Red ties are kind of garish and boring though, I am much more interested in purples and greens and pastels.

Let's put a smile on that face.

Half the pictures on the current front page of the Sartorialist are ridiculous.

either ridiculous or just incredibly bland. so if that what you're into, okay.
but i personally would not consider that blog a source of fashion inspiration.

(i will post pictures of clothes i actually like later.)

Having one black suit, and wearing it all the time is more my style. I just think it would be awesome, if I wore the same suit every day for like a month or two straight. Just walk around, and do casual things while wearing a suit. Perhaps, have different dress shirts, and ties, but thats about it. The same suit though. I need to get a classier flask, mine isn't classy enough.

I just went to look at it again, and decided that youre both nuts. Aside from maybe the face prints thing which as far as I can tell is just him showing that people are wearing that, but most of those outfits are stunning.

Everybody bitching about empire waists

You guys are retarded. You know, there is a difference between empire waists and babydoll styles. Look:

Empire Waists:

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8

You will notice distinctly slimmer lines than the Babydoll silhouette. All you fuckers who think empire waists are the ones who make you look pregnant are wrong, because it is babydolls. Babydoll anything usually has weird gathering at the waist seam in front, It is based on the babydoll lingerie, which happened when people started wearing like camisoles and lingerie and pajama-looking clothes which came into style around 10-ish years ago, and for whatever reason never died. Empire waists have been in style since post-revolutionary France and the Regency period in England, which is roughly 200 and 125 years ago, respectively.

Babydolls:

1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

My older sister wears a ton of babydoll stuff even though she is kind of fat. It is a really terrible look on her but she likes it so whatever.

Man, I don't want to sound rude or anything but I find most of everyone's fashion choices really boring. Personally I prefer this kind of stuff

[goth/cyberpunk stuff]

NB: I would have put pictures in thise post but I didn't want to make untoward sexual advances at your bandwith.

Pre-made corsets almost never fit properly, or I would agree with most of your suggestions. Most of what I will wear to Dragon*Con this weekend will probably make you happy. Give me a few days.

Also, hello vintage-inspired swimwear!

I have my grandmother's swimsuit from 1954. It is green. It is better than that one. I will maybe take pictures someday.

Suits are excellent. If you want a guide to properly fitting a jacket or trousers, I can offer some advice.

You should probably get more than one. You will also need a variety of ties and dress shirts, as well as belts, shoes, pocket squares, tie bars, and possibly cuff links to do it properly.

Not really. A black suit and two or three white shirts is all the style you'll ever need.

Only if you want to look like a member of popular indie rock band The Hives. Mostly you need some variety and pizzazz to make the look Pop!

Reservoir. Dogs. You need a black tie for that, though. And some cheap sunglasses, but why wouldn't you have sunglasses? Unless you can't afford prescription sunglasses or something.

I agree with katie on the definition of empire waists and baby dolls, but I do not condone the language. I would never call you 'fuckers' or 'retarded' because you didn't know all the fashion styles ever.

The difference between looking like a politian and looking hip is the cut of the suit as well as the combination and colour. A lot of fashionistas would tell you that black suits are only for formal evening wear. Day and work should be restricted to charcoal, midnight blue or grey. If you have a more traditional cut of suit, you're more likely to look like a politian or old man. If you have something a bit more spiky and trendy you'll obviously look more hip.

James Bond only wears dinner suits, but you can sort of see the evolution of style in the many films and actors.

Ok yeah so I didn't know the difference between an empire waist and a babydoll.  I think I may have to shoot myself in the head as penitence :'(

Seriously though, thanks for pointing that out, Katie.  Now I know that it's the babydoll ones I hate, and the empire waists can actually look quite good.

By charcoal do you mean dark gray, like a charcoal rubbing? Because briquettes are pretty well black.

Surely the babydoll is just a type of empire line dress? It still has the empire waistline, as I understood it. And no, I don't know anything about fashion but I hate that waistline 99% of the time on 99% of people. Bleh.

If you personally want to wear it of course that's fine, whatever floats your boat  :-D

Well, I mean I don't really expect most people and especially dudes to remember this stuff. It would be enough to remember that there is a difference, even if you don't remember what that difference is. It would be like being able to tell the difference between two different shades of the same colour: you know there is something different, you just can't name it exactly.

But no one does.

I always thought babydoll stuff had no real waist. Like this:

But I don't really care what babydoll is. I have two tops that could be considered babydoll and I bought them for comfort, mostly. But I like empire waists. Depending on the style, they can be flattering on just about any body type.

Hello thread!

I'm putting my money where my mouth is. Not literally, because that would be kind of disgusting. This is an outfit I wore to a gig last night.

Do you like it?

I did.

Yeah, it's a green silk cravat. I got it from an op-shop for a few dollars. I used to go op-shopping a lot, but not so much anymore as I'm a whole bunch busier. But I definitely recommend it as a way of finding cheap and awesome clothes.

Okay, random clothing question, in case anyone has actually tried it on/has it: American Apparel's white t-shirts (the regular fine jersey ones, for the ladies), how see-through are they? More or less than fitted white t-shirts tend to be, or about the same?

ViolentDove, I personally think you look ridiculous. However, I am 34 and work in a library, and I wear pantyhose, so you should probably listen to these younguns and keep dressing like that. Unless you want to hit on much older women. Because they'd probably laugh at you if you were wearing that.

It's pretty rad, though the cravat throws me off a bit. I'd personally go without - it's a bit, er, pretentious? That would work well for a casual dinner at an upscale restaurant, for example.

This is standard gig fare for me.

It's not a thing here so I'm comfortable with it.

The outfit is simple and workmanlike, takes me five minutes to put on and saves me from having to wear a coat to the venue.
