metal gear solid 4
« on: 05 Jul 2008, 15:56 »

didn't find a thread for a few pages...

anyone played this yet? what do you think about it?  so far, I'm loving it except for the targeting system - he's too slow moving around and aiming. but i love the drebin system and the fact you can customize your weapons. The Mk II is awesome.

I think we tore MGS4 to pieces in the Zero Punctuation thread.

I think MGS4 tells the best story in the best way in video gaming history. They pulled out all the stops with the single player. The multiplayer? I wish that you could take a few more bullets, a la Halo 3. Maybe not THAT many bullets, but still, I don't enjoy that fact that if someone gets a shot on you first there is no way you can fight back. Something reminiscent of shields in the Halo games would be nice too. But the single player was absolutely amazing, nothing can touch it.

As soon as I heard about the disgusting length of cut scenes, I had flashbacks to Xenosaga and remembered I never really liked Metal Gear Solid to begin with.

My friend is actually contemplating buying a PS2 on eBay for cheap to play MGS3, and 2, and 1.

I take it you've never played Silent Hill 2.

You take correctly. What console is it on (or PC)? What's it about?

I've played SH2. Amazing story.

MGS4--actually any MGS game--still blows it out of the water. Guns of the Patriots is probably the best game I've ever played and see myself playing for quite some time.

3 was good, mostly because it was a throwback to Bond and the like and was much, much lighter on sap than any of the other games, ie, Otacon didn't cry about a woman in his life dying.

Guns of the Patriots comparitively sits below 3 and 1, but above 2. It's more occupied with tying up loose ends and explaining away wackiness than being terribly coherent, but then, I don't think Kojima ever planned on this scale until after 2. The "big twist" at the end felt completely unearned and out of left field. But it did pretty well, all things considered.

Is it the most epic game story ever made? Maybe. Is it the most ambitious game story ever made? Probably. Is it the best? Probably not. Game stories suck by and large. Game writers will be the first to point this out to you. MGS is no exception. Were it a novel, it'd be an airport thriller. Were it a movie, it would be a Paul WS Anderson film, albeit a wackier one.

I compare the story of MGS to more like an anime series than a film or a novel, personally.

Yeah, MGS is like an anime. One of those terrible ones where it always seems like it should be getting good and finally making sense already, but it just fucking refuses to. Also, to get to the anime, first you're forced to play a mediocre video game.

Yeah, that's a pretty accurate comparison.

One thing I didn't like about MGS4 was that they took what amounted to a running gag from the first three games (Johnny whatshisface, the jail guard with irritable bowels) and made him an incredibly attractive badass, and his constant pants-shitting is explained away (apparently shitting your pants for a reason other than fear isn't unattractive, and a heretofore sensible female character falls in love with Johnny upon learning the reason for the pants-shitting)

I thought that was odd. That was the most odd-seeming thing about the story other than Otacon; his behavior wasn't real to me. He just seemed too much like the typical emotionless character for that kind of role, like Q in James Bond. Hell, even Sunny seemed like a "better" character, and she's only in, what, 5 or 6 scenes? To contrast that, I thought that Naomi was pretty well done.
The scene at the end, when Snake is in the microwave chamber and everyone is about to die, was my favorite, albeit very cliche how Snake saves them in the nick of time.
I haven't played any of the other MGS games but I imagine they are good as well. What looks awesome, is Alan Wake. Maybe not as good as MGS4, from what I hear, but it seems really cool, from what I've heard in previews. Too bad it doesn't have a release date.

MGS is a series, along with Splinter Cell and GTA, that I have an interesting relationship with.  When I'm playing the games I'm in love with them, I think they're great and I play them quite a lot, they really suck up my time.  As soon as I haven't played them for a day or two I start to resent them, I start realizing how hard they are and how frustrated I get playing them.  I might end up playing MGS4 as soon as I find someone who actually owns a PS3.

Haha.  Exactly.

Vice City, San Andreas and GTA4 don't exactly have the best stories but dear Jesus do I love the writing and voice acting.  I do missions for the cutscenes half the time.

I kind of agree it plays like an anime, but overall it's a really well put together game. not as good as a movie might be but overall the entire series is A+

I hate the MG series. I've tried playing them, and I've tried liking them, I really have, but I haven't been able to gut one through to the bitter end since MGS1. The series really is like a bad comic or anime, and shares many of the same crippling shortcomings. It has overwrought dialogue, some really ridiculous characters and the few fresh ideas that are carted out with each iteration are quickly crushed under the sheer weight of series continuity. Raiden's a prime example; not only was he widely reviled due to his effeminacy but he also had to fight an uphill battle from the word go thanks to all the fanboys frothing at the mouth to play as Snake. So what do the devs do? They spend nearly as much time making "Well, I guess he was pretty gay, amirite guys?!?" jokes in subsequent games as they do developing a character that frankly, had already served his purpose and wasn't really necessary for the remainder of the series-- in an ideal world, I think he would have been dropped entirely. I suppose the cheap thrill of a familiar reference suits the VH1 fans, but I couldn't help but think that in this case metahumor was taking up time better spent on something new or at least engaging.

Anyway, I honestly think Kojima is capable of doing much, much better since there's some wonderful presentation and setpieces buried in the MGS series. Maybe now that he won't have to staple his ideas onto the same lumbering 20 year old behemoth he'll be able to really shine. I'm probably being too optimistic though, considering the fact that big name franchises are clearly where the big money lies.

P.S. You know what else is fucking sad/funny? I'm pretty damn sure I spent less time writing and editing this post than it takes to get through your average MG cutscene. And that's including the time spent making a sammich, losing the post to a browser timeout and losing an edit when answering the phone.

I enjoyed Metal Gear.  It was a solid NES game and was blissfully free of vampires, psychic ninjas and what the fuck ever else Kojima started seeing after Miyamoto turned him on to 'shrooms.

MGS1 I also remember being pretty enjoyable, since it was still mostly a game.

MGS2 was okay at first, sneaking around the boat and then taking the pictures of Metal Gear or whatever, then it just cartwheeled whooping and screaming into Bizarro World and the gameplay stopped being particularly interesting too, so whatever.

I watched a friend play a little bit of MGS3 and decided I had no interest in stupid shit like shooting snakes and wandering around bland environments.  Though the intro theme song was admittedly fucking hilarious.

Your loss. 3 is the best of the 4.

Also, the "psychic ninjas" are from the first game. Or rather, there's a cyborg ninja and a psychic boss. Kojima really, really likes to revisit different incarnations of the same character throughout the MGS series, though, so there are 3 cyborg ninjas and 2 psychic bosses. Go figure.

I know there was a psychic ninja cyborg whatever in MGS1.  I only said that the ORIGINAL Metal Gear game didn't have any of that batshit crazy stuff.  At least, I don't remember it having any of that.
