Monty, The Monster Of Montauk
« on: 03 Aug 2008, 13:53 »

I'm going to hide a picture of this behind this link because it might not be for the squeamish.

Anyways I guess a dead creature of some kind washed up in Long Island recently and people don't know what it is! Maybe it's viral marketing but I guess everyone is denying that which is uh kind of not how viral marketing works? Here's a CNN report, a New York Magazine article, and the Gawker post that started it all.

Personally I am a bit skeptical!

That just looks like a half-roasted pig. Considering it's LI, probably some Puerto Ricans having a cookout on the shore nearby and something happened to them, and the pig got washed into the surf.

I stumbled it not so long ago. There was a guy commented on one of the posts saying it was most likely a dog that had washed up. He explained it pretty well. I'll try and find the article that linked to it again.

Yeah, that could definitely be a sea-bloated dog. The second pic has a better angle.

Not sure if id say pug. Mainly the fact that i think that for a pug, the jaw/jawbone is to long. Observe:

Also, the hair that is left behind its head is to long for a pug methinks.

Dog, yes. (The 2nd pic makes it much easier to identify the skull/canineinity)

We need someone to place a shoe/ruler next to the critter, its way to tricky to guess scales on this!

Oh yeah, your right. Hmmm.... With that size, and skull, id say, maybe a jack russell? Would fit the legs as well, i think...

Also, linds, whats sad about a dead animal? Death is as much part of life as birth! Be happy the critter got a buttload of attention in this time of dreadfull news!

If you have a look at the first link on the gawker site (http://gawker.com/5032170/montauk-monster-vole-or-satan) you'll see pics comparing it with a water rat.  The pics of its skull look like a match with an xray of a water rat's skull.  The body just looks like it's bloated and half-eaten/decomposed.

No that would be exactly how viral marketing works. You wouldn't want people to realize too soon that it's a marketing ploy because then they'd lose interest; as long as it's a mystery people will keep talking about it, but once it's not a mystery they'll stop caring. Remember the Simpsons episode about the fake angel and the mall?

It just does. *shrug* Besides, calling the thing a "monster" makes it sadder, because it's just some poor dead animal, not some ferocious hell beast come to eat your face.

Man, if I die and my corpse is mistaken for some kind of monster, I would say that I went out in a pretty outstanding manner.

The face makes me think boxer, with compensation for bloating and such. Again, a poor size reference.

I clicked the link, and it led me to a Colbert Report clip that nearly caused me to spit whiskey sour all over my laptop.

I find it very odd that people are so astounded.  Dead animals look weird.  Dead animals in water look even weirder.  Kids these days don't go trudging around near rivers or in the woods much, do they?

No, not really, because the chances of getting stabbed or raped or stabbed and raped are probably much higher than ten years ago.

Actually they're probably not.  The chance of it being reported widely if it happens is greater, though.

Definitely a fake.

Whatever they are trying to get publicity for (I assume it's a movie or something) isn't doing such a great job of it considering I have no idea what they are marketing here.
Spore.

But seriously, I'm going to keep quiet on this for now, because this could be anything.
