Behind the times

So yeah, just recently got into The Mountain Goats with their new release "Heretic Pride".  I am loving the hell out of it, and I was curious to see if anyone could recommend me something similar to it.  Similar in a sense of minimalistic instrumentation, great lyrics, unique sound; that's what I'm looking for.

Bands I'm already aware of that do this:
Les Poisson Rouges
The Decemberists
Iron and Wine
Owls

Also, I'm considering buying the new Portishead album, can anyone tell me what the band is like because it will be my first venture into their music.  Thanks.

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy fits your criteria pretty spot on. I would recommend you start with his latest offering Lie Down in the Light.

I prefer their first album "Dummy" but "Third" is a great album too.

You might like Bon Iver and Mount Eerie. They're a little more lo-fi than The Mountain Goats' latest offering, but still pretty similar. I'll second the recommendation of Lie Down In The Light, too.

I'll take each of those into consideration, but after hearing some of "Dummy", I'm not going to get any Portishead.  It's not my taste.  I found Bright Eyes on Pandora though, and they sound pretty good.

Wow Anyways, that was probably the funniest analogy I've read in a long time. 

Perhaps I will give it some time.  Music is funny in that way.  One day it can never interest you, and the next you'll listen to it for hours without stopping.  It's half the fun, I believe.

Why not just keep buying more Mountain Goats records? There's about a million of them and they're all pretty solid. That's what I did when I got into the Mountain Goats.

If you check out Mount Erie and like it, I would recommend going back to the dude's previous band, the Microphones. Weird, but good shit.

also, early of Montreal (Gay Parade, or my favorite, Coquelicot Asleep in the Poppies), Peter and the Wolf (oh, God, it's orgasmic), Smog, and the Dodos.
