I'm drinking Laphroaig and listening to Aideen O'Brien.  Good scotch and good Celtic music.

Some boards manage to make this a perfectly civilised long-running topic.  So:

That first picture is totally great. I would see a band who's frontman looked like that regardless of who they actually were.

I think I'll put on Abattoir Blues when this album finishes. This album is It's a Bit Complicated by Art Brut. Basically that album is excellent.

Heavy Rotation - Run For Your Life (Diamond Cut Instrumental)

Apparently the original has vocals. I don't think I want to hear that 'cause this has to be superior in every way.

I am listening to 'Alas I Cannot Swim' By Laura Marling, a British folk-y singer. The folder I downloaded had two songs from her 'My Manic and Me' EP, so they are being played also.

Her voice is so pretty! I have heard a few of her songs on the radio, so I figured I would listen to the rest of the album, and it's the kind of music that I can put on as background music and hum along aimlessly for a while, then all of a sudden her voice gets to me and I have to just stop and listen properly. Sarah Blasko is like that also (her voice is rather pretty as well, I might add).

Guys, Hannah is doing this topic right. It's more worthwhile and fun if you actually talk about what you are listening to. This can actually be a good thread if you do it correctly people.

I personally am listening to the song Days by Escape the Day. Its a slow tune, in the vein of low. A minor key piano line drifts along as soft vocals wander above it. Guitar parts meander along. Its very intimate and personal. Its an excellent track, and I recommend it to anyone who needs to mope about.

I have the biggest crush on Laura Marling's voice right now. I really enjoyed both her album, her lp and the random other tracks of her's that I've stumbled across on the internet. I think that my favourite pop song all year is going to be that track by the Mystery Jets featuring her, Young Love.

Right now I am listening to Hot Chip's The Warning. It's a much prettier album than I remember. I kinda forgot about it for a long time around Made in the Dark coming out and being pretty great. I'm listening to The Warning rather than Made in the Dark because I've just had the lines "Hot Chip will break your legs, snap off your head. Hot Chip will put you down, under the ground" stuck in my head all evening. I'm glad I'm listening to this one instead because it's nice to have things be better than you remember.

For like the past three days all I've been doing is going to work, sleeping, and listening to Om. Currently it's "Annapurna" off of Variations of a Theme. If you've never heard Om it's basically highly repetitive, chanted, droning, stoner metal minus the guitar. It was formed originally by the rhythm section of Sleep, if that helps anybody imagining the music.

And it's fucking sweet.

The Combination - Greenleaf

The whole cd (Secret Alphabets) basically sounds like Dozer, though a more retro-inspired Dozer. Not so strange though since the same guy is (was? the latest Greenleaf CD doesn't sound like Fredrik in Dozer) the singer in Dozer.

So brilliant. I have yet to really fully understand what Michael Gira meant with this though, because he's not a cocky guy at all. Perhaps he just means that all others are self-indulgent people.

I'm listening to Shearwater's Rook. It's the best thing I've heard in... maybe ever. Plus, I got to hear the bonus track the other day thanks to a friend who bought it on vinyl, and it has Meiburg's falsetto paired with a very sufjan-like banjo. Great stuff, highly recommended to just about anyone. It hooked me, and this isn't my kind of music, usually.

Just starting to listen to the album Unomia, predecessor to the fabulous Eingya by Helios. I caught "Velius" on Last.fm and loved it. Right now I'm listening to "Clementine." Sounding more ambient than Eingya. Still gorgeous, though.

Wait...these songs are in alphabetical order. Hmph. OK, we're good.

Ok, moving on from Laura Marling for the moment and going to the Justice Remix of MGMT's 'Electric Feel'. Happy Dance-y Remix-y Music-y goodness!

I heard this on the radio and was given a youtube link. The more I listen to it, the more I am liking it. The last minute or so sounds like a different song (I have been told that it seems like a bit of a lazy remix) but I still am having it on repeat, probably to my housemates' annoyance.

I've been listening to the following records:

  • The Sonics - Boom! Maybe not as perfect as the first LP, but still just as essential for describing the 60s northwest garage sound)
  • V/A - Killed by Death Vol 1 The first in the bootleg series of great, rare punk.  Standout tracks are the Child Molesters doing "I'm the Hillside Strangler", Authorities doing "I Hate Cops" and the completely un-PC "Decadent Jew" by the Nuns. Most of it is pretty great. Even better, no crap Epitaph sounding stuff
  • The Kids - The Kids Belgian's first punk band [along other greats like Raxola and Hubble Bubble - the latter of which featured Plastic Bertrand on drums before he went solo] ripping their way thru a dozen tracks plus two bonus cuts. Worth it for "This is Rock'n' Roll" and "Do you love the nazis" alone, but all tracks are pretty great.
  • King Khan and the Shrines - The Supreme Genius of... So I know people are probably gonna be all over this band soon because of this being released on Vice (hey, it happened to the Black Lips) and their recent Pitchfork Fest appearance (and the afterparty performance on Saturday night was a billion times better than their Sunday afternoon show, of course). It's still a great band and a great compilation for those curious about this weird melding of garage, soul and greasy r&b. My only complaint is that 2xlp sets should always be gatefolds.
  • Nobunny - Love Visions. If you ever said you wanted to hear a man in a bunny mask, needlessly tight briefs, and not much else sing unbelievably catchy pop songs about lost love, found love, and of course prostitution, this here's the record for you. Recorded in glorious lo-fii! Definitely not an album for everyone, but for those that are into this sorta thing, it's a fun summer platter.

I think I got a little wordy.

Additionally, I've been listening to the Netherfriends' EP. Fantastic songs featuring pots and pans as percussion. Plus, the singer looks just like Charlie from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
