So, I am a newly inducted design student and my first assignment is a band logo and gig ticket design. The band name had to be no more than FOUR letters long and the logo had to be a logotype (i.e. just the band name, maybe a small symbol). The problem I have is that I have two logo designs, but I need more of an idea of what type of music genre it seems to portray. This is where you guys come in - what type of band do you think Atra are and which logo do you like best?

I think the first one's better. The second one's more unusual, which might be good, but it's also harder to make out: it could just as easily be read as "dfvd" as "atra".

Be warned, though, that if you use the first logo it's highly likely you've got a pop-punk band on your hands.

I agree with Harry on the aesthetic comments, although in my eyes you've got an old-school hip-hop group logo there.

Man, that's true. I didn't consider the possibility that she was designing a logo for a band from the 1980s.

Yeah, I saw hip hop in the first too, metal in the second.

I didn't consider old-school hip hop, interesting. The gig ticket has to be done in black and white, so whatever colours I pick for the logo have to be easily transferable to grayscale. I've got a couple more ideas, so I guess I'll throw them up here when I've finished them. I can handle pop-punk I guess, it's not like I have to actually make the band's music as well! Thanks guys.

The first one makes me think of an electro/dance band kind of like Justice or something.  The second makes me think of like, a traditional Indian + progressive crossover for some reason.

Both logos are pretty cool but the first one works better since, as has been said, the second one could be taken to be a whole other word which isn't great for a logo though it is a bit more unique which is good for a logo.

All in all though Id go with the first option.

how did you come up with the name "Atra"? It's neat!

I dig the second one, it's more unique.. a suggestion to solve the problem others have mentioned would be to make the first "a" a capital, but in the same style. You could always pull a Metallica and make the first and last letters huge, eg. AtrA

how did you come up with the name "Atra"? It's neat!

Atra is a latin word that tranlates to 'dark', 'black' or 'gloomy'. It's the name of my black iPod.

King Dan, I actually have a logo to do up which is kind of like what you've typed out there, with the 'A' on each end huge and the 'T' and 'R' smaller. I'll post it up once I have a digital copy.

Also, I like that font ThisIsOriginal, easy to do with my own handwriting.
