Dark/black pants and a light pastel colored shirt with a tie that will offset the color of the shirt should work nicely.

So apparently I'm going to need some warm clothes for Boston. Ozy, in gabbly, has suggested some kind of parka. Help me out forumites! Show me where to get the raddest parkas!

I got a rad wool-blend coat at Steve and Barry's for $9 before I headed out to Boston last March. Dunno if you have those in your upside-down land, though.

OK fucking hell I guess I won't be taking any pictures of me in the jeans I bought because the zipper was such a shit quality that it broke when I was trying to undo it tonight.  I guess maybe I am partially to blame because all my other jeans are button-fly, but fucking hell I wouldn't expect a brand new pair of goddamn fucking jeans to break with a little tug at the fly.

I'm thinking about buying a ~ $90 shirt from this website: http://www.rockmount.com/shirts/vintage.asp

$90 seems really a lot of money for a shirt, so I would advise you against it either way. Except of course if $90 is not as much money to you as it is to me. Then I'd say go for it, but please don't buy one of the ugly ones!

i vote no. i feel that only vintage western old people can get away with vintage western shirts. like the old guy who sits out front of the supermarket with a cowboy hat and smokes. i assume you are not one of those guys, and even if you admire them, it just wouldn't be the same if you wore one [of those shirts].

I love westerns, a lot, but seriously that is extremely western. It looks like something to be worn at a rodeo. I've decided I am going to go to the thrift store, and look for a suit jacket that fits all right and then go from there.

i got a skirt! and a lacy-top cami! and wore them with a button-up shirt, and felt quite competent. i went out looking for colors and sweaters, either in combination or separately, but they were all way ugly. seriously, if i had an army of dinosaurs, i would set them upon the ladies' department. every year. :-D

O hay guise, I took pictures the other night.

This is me in a white tshirt and some jeans. This is probably close to what I'd normally wear from now on, just with different colors.

And here's one of my backside for the ladies (and some of the guys, I guess?)

What do you think of that?

Here's my next question, what can I do with my hair? I'm growing it out to be longer, I think. I dunno if I want to cut it again. I've leaned toward yes, but then not had it done for fear that I'd want to grow it more. I need ladies' (and some of the guys, I guess?) opinions.

Pants, that doesn't look so bad at all! Also, your glasses do fit pretty well, but they are kind of weird from an angle, I guess.

Honestly, I'd keep your hair pretty short. Lots of guys like to grow their hair out long, and most guys don't look that great with it. But we still do it anyway! I mean, if you want to, go for it, but I would advise against it, personally.

I'm with the others. I was actually looking at something similar but my god are those particular shirts garish and horrifying. I went through that entire site and literally did not see one shirt I would wear, let alone pay $90 for. If you buy one of those shirts I will travel to your home for the sole purpose of shaking my head disapprovingly at you.

Those Tokyoflash watches are pretty nifty but I struggle even with an analog display so those just scare me a little.

PantsFTW, you give me a bit of a Ben Folds vibe. He looks pretty dang OK with slightly longer hair.

Maybe do like him?

Back when I was a freshman in high school (that whopping 5 years ago) I had my hair much like that, really long and shaggy. Then when I was a sophomore I decided it'd be cool to grow my hair down to my shoulders. I have gone back and looked at pictures from that time. I was wrong, so wrong. I never intend to grow my hair down to my shoulders, but I wondered if I could go a little bit longer without looking like a douche or looking stupid. You have confirmed that. Thank you forum goers, it is solely you that I trust with my fashion.

Also: I was too scared to click the link to the $90 western shirts. Because I know people that would wear them.

Suggestions on better glasses? I've only ever had the thick "emo" style glasses (this is what they were called when I got them 4 years ago). Also, people I talk to give me the "you look good in all pairs of glasses" BS so I never have a good opinion. Thinking of going with contacts so I can wear sunglasses.

