Because generalizations are useful and appropriate when talking about the human form since some things are likely to be true for the majority of people. Most people don't have the relatively long, lean and youthful frames fashion designers often have in mind when designing clothes. Likewise, some things are just terrible ideas. Like crocs.

fashion is an individual, completely subjective thing.

It's funny you say that, because earlier today I happened to be flipping through Republic, and Plato titled one chapter "Capris: They Never Look Good" and then proceeds to launch into what scholars generally regard as history's first empirically true logical argument.

Depends on the shade. Too bright, makes you look like a whore, too dark, makes you look too gothic. Right tone, with the right match with the clothes, and you'll look great.

Guy's advice.

Also red lipstick makes your face look like a vagina, and we are all in agreement that vaginas are rad.

Man, that is way too general of a question. It's makeup and makeup is crazy subjective by nature. My maternal grandmother can still pull off red lipstick largely due to her skintone and her overall look. On the other hand, some of my paternal cousins looked trashy in their ill-advised attempts to incorporate red lipstick.

Its a darkish red. I have moderately pale skin, and blackish reddish hair. I tend to wear darker colors, inculding darker make up.

Basically my question is, am I gonna look silly as hell?

that was horrible.

I think that if the lipstick goes well with the hair, it should look okay, though I really don't know much about makeup (I'm a male, and I don't play in a goth or black metal band).

Agreed, with pics.

(personally I love red red red lipstick, but I know a lot of people that can't pull it off. But I really dig that white blonde + red red lipstick look. Gwen Steffani, Scarlett Johanson, marilyn monroe, etc. IE if you can't you REALLY can't, if you can, it's awesome.)

I want to try wearing red lipstick, too, but I haven't had a chance to wander the makeup aisle to see what shade might look nice, if any, because I've seen friends try to pull off the red red shade and it just looks like they smeared melted red crayon on. They were all tan and blond and I'm the complete opposite, pale and dark brown hair.

I've also have been trying to think up outfits with fishnet stockings where they don't look out of place or trashy.

Man I think a classic red lip is classy as all hell. Just don't wear a whole lot of other makeup. When I do it, I just put on mascara and maybe a little eyeliner, but nothing too dramatic. Get a lip brush and put a little on at a time, even a sheer red is still gonna look classy. (PS I am a dark haired paleface too)

I love wearing bright red lipstick. I am super pale so it looks really striking, and I don't wear any other makeup with it either. That is how you do it. Keep the rest of your face simple and pick the right shade!

Alyssa wears fairly red lipstick a lot, and it looks quite nice! I guess it can be over-done on some women, but most can pull it off.

I will post pictures of me in red lipstick, wearing one of those dresses I bought, with my septum tusk, when my camera arrives in the mail. Hopefully, I will get it before Wednesday, or on Wednesday, so I can take pictures of my bird tattoos.

Is this okay?  My boyfriend wants me to try something in a more fire-engine shade, but I'm afraid that going any redder will make me look whorish (please excuse the PhotoBooth; my real camera has broken).

Also, I've been trying to find a pair of cute rain boots, because my only closed-toed shoes are canvas, and we're starting to get some rain.  I've almost bought this pair a couple of times, but I can't help coming back to the thought that rain boots make everyone's legs look fat.  Do they?  Am I better off with the mid-calf kind?  Or should I forget rain boots altogether and invest in a pair of waterproof tennis shoes (or something funky like this)?

I really do like that lipstick on you, Elizzybeth, but I think if you're going to wear it then keep the eye makeup minimal, like in that photo.

I was told by a makeup-lady (doing my formal makeup) that if you want to wear something like bright lipstick, then the rest of your makeup (eyeshadow and whatnot) should be more subtle, so that people will focus more on your lips, rather than having the two aspects of your face fighting for attention. The same goes for having dark eye makeup, if you're going to do that then just wear gloss or light lipstick, so that the attention is more on your eyes.

