Vampire Weekend
« on: 01 Jul 2008, 12:36 »

I'm surprised I haven't heard their name mentioned in the topics I've seen so far. They've only got one album out but I really like it. They describe themselves as Upper West Side Soweto, which basically means it's a little bit of Western influence and a little bit of traditional African.

I liked their record when Paul Simon put it out and it was called Graceland.

Zing!

I mean, I like Wes Anderson movies too, but that doesn't mean I want to listen to a band that sounds like one.

I hadn't thought to compare it to Graceland, but I don't compare anything to Graceland. Graceland was the first cassette tape I ever stole from my parents and played until it was warn out. It therefor holds a special place for me beyond comparison to college boys singing about frustrated 18 year old lives to African inspired rhythms.

Still, I like listening to this album. I come home after a long day, drink a beer, listen to vampire weekend. Then I usually remember that there's African music made by people from Africa and put on some Fela Kuti.

I'm just wondering what the hell threads this guy read where no one mentioned Vampire Weekend, and why he didn't bother to do a search and realize that people mentioned is all over the place. Or at least in the "Top albums of 2008" thread.

I read the first few posts in that thread but I didn't see anything and I gotta say the 50 post per page thing really makes reading a pain.

Also, I just did a quick search and it wasn't mentioned on the first or last page of that topic, and that's up to 100 posts that I don't want to take the time to search through.

Yeah, ok, in case it wasn't clear, I do like this album too. It's catchy and it's fun. I'm even looking forward to seeing a show by these guys in a couple of weeks

I do also like making fun of it, though. It's so very much a product of private-school-intellectualism, and being a graduate of a private college with a huge self-deprecating streak, I can't help but make fun of that.

It kind of sucks to be this band because they got so much hype before they even dropped their album that people were already disliking them. That said, some of their songs are pretty good, catchy. the album as a whole is pretty solid but to me at least, it doesn't have any staying power. i listened to it like maybe 5 times before i got tired of it.

You are obviously doing it wrong.

You see that little search bar near the top of the page? All you had to do was click on the topic you wanted, type "Vampire Weekend" into the search bar, and viola!, you would see all the posts about vampire weekend. You could also just search the entire music forum for vampire weekend. The search bar is your friend. Please do it right from now on.

Plus, Vampire Weekend is rather bland and medicore. They really do not deserve their own thread. Sorry!

I highly disagree with bland. Simple is a much better term. So it's not Giant Steps (probably the hardest piece of music to keep up with, since I'm guessing we don't have many Trane fans here) but I rather like the simpleness of it. I wouldn't use it during a work out, but it's nice relaxing music, which is just what I look for sometimes.

I haven't gotten their actual release, but I had the Blue CD-R which is basically the exact same album but with one less song last year, and I kind of played it out. It's not a bad record by any means, but it doesn't have much staying power for me. Plus, as far as I can tell it's basically just 3rd Wave Ska updated for the hipster set.

Lester Young was awesome for a whole bunch of things on in his own.

Lester Young also mentored Charlie Parker, and if this had been his only contribution to Jazz, it would still make him awesome.

In conclusion, we should all feel ashamed that we don't own more Lester Young recordings, even if we already own a bunch, and we should seek to rectify this at the earliest opportunity.

Brownie was awesome and amazing and wonderful and all, but if you're being objective then in terms of influence, originality, and significance then he really can't be compared to Lester Young at all.

Also because he played trumpet, and Pres played tenor saxophone.

But I love Clifford Brown. Question: which was the better version of the Clifford Brown/Max Roach quintet? Personally I think it was the original line-up with Harold Land on tenor. While there's no disputing that Sonny Rollins was the better (and probably the more interesting) saxophonist, the contrast between Land's and Brown's styles made for a really delicious and tingly musical feeling. That magic's not quite there in the Rollins recordings.

I will probably come across as what in the new English is called a 'n00b' as far as jazz, but I do have A Love Supreme and it's simply beautiful. It's so... I don't know, pure. It's complex, but it's just a pure piece of work from start to finish, so honest, too, I don't know what it is about it.

Anyway, the point is, I like some jazz, but I still love Tony Wilson's 'jazz is the last refuge of the untalented.'

I like a good bit of jazz myself, Ornette Coleman, Joshua Redman, Charlie Parker, Dizzie Gillespie, The Bad Plus, etc.  However, I've never found myself drawn in by Coletrane's work for some reason.  Am I the only one?  I have nothing by respect and awe for his work ethic and what he's done for music, but it just doesn't reach me emotionally.  I think I may be dead inside.