--

This is my color theory pertaining to clothing section:
bainidhe_dub, I've never liked those types of button up tops, something about the design on them, just don't like things that have odd sparkling bitz. Seems like it'd come off then there'd be sparkly gubbins all over the place.
Other than that, I'd say its a very effective outfit, if a little boring, but that may be a product of the colors being similar and not having a good complemenatry color in the mix. Do you have anything like a pastel yellow or a subdued orange that you can add to that outfit/color combination? Not something that is bright or garish, just something that would break up the color a bit, perhaps a belt?
On the other hand, if you're going for a professional look, then that is good, I can't really see what the necklace you're wearing looks like, but I'll assume its good. Again, if you could throw some yellow or orange into a necklace or bracelet, it would really help to add some good pleasing colors to the outfit.

For Ballard, instead of putting them in the photo thread:

Some of these are fairly simple outfits, but I like them.
This, this, this, this, this, this, this and this.

Just a few examples.

Ok I was wrong, maybe two.

But I mean, the first one - wtf is happening, is he an elf?
The second one is ok but maybe a little boring.
The third one I would probably wear!  It is interesting without being garish.
The fourth one is like the second one but cut kind of like a hoodie.  I hate light grey clothes, so I would not wear it.
The fifth one I might wear if it were not light grey.  Perhaps if it were charcoal with black detailing or black with dark blue detailing or something else that would not make me look like someone who has drawn the details in with a thick texta.
The sixth I guess is a decent colour and cut but the checks are goddawful.
The seventh is ridiculous and would not be taken seriously on anyone who didn't look as good as that Cesc Fabregas lookalike duder.
The eighth is another "might wear" thinger.  Not sure about the colours, but the cut & the style is alright.

Maybe it's just me, but all those dudes look like tools, with the exception of the third to last. I like the cut a lot

Also a lot of those are basically just hoodies without the hood. If you're a skateboarder/scene kid, then classy, elegant dress doesn't really apply to you so it's not much of an issue. I was referring more to the chic look such as in the third to last, which is very difficult to pull off.

More tools. Seriously, all these guys would look great were it not for the ridiculous cardigans. Well ok, maybe not the plaid half tuck guy.

I don't think I will ever understand you two, Ballard and Est. Those all look good to me! Wear a form-fitting cardigan and it is almost guaranteed to be Awesome, unless the color is too close to your skin tone. Bonus points if it is argyle!

Also I am totally going to always refer to David Beckham as that plaid half-tuck guy.

Lastly, Mr.S.Mars, you should maybe trim the bottom so the rest of your face catches up with the Manly that is on the bottom of your chin.

As a girl and I have to admit I'm not a big fan of cardigans. They can look good on skinny indie guys and I won't deny that I have a soft spot for them sometimes. I only like a few of the ones linked, and none of the ones on those celebrities.

I'd prefer guys to have a bit of masculinity to be honest. Cardigans just don't do anything for dudes who aren't super skinny and basically are a bit to effeminate for me.

Yeah I'm gonna veto cardigans on dudes. Maybe it is because I prefer things with more structure and weight, like jackets and even hoodies, but I would not even recommend cardigans for most girls, unless they were also dressed in one of these and these and these and could pull off this.

Guys who wear cardigans just look like they really wanted to wear a t-shirt saying "Touch me, I'm sensitive". Certainly the guys I know who wear cardigans will make a point of being very effeminate and it's really affected and sickening. The thing is, no guy buys cardigans because they're often cold and require an extra layer. There's this big fashion model thing about them, there always seem to be catwalk photos of guys in cardigans with big cheekbone hollows and floppy hair, but no one really looks like that. Or wants to. Don't wear cardigans, guys.

Question: I have a new high-waisted, knee-length skirt, for interviews, jobs and that kind of thing, in a sort of dark olive shade (a bit like a WRN uniform if you're familiar with 1930s British army clothing) and a matching jacket. The problem is, the jacket is horrific. It has tails, and the bottom part sticks out like wings, and the shoulders are too padded, and I look like a kid dressing up. The skirt is fantastic, I don't want to have to discard the whole thing, but what on earth goes with olive? I have no jackets which I can see fitting. Any suggestions?

I don't know that many jackets really suit high waisted skirts. I would try layering two blouses/camisoles instead. Darker greys and washed-out browns on a pale cream highlight would be your best bet.

