I should explain. The gravel on the beach was newly shipped from a quarry. Gravel quarries do a lot of their mining by detonating powerful shaped charges to loosen the rock. The charges found were undetonated, nearly intact, as opposed to the spent casings. Bomb squads were called; much fun was had.

To be fair though, the explosives were probably ANFO mixes or else PETN/RDX-based charges, all these things are very unlikely to pose any significant threat of unplanned detonation.

I live in Crested Butte, CO, which is known as the Wildflower Capital of Colorado. I'm too damn lazy to find wildflower pictures, though, so I'll focus on something else.

We get some snow in the winter:

That building is where I live. It's an art gallery with an apartment on the second story. And that's my dog.

And bears in the summer: Youtube link because I'm too damn lazy to find actual pictures at the moment.

We also have mountain passes.
Link.

Many of which you wouldn't want to drive through.
Link.
Link.

And no fast food chains because we're a historical district. We also have festivals and free concerts and hippies a dragon and shit. Here's the pictures I can find easily:

Huge pic.
Huge dragon pic.
Link.

Oh, and there's a ski area with the most lift-accessible extreme terrain in the northern hemisphere.
We also have a population of around 1500 and 30 or so restaurants/bars, many of which are a block or less away from my house.

I linked most of those pics because this post turned out to be a lot longer than I expected and there's really a lot of different sides to Crested Butte. It's pretty awesome if you don't mind driving 30 miles to get most of your essentials.
And snow. You kinda have to like snow.

Note: Some of these pictures I took, and some I didn't.

That is the coolest building ever. I think that if you stocked up well enough, you would be totally fine in the event of a zombie apocalypse.

And hell, if need be, we could go fishing out our bedroom window!  Perfect situation.  I'll have to mention that to the guys who own the lighthouse.

Yeah, I definitely got spoiled, growing up there. We also have a rubber ducky race in the summer. Since google images has no pictures of it (Hillary Clinton on the second page wtf) I'll edit this post when I get the pics I took uploaded, since it's quite a sight. Which will probably be tomorrow.

ok so i grew up in Cairns, Australia which is pretty much a tourist town based on it's proximity to the reef and rainforest... here is an aerial shot of the CBD in which i could actually point out both the hosue i grew up in, the apartment i moved into when i got older AND the place i used to work

here is my fave beach

here is my fave spot to sit and think called mossman gorge, it is about an hours drive away from where i live

However at the start of the year I moved to Brisbane to finish my university degree and because I got offered a better job... here is Brisbane

here is my favourite spot in Brisbane... I love the architecture of that building which just so happens to be our city library! nothing better than checking out a book then chilling out in the square reading it!

Also yes Cairns is beautiful and i do often miss it but the opportunities are so much better in brisbane, not to mention other cultural perks like the museum, theatre and international acts!

I live in Brighton, on the south coast of England. *SNIPPITY SNIP SNIP*

I live in Worthing and work in Brighton (annnd go to college in Chichester. I'm all over the shop in Sussex).

Worthing is a fine place if you're an old person, but lacks stuff to do when you're, y'know, not... old...

For instance, see our fine clock!

ISN'T IT FINE?

And then we have our own pier, which... really doesn't rival either of Brighton's.

It has an arcade though!

WITH TIME CRISIS 2! (At least it did the last time I checked)

And, to top it all off, we have a windmill.

Now everyone can tell me how awesome the place I live is.

I really have a yen
To go back once again,
Back to the place where no one wears a frown,
To see once more those super-special just plain folks
In my home town.

No fellow could ignore
The little girl next door,
She sure looked sweet in her first evening gown.
Now there’s a charge for what she used to give for free
In my home town.

I remember dan, the druggist on the corner, ’e
Was never mean or ornery,
He was swell.
He killed his mother-in-law and ground her up real well,
And sprinkled just a bit
Over each banana split.

The guy that taught us math,
Who never took a bath,
Acquired a certain measure of renown,
And after school he sold the most amazing pictures
In my home town.

That fellow was no fool
Who taught our sunday school,
And neither was our kindly parson brown.
We’re recording tonight so I have to leave this line out.
In my home town.

I remember sam, he was the village idiot.
And though it seems a pity, it
Was so.
He loved to burn down houses just to watch the glow,
And nothing could be done,
Because he was the mayor’s son.

