Don Caballero
« on: 25 Jul 2008, 04:34 »

Okay so first post here, even though I've been a member for a while.  Anyways, new Don Caballero out soon.  With a pretty lame title ("Punkgasm" although you'll already have known this) and only a three piece set (Ellsworth is out, although you'll already have known this too), should Damon just call it quits?  Even if his drumming propelled the original crew, ever since Don's revival it hasn't been the same.  So, opinions?

Personally I think so, too many bands are being fueled by one original member, and the sound almost always changes for the worse.  World Class Listening Problem sounded like a Don Caballero cover band, and no one wants that to happen again.

If this is a terrible idea for a introductory post, I don't care. Hit the backspace.

The first couple of albums by this band are exceptional! My personal favorite is What Burns..., but Don Cab II is pretty ace as well. But I'd agree that the post-revival material is... not necessarily bad. Boring. Lame. Something seems like it is missing. Maybe Che should just do that thing where he goes batshit crazy (this man is insane) and chase all the other band members out. Because I think I would still see a show where it was just Damon Che on stage wailing on some drums.

Punkgasm is a terrible album title.

Damon Che is a crazy motherfucker.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

The only good thing to come out of the karaoke version is those t-shirts that look like the old Run DMC t-shirts.

Don Cab or Battles?

This is important.

Why you gotta make me choose.

Right now I would have to lean on Don Cab because, man, their first three albums are pretty much perfect as far as I am concerned.

I think Battles have the potential to be as good, maybe even better, if the level of development between their EPs and Mirrored is indicative of how much better they will get with each album.

Last year, when Battles were touring, they were playing a show here in Kansas City on the night that Harry Potter opened in theatres. A friend of mine and myself were really divided as to what we should do--musically wig out at battles, or join every single teenager on the planet. We ended up choosing Potter and his merry bunch. Worst decision ever! I mean, I am not super keen on Battles, but it would have been a fun live show, to say the least.

I like Battles' vocals. They don't look at them so much as vocals but merely as a separate instrument, which is probably why they are so unconventional.

I love all of Don Cab's stuff with Ian Williams. His other band, Storm & Stress, is also a big favorite (I put a link to them in the mediaf!re thread).

Not to mention his cameo in High Fidelity :P

Same here, I don't listen to it that much, but it is very good relaxing music.