As an aside to beards, I can't grow one yet, but I've still got time. My roommate, who is Philipino, can grow a pretty full beard, a neckbeard, and a goatee pretty well. His latest style was working towards a Fu Man Chu until his work (as a Kung Fu instructor of all things) made him shave. I have to say, if I could pull off a Fu Man Chu, I would in a minute, just to have had it.

Well, at least someone agrees! I'm not saying everyone should wear cardigans, but a lot of people do look great in them, imo. I guess people here have very different opinions on what is considered to look good, though, but yeah.. I've never really made a connection between cardigans and being effeminate, either. Heck, even my brother, who is like..well, definitely not effeminate, bought one and said it was brilliant. He's not skinny either, yet it still looks good on him. Not too warm, like a hoodie, but practical to wear when the weather demanded something more than a t-shirt or shirt.

Shane, keep wearing and liking your cardigans!

For starters, anyone that says "You can't wear shorts" should come to Chicago in the summer.

I'm coming to this way late, but I don't wear shorts in Chicago in the summer. I'm not saying you can't, mind. But I grew up in the South, and spent most of a summer in the Philippines, wearing khakis. Chicago's not so bad. Also, Lunchie's right, legs are weird.

Seriously, what the fuck? I don't even wear shorts that much, but the group of people in here saying "shorts are the bane of civilization ahbloo-bloo-bloo" pisses me off. I asked a couple of my female friends if they think that guys look bad in shorts, and every single one of them looked at me like I was crazy and asked, incredulously, "What? No. Who the hell told you that? Guys can look plenty sexy in shorts if they mix it with something else," or words to that effect. Further, a woman's legs are one of the sexiest parts of her body, when shown off effectively.

I think it might also depend on the guy as well. I am pale as a ghost and hairy, shorts are not good for me. They are comfortable to sit around the house in, though. Like sweatpants for when the weather is warm.

"What? No. Who the hell told you that? Guys can look plenty sexy in shorts if they mix it with something else,"
So I shouldn't wear just shorts then?
This is so disappointing.

This is what we call boxers.

Actually, thanks to you people (yes, you all), I've stopped wearing shorts except when I'm at home. I realized that I have okay legs, but I'm still really skinny with really muscular calves, so it looks weird. Now I wear only pants, whether it be the really nice Levi's I intend to buy more of or dress pants because I want to look fucking classy, it's pants for me. Also, wearing pants just helps with my name.

Man do tastes differ... I love cardigans, and I do wear them when it's a bit too chilly to just have a t-shirt but too hot to have like a proper sweater or something. They're a good way to add variety to your wardrobe, when combined with colourful shirts and t-shirts. One thing I can agree with, however, is that sensitive indie-guys seem to have a gift for turning cardigans into really boring garments. I dunno, maybe they just need more colour in their lives!

And I also think the beard either needs to go or to be tamed. Different strokes for different folks, I guess :o

Agreed, I don't wear shorts in Atlanta in the summer, I just wear... not khaki colored, but similar to khaki material.

I wore shorts the other day! I found some of my old hella short jean shorts and I decided that since I had shaved that morning wearing them would be ok! They were pretty hot. (Usually I wear rock climbing pants.)

I would wear a black leather jacket with it, maybe? I would actually try and pick some bolder colours because otherwise you will look like you are trying to camouflage yourself. Fatty said something about dark grey that might work. Also try navy maybe? I would personally probably do something ridiculous and find something in yellow or purple or blue and wear that with it.

I just need to restate the fact that I like shorts on men, and I like them on women.

But then again, the only things I really hate clothing wise are capri-type deals. Like.. they end somewhere between below the kneecap and above the ankles. Augh, it makes people's leg's look so stumpy. Only really super tall stickish girls can pull it off sometimes imo. But seriously, why does no one but me realize it's really unflattering to people's legs?

I do, I do!

katie, if you post climbing pants pictures now I am sorry, that's really just proving the point; those pants are for function, not looking good.

Actually, the ones I am wearing now make my ass look pretty damn good, and my other black pair are actually right at knee length and tie up kind of like knickers I guess? But I haven't got a camera, sorry.