The guy that took a knife
And monogrammed his wife,
Then dropped her in the pond and watched her drown.
Oh, yes indeed, the people there are just plain folks
In my home town.

...ahem.

My hometown is Newport, Isle of Wight, though I grew up in the considerably smaller village of Rookley. The only pictures I can find online of Rookley are of the country park and holiday resort complex near it:

Here are some pictures of Newport! This is the quay:

Here is the old guildhall, now a museum. The towns best kebab shop is just down that street to the right.

Here is St. James's Square:

Here is my local pub, which my mum also owns.

That's all I got!

I grew up in Mundelein, IL. Nothing really seems to happen there, except for maybe a lot of snow and drug busts at local fast food joints. But there are some really beautiful areas.

This is a gazebo at the Mundelein Seminary. Its the largest seminary in the United States, and it is freaking gorgeous.

Here's a bridge at the seminary. I really love the architecture. The whole place is ridiculous.

There was a lot of snow last winter. A whole lot. Here's some branches.

Ah, the Northern Lights. I love this picture.

The best part of Mundelein hands down has to be Taco and Burrito Express.  Theres nothing express about the place. It takes like 25 minutes just for them to realize youre there. But its totally worth the wait.

I live in Houston. It is an incredibly ugly industrial city. I actually live an hour or so north, in the still ugly, but more trashy area called Montgomery. The air here is filthy and it rains way too often. I have no photos, but just imagine a very grimy in-fill sort of area on a polluted lake.

My home town is Harpenden, which is 25 mins train ride out of central London.

This is part of my High Street.

We have a sign.

We also have a  train station.

We have a Pipe Band, too. I am in this band. My Mum and my biological sister are too. Both my mother and my sister are in this photo. Points to whoever points them out.

I live in Cambridgeshire. It mostly looks like this:

They're building a guided busway, which is a lot like a railway line, except for buses. It looks like this:

And just around the corner from my house are some ponies.

OMG PONIES

That's about as exciting as it gets around here.

I live in a lovely, boring town called Mississauga (apparently, Canada's 5th largest city)! There are a lot of people, and some cute neighbourhoods, and I find it pretty safe...mind you, the execution-style shooting outside our local mall shook my confidence a little. And parks! We have a ton of parks. Sometimes, they are used for shooting no-budget zombie movies!

This is our City Hall. Apparently, sometimes we have events that feature bouncy castles! In the upper right hand corner, you can see the west part of Square One, an excessively large mall! I do mean excessively.

http://www.pbase.com/gwilburn/port_credit&page=13
Photos of Port Credit, a nice little strip of shops and restaurants on the Waterfront.

Streetsville is nice too.

That's about all we have. Luckily, we're only half an hour from downtown Toronto, and there's always something to do there!

I am from a small town of 700 in SE North Dakota. It was okay. There is a reason for ND has a very long tradition of having the highest percentage of underage drinkers and binge drinkers. My town also used to have the highest percentage of drug arrests in the nation! It was not uncommon to drive 30 miles going 25mph on gravel or dirt roads. I'd post pictures, but GIS has none.

Chicago is pretty! I could probably handle living there, it looks like a tall version of DC - as opposed to NYC, which I found to be just tall.

Anyway, I now live in Gaithersburg, Maryland. It's okay. Apparently there are almost 60,000 people here, but the boundaries are kinda fuzzy, because it's right between the 2 other "big" "cities" in the county with no readily apparent borders. It has an "Olde Towne" area, a bunch of boring shopping centers, one mall, and a bunch of suburban sprawl. It's also the home of NIST and the county fairgrounds.
The historic train station in Olde Towne that the Marc trains still use.

These are two different huge shopping areas that got built up in the last couple years. They tried to make them be like cute little cities, but they're surrounded by parking lots and big box stores so people will actually come to them.

And this is our apartment building, which is not too exciting but pretty typical of the architecture.

Eh, I googled images, because I am too lazy to go take pictures. Unfortunately, nothing good came up showing what Detroit really looks like. Pretty much like 80% of the city is abandoned buildings, or run down. The other 20% is like downtown.

