit too.

I'm also kind of hit-and-miss on this band. Feels is pretty boring. I listened to Strawberry Jam on loop for several hours while I wrote a children's show for a repertory theatre program, which worked out very nicely, but otherwise I don't really put them on. I dunno.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

I thought Feels was absolutely horrid.  Only track I really like from them is Leaf House off Sung Tongs.  I could totally see how they would be awful live

I really liked Feels but am neutral-to-mildly-annoyed by all their other stuff. Call me a fairweather fan, I guess.

ive got all their albums except for their latest one, Strawberry Jam.  i really like them, theyre music is refreshingly psychedelic in a wierd way. they dont seem to use the standard psychedelic techniques as most other artists.

that said, i do think they have a lot of filler material. they should condense their albums until its all just great songs.

i prefer Panda Bear anyways.

There was a massive dump in the Mediafire thread a couple months ago, and so I went crazy. Turns out that out of those 10, there are two pretty okay albums. It was pretty shit luck that it happens to be these guys that I've gotten most of my Mediafired stuff from, but I also got some Architecture in Helsinki at the same time, so it wasn't a total loss.

It is my aspiration to form a loose-structure project and have our tagline be "We're like Animal Collective except good."

Listening to Banshee Beat as I speak and I love it. I think Feels is pretty damn good, only recently gotten into them, though there are a few tracks I skip (Bees, Flesh Canoe, Daffy Duck). However, Turn Into Something makes me jump around my living room like I did when I was 13 and pulling sickies to get off school. If Feels is hit-and-miss but mostly its, then Strawberry Jam is the reverse. I really like Peacebone, and the first two minutes of Chores are awesome, but I think quite a few ideas don't work.

Still need to check out Sung Tongs etc.