I was always under the impression rain boots made your legs look thinner, because there's usually so much extra space around the calf

Order them from L.L.Bean. Or try goodwill. Or go to the mall and try an anchor store. Or look online and find something you like.

Basically, what I am saying is that it pretty much works like buying ANY clothing item.

Opinions on these shoes? I basically only ever wear sneakers, but I've been thinking I should have a pair of decent looking shoes that look, well, more "grown up" and/or "dressed up", and a pair of "boots" or whatever this is might be a good idea? The shaft has to be pretty low, because my calves are massive.. Anyways, I think I kinda like these, but I'm not sure why, and I don't know about the bowtie-thing in the back..

Also, finding nice looking winter shoes that don't cost a fortune is proving difficult as hell! I'm pretty sure I'll end up going for the wool socks + Chucks plan again, because 1) it doesn't really matter if the Chucks get ruined because they're already pretty beat and 2) I can fit two pairs of wool socks inside one of the pairs I have, but sigh, I really want a pair of niiice winter shoes that also do not make me feel like Bambi on the ice.

Winter shoes, or winter boots? Boots are more likely to have the tread you are looking for, you still can't run across ice, but you aren't likely to slip.

Those boots look good, not boring, but not overdone.

For not feeling like Bambi I HIGHLY recommend these.

They are small and lightweight so when you get inside you can slip them off your shoes and into a backpack, so you can wear your fashion-forward shoes inside.

I was going to buy a pair of those last year, actually! But then all of a sudden, the ice melted before I got my ass downtown to find some, and they apparently cost like $50, which is almost a new pair of shoes - but I'm hoping there are cheaper alternatives.

No way. I think I got mine for much more like $20. I bought a second pair when I lost the ones my parents had given me and I don't think I'd have spent $50 on them.

Well, yeah, but you're not in the Land of Expensive. And it is difficult to find non-Norwegian online stores that will sell stuff like that to countries that aren't the US or Canada, especially without adding a fortune in shipping. I once wanted to get a bottle of shampoo from an online store, and while the shampoo cost like $20, they wanted $90 in shipping. Maybe eBay can be my friend.

You go into a shop, you try on things you like, you buy the things you like that fit. Alternatively you purchase things according to your measurements on websites. There is no guarantee of quality.

This is actually what has stopped me from buying one already from online. I have no idea the sort of fit they have. Which is why I'd need to go try some on.

You could ask a trusted friend to go shopping with you.  Someone who has a general idea of the quality of the clothes in the stores that you go into, someone who can honestly tell you whether or not something looks ridiculous.

Jeez. Use the right words! Clearly these foot garments are a British invention; we need them the most.

Rubber boots! Also, I think "rain boots" is fairly self explanatory.

Tonight/tomorrow, this month's student loan trickles into my account. I think I might just go ahead and order the boots mentioned earlier, because even though buying shoes online is scary (sizing and comfort), I can always return them. In other news, I found the most comfortable and pretty grey peacoat today, at only $115. It makes me sad that I cannot justify buying it.

Galoshes are different - they are simply rubber overshoes, not full-scale Wellington boots.  Wikipedia tells me that they are sometimes called "rubbers" in the US, though I rather thought that was something a little different...

Oh, and if they are green, you lose, stylewise.  (Um, mine are green...)

I think rain boots are the best name for them to be honest. Or rubber boots. They actually help the listener understand what they are.

Need actual fashion advice

So prom dress shopping is starting up soon. I need some help, since most of you know what I look like I don't think it's a real issue. I'm thinking either black, red, or some shade of green.

I'd like something less um.. poofy, and a little more um.. not poofy. I'm trying to think about neck lines, with my bust really 50s cuts work alright, strapless and halter are also alright as well. I need styles that are more form hugging to the waist because otherwise I look like a bit of a box. I'm really really 'hourglass' shaped, and a bit taller than most, really my issue with cuts is how to flaunt it without looking like a trollop. I'm really lost on all of this. Don't worry about prices/colours, I'm trying to get ideas on cuts and style.