Sadly, Rockville is not that awesome. I wrote a post about it in the first page of the thread that hopefully can be found here. Its really not that exciting other than its really close to DC. Also, I had no idea there were LARPers in Rockville. Thats actually kind of hilarious.

Yeah, there's quite a bit of the gamers stuff around these parts isn't there? I know Sid Meier is in Hunt Valley or that area isn't he?

Also, LARPers around Rockville? you mean like AMTguard or World of Darkness? Because, if there's WoD LARPers, maybe there's just basic RPers too, and then I could find people to be a nerd around.

Yeah, Bethesda Softworks is in (gasp) Bethesda, which is the next area south of Rockville, but it's not that great either. Lots of disgustingly large and expensive houses, but some pretty good restaurants and a good theatre company (Roundhouse). Basically nothing in Montgomery County is that great.. It's approximately 25% each: obscenely large houses (Potomac/Bethesda), suburban sprawl (Germantown/Gaithersburg/Rockville/Silver Spring), places where you shouldn't go alone at night (Wheaton), and cornfields (Poolesville/Damascus). However we have a good school system, despite the rampant drugs, and there is Metro access to DC, and it's still better than Prince George's County.

Yeah, Firaxis, Big Huge, Day One (a sort of side studio), Breakaway (serious games), Zenimax Online (the oblivion MMO).  I actually work as a software tester for a company up here that other software companies outsource their testing to.  I haven't done any of their stuff, though.  Not allowed to talk about the clients we get anyway.

Brownsville, PA. According to Wikipedia:

Brownsville is the ultimate depiction of how the decline of industry and the rise of suburbanization has destroyed the small American downtown. Once thriving, nearly all of Brownsville's many downtown buildings are vacant. Gone are the many mom and pop stores and restaurants of old, excepting Fiddle's Confectionery, which has been in continuous successful operation since the turn of the century. The only notable employer still located within the borough was the Brownsville General Hospital, which recently closed.

Here is the downtown!

Obviously, I do not live there any more. Now I live in Pittsburgh, which I basically enjoy and is a nice place to live. A lot fewer closed store fronts, too.

This is the crappy little town I was born in:

This is even the end of town (downtown, for what it's worth) that I'm from.    We have a bridge or two here as well, see?

Three things about the bridge picture:  1) I'm pretty sure they put that park there after a tornado wiped out downtown.  2) The grass is only green like that about two weeks a year.  The rest of the year, it's brown as hell.  3) The other side of that bridge is another state.

Like many people, I escaped there, and have since lived much more exciting places such as:

For most of my life I have lived in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. It is halfway between Milwaukee (Brewers baseball and Pabst Blue Ribbon fame) and Green Bay (as in Packers football). The single tallest building is 7 stories (and nothing else comes close).

This is my house in winter after a plow drives down the street:

Also, we are on Lake Michigan!

Pretty tree:

Things Sheboygan is almost-famous for:
~Brat Days- The Johnsonville Brat(wurst) Company is located near Sheboygan. As such, we are the brat(wurst) capital of the country. This is used as an excuse to have a parade and get really really drunk every summer. (That is 'brat' as in 'brahhhht,' not 'brat' like an annoying child.)

~The Dairyland Surf Classic- No, I am not joking. Fresh water surfing happens. And apparently Sheboygan is one of the best places in the United States to freshwater surf?

~Kohler Co. They make things like toilets and sinks. I guess people like their products?

~Golf courses. The Kohler family (see above) actually imported sheep from Scotland for one of them or something.

~The Chordettes. 1950s female singing group- ever heard the songs "Mr. Sandman" or "Lollipop" ("Lollipop, lollipop, oh lolli lolli lolli...")?

It is no wonder I ran away to school in New York.

I will now disappear again.

Thanks for rezzing! I should take another walk downtown, if nothing else just to make people suffer through ten feet of photos every time they want to post.

Ok, I feel bad posting a bunch of photos at the beginning of the page (contrary to my last post) but I went to the 31st street beach today and took some pictures. My camera died really quickly, and some of the pictures weren't very good, so of course I'm only going to put up the couple of good ones.
And again, I'm sorry for the size. Photobucket's really slow and the idea of resizing each picture makes my heart bleed a brownish-red sadness.

Tomorrow I should be going somewhere downtown (right now I'm thinking maybe Marina City area) so hopefully I'll come back with some better pictures.
