the hickory stripe jacket is kind of neat, my only qualm is that the 2nd pair of shorts look like you could have made them yourself for the price of one old pair of pants. and they don't seem to have as much shape as the 1st pair.

I would agree Sam, but finding pants that fit me well for under $30 (that was the cost of the shorts) is nearly impossible!

Jodie, your new clothes look hot!

Fashion advice thread, please venture an opinion. My friend and I are going to a formal dinner tomorrow, and he's wearing an off-white suit, black shirt, and white tie (he's got dark skin, so the combination looks pretty awesome). His question- white shoes or black?

Here is a comparison photo of Jay-Z and Diddy to compare shoe colour.

Man I think both Jay-Z and P. Diddy are handsome, fashionable dudes but those are either some awful pictures, some awful outfits, or both.

I'd say definitely black shoes though.

EDIT: I don't know or care who this guy from Gossip Girl is (Google got me this picture) but this is an example of a white suit done right.

I also was gonna say "definitely black shoes" as well. Jay's looks almost unbalanced, drawing the eyes downward with all the white on the bottom.

White suits are only fro 'pimps' and black guys. You say 'off-white' but the exact shade is really important. Basically it sounds like a terrible idea.

White suits are only for 'pimps'.

This is true. Especially with a black shirt underneath. A light grey suit looks pretty damn good in summer, though.

Didn't Michael Jackson wear white suits? I wished he was still black… He got weird when he was white.

Personally, I've always gone kinda Johnny Cash style in an all black suit, including tie, but I'm trying to move out of that. Makes me look like a bouncer. I've been trying to integrate leather jackets and trench coats into my formal wear, and it has worked nicely, in my opinion.

Where I said my friend has "dark skin", I meant he has dark skin. i.e. the dude is black.

Doesn't change the fact that he is doing it right. Had I actually gone to my year 12 formal, I would have worn a white suit though with a white shirt, not black - and I would have looked good. The other slightly different suit look that looks great is black suit, black shirt, white tie.

Concept floating in head:

Black pinstripe pants. Black pinstripe vest. Dark blue, patterned shirt. Red tie.

Honestly I'd lose the blue patterned shirt and go for something in a flat, lighter color (I don't think dark would contrast enough against the rest), and go for a louder tie instead.

Also, I don't like vests but hey, you guys seem to.

That's very difficult to answer without pics... I mean, what kind of pattern does the shirt have? What shade of dark blue? What shade of red does the tie have? This thread needs more pics anyway, so put on the outfit and let us see!

So yeah, as I said this thread needs more pics, so what do you guys think of my skirt?

I really love it, too bad it's too cold to be wearing it this time of the year. Summer, please hurry!

In my head, this looks very flattering, but I agree that it's hard to say without seeing pictures of the articles of clothing.

I've said it before, but I love blue and black. And pinstripes are attractive.

Question in a similar vein... there's a pre-clinical dinner coming up, and I was thinking black suit with a deepish brown/maroon patterned shirt (thin black stripes) and a really _bright_ light blue tie. Should there be a vest involved? Is a vest a worthwhile investment??

No pinstripes for me, alas. I dunno if I like them against patterned clothing! Apart from that, y to Ozy... esp. if it's a really nice red tie. I like blue and black as a combo, if the blue is really dark.

Kris that skirt is super cute but maybe a bit too long. Also I think you will probably be waiting a long time to wear it if Norway is as similar to Fargo as I think.

pinstripe vest. Dark blue, patterned shirt

I say no; stripes and patterns don't, in in my experience, work together.

so what do you guys think of my skirt?

Gorgeous pattern, but about 6 inches too long (or possibly too short) for someone your age.  Apart from the pattern, it is very much in the style of the UK Laura Ashley chain, which these days is distinctly middle-aged - in the nicest possible way, I hasten to add, as my wife still wears some...

I say, if you can look at the tie and shirt together and it doesn't make you avert your eyes, wear it. Sneak in as much color where you can.

If you have a vest, just try it out and see if you like it. If you don't already have one, I personally wouldn't go out and get/make one. Some of the gents on this thread have looked really great in vests, but unless you find one that really suits you, I've always thought they looked bad.

I think Kris' skirt is great, and you should wear it with blue shoes and a blue sleeveless (preferably strappy or tank) top. The blue must match the flowers exactly.

I know what Paul means about it being a bit long, but I think you have the bone structure to carry it off. I have some similar length skirts but I'm a bit more rotund than you and I have a fairly round face, so I just look like I'm dressing up in my mother's clothes. Which I often am.

I also got pants, I've discovered that the absolute best thing to get consignment is jeans- already broken in, and I got $180 jeans for $23. No complaints.

I really like that bag but I'm intrigued by the strap; how is it fastened on? I have a similar shaped bag and the straps come from the edge, which I think is fairly standard for shoulder bags. Quite often it's irritating because I have too much in it and I need to carry it across my body rather than just on one shoulder, but the strap doesn't take kindly to being stretched that way. If I'm seeing it right, your bag might have a more sensible set up.

The strap is sewn into the back of the bag where you can see it in the third picture. It then goes through a hole cut in the flap allowing the flap to open and close without moving the strap.

Manda, that top is pretty cute!

@ thrift store pants- yeah, I need go to back to Beacon's Closet and see what they have. I didn't have much luck last time because it is basically racks upon racks of clothing organized only by color or, in the case of jeans, by the fact that they are jeans. A bit intimidating, but probably completely worth it.

That is why I'm completely in love with my go-to consignment shop, The Mustard Seed in DC. They organize pants by size. They're also pretty picky about what they'll take, since they give you money for the clothes you bring in, so there aren't the racks and racks of awful mom-jeans like the thrift shops around here.

Jodie- thanks:D I'm picky as hell about jeans, and these just fit awesome

fatty/Ali/whatever you wanna be called: That is an awesome bag! I've been looking for a nice-looking shoulder bag of about that size for ages now, but I can never find one I like or like and can afford/justify paying lots of money for. So I'm lugging around a 5 year old worn out canvas thing from H&M that is about to fall apart and looks like crap, so it's not like I can use it when trying to look at least semi-nice.

Today I donated two plastic bags of clothes to the Salvation Army thrift stores! It felt good, both because I got tons of closet space and because other people might actually use them. I went through all my clothes, and basically threw away or donated everything I hadn't worn in about 2 years or that didn't fit me anymore and wouldn't in the near future. Didn't expect it to feel as good as it did, honestly.

Ok so I was thinking as a dude, I want to get a fauxhawk or generally a trim.  Thats not really a question.  But is it ok if I dye my hair a little darker, maybe a shade of light brown?  Or is that too cheezy on a guy, I was told it was by some lady friends but want a broader opinion.

Cheshire Cat: You'd look pretty good with a darker shade of hair. If you colour it, match it to the tone of your hair and don't go too dark. don't do streaks/lowlights, tips or in parts. Consider using a dye that gradually darkens your hair - i know you can get them somewhere.

Pictures 2, 4 and 5 are mega-attractive. Just throwing that out there. Less self deprecation, more confidence because you're suave.
