Best PC Games (pre-XP)
« on: 01 Aug 2008, 16:48 »

I'm looking for a few old games to play on my Macbook (emulated hopefully).  Freeware is a plus!

The (pre-XP) is just to signify that the games are supposed to be older.  DOS, Win95, maybe early XP.

So far I have Bards Tale, 7th Guest, and Conquest of the New World!  Throw our your favorite!

uh... The best games you can buy, or you can torrent OSX ISOs if you're really desperate. If you don't already have Blizzard games you should snag a few.

I'm not really limited by operating system (or money).  I'm limited by my graphics card.  That's not really the reason for the thread, though.  I've played most newer games, and most of them have lost the fun gamplay somewhere between the graphics and their massive advertising campaigns.

When I was younger I had a favorit game from the win 95-era. Lords of the Realm II. The III wasent nearly as good. It's a real time strategy, administritiv, turn based game.

When I was four my dad brought home a computer gaming system which played games through cassette tapes. I have no idea what it was, I only remember thinking it was the shit because it had a Ghost Busters game.

So probably that?

Wizardry: Bane of the Cosmic Forge and Crusader's of the Dark Savant.  The former is the first computer RPG I beat without any outside assistance at all (yes, I broke down and bought the strategy guide for Wasteland, hey, I was like 13 ok).

Also, oh man, The Magic Candle.  That was an insanely deep, vast yet still fun RPG.

Any of the classic Lucasarts adventures

LOOM
Monkey Island 1-3
Sam and Max Hit The Road
Full Throttle
The Dig
Maniac Mansion
Zak Mcracken and The Alien Mindbenders

And other genres...

There's Also Warcraft 1 & 2 as well as Starcraft
Duke Nukem

I second Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, plus Icewind Dale 1 & 2 if you like that type of gameplay.

And, others, I'll leave it at there however.

Icewind Dale (with the expansion installed) is the most fun dungeon romp ever made.  Period.

The sequel was good too, but was a little too hard in unfair ways (hook horrors bluh) and I honestly thought the Third Edition rules didn't work very well in it.

Ultimate Doom with an emulator for mouse look?

Quake 1?

Star wars: X-wing series?

Max Payne? It has a mac OS version, and the graphics are poor enough that you should be able to run it without difficulty if you can run say... the Quake 3 engine. And that game is just so much fun, it is like an art, seeing how many kills you can get in one dive between cover.

The first Max Payne is the only "shoot things until they die" game I have tremendously enjoyed (unless you count Deus Ex).  Great story and really fun gameplay/level design.

Yeah, there are some things I liked about the second game (regenerating bullet time, better accuracy, more weapons), but I missed how easy it was to die in the first one, and I liked how in the first one, the mooks couldn't aim for crap, felt more cinematic that way. I am still hoping for a third one, seems like Take Two would have wanted to be making a new one, what with the movie coming out, but I guess not.

The pair of grenade launching goons in the beginning of the final setting really pissed me off, though, until I could get it right.

Diablo 2 wasn't that good?  Explain that to the legions of people who STILL PLAY IT, and to Blizzard who STILL UPDATE IT and STILL SELL IT IN STORES.

That's like saying Starcraft was "okay".

Man, I try. I think they're autistic or something, though.

Also, something selling well has never been a really good argument for quality ever. That kind of logic tells me Epic Movie was better than Lars and the Real Girl. Clearly, anyone who holds this opinion has a deep flaw in their character.

You're an elitist.

If a lot of people like something, it must have some value to them, and it's ridiculous to tell people you have better taste than them.

This is not the same as saying that Britney Spears is "better" than GY!BE because she's sold more records.  It's just saying that clearly Britney Spears is good, on some level, to a lot of people, and thus there must be something she is doing right.

Age of Empires II.

Fuck, yeah.

Did we do any of the Transport Tycoons yet? Also, anything by Chris Sawyer - not technically Pre-XP for some of it, but I suspect that things like Rollercoaster Tycoon (1 and 2) and Locomotion would probably work on older machines reasonably happily.

Slavery and fascism aren't art forms, so you're shooting yourself in the apple with an orange by trotting those out.

Nickelback may not be good to you or I, but to a lot of people they are.  I have no right to tell people who honestly enjoy them that what they are enjoying is, by some invisible empiric law, "shit".

You're an elitist too.

That does not mean they have shit taste.

It just means they like something I don't.

I'm not wound up in the slightest.  Just being precise.

edit: It's one thing to say "I don't like Diablo 2."  It's quite another to say that a game with such lasting appeal to so many people is "not good" because it is provably good to a large number of people.

No matter what you like, a lot of people will think it's shit.  No matter what you think is shit, some number (possibly a lot) of people will like it.  This is why art is different from science.

These people are wrong, just like the people who think Diablo 2 is "not all that good".

How can I be wrong about something that is entirely subjective?  Some people just don't click with some games/movies/music/books/art/whathaveyou, they're not automatically wrong for not liking it.  If someone is playing Nickelback at a party, you don't say "you're wrong/have a shitty taste in music/were dropped on your head as a child and/or huffed too much paint in high school";  you ask them politely to play something else (if they're a good host, they'll acquiesce), and if they don't, just find a quieter corner of the house.

Of course, none of this applies when you're a fanboy.  I nearly got stabbed with a spork (I got lucky, I was wearing a thick hoodie) for saying I didn't like FF7 that much, by someone who had dressed up as Vincent Valentine the previous Halloween.

Basically what I'm saying is, people who don't respect the opinions of others get lumped into the group I label "dickwads".

When someone says "it wasn't that good" how's about we all interpret that as "I didn't think it was that good" instead of "I am making a statement that says this game is not all that good" because that is obviously not the case when we are talking about art in any form - it cannot be perceived objectively in any way, so why make it sound like others are trying to describe it that way?

Because some people - including some on this forum - have in fact used "X is not good" as shorthand for "No, really, X is not good and people who think X is good are stupid".

Precision.  It's what's in.
