It is the things on your feet that deign to call themselves sandals that should never see the light of day.

I was going to speak out against those but I bit my tongue for the sake of politeness to the point of tasting blood. HOWEVER. I have been drinking a bit so I'm going to strike the happy medium of throwing my utmost support behind Clara's sentiment but avoid directly referring to the ugly as sin items in question.

Paul they are kinda ok for you because you are a) a dude and b) a tourist in that picture but I am sure there are better options out there.

Also, sports sandals are not really a fashion thing? They are functional as hell and you don't want to go out into anything but streets wearing non-sports sandals. And I know if there's anyone else out there like me they avoid wearing closed footed things in the summer.

It is ok to wear shorts and Sandals if you toasted the falling of the Berlin Wall, or personally fought Communism.

(fear of shorts here)

I'm with you... mostly because I hate doing laundry and finding socks that match is a lost cause for me.  Sandals win, in my book.

Teva sandals make me think of splashing in creeks and goofy biology teachers. So they are maybe not high fashion, but they are totally fine in my book.

Then again, I also like to wear these awful denim shorts, so I am maybe not the best judge.

I honestly think these look kind of cute:/

That photo is a case study in how cute people are generally bad judges of these things in general. There's a bunch of things going on with that outfit that could become a complete trainwreck if you were heavier/shaped differently. Luckily, you are Manda, but I still don't really think it's a great outfit in general despite the fact that you are adorable.

Anyway though, I don't really care too much about sandals. I don't like them and would never wear them, but as Drill King said, they are casual wear and I don't get all huffy when I seem them. They're not horrible, I just doubt I'll ever see someone wearing shorts and sandals and think they look sharp.

Exactly. As Drill King said, they're really not about fashion. I've worn and will continue to wear a big black and yellow reflective ski jacket while out snowmobliing. It's truly hideous, but that really has nothing to do with why I wear it.

I'm sorry, man, but if I wear shoes in the summer they get stinky.  Plus the sandals I have are just insanely comfy.

yeah, i can understand that.

but for me, being an avid skateboarder and acrobat, i pretty much have to wear shoes all year round. if it gets too hot and i'm not skating or something i'll just take my shoes off and go barefoot.

at one point i did own a pair of sandals though (gasp!). they were all velcro-ey and waterproof and their sole purpose was for walking through rivers. then i outgrew them and subsequently stopped walking through rivers so i never got another pair.

Sandals can be fashionable, yes. Just not flip-flops/thongs/whatever you call them. I mean, they can be sort of fashionable but they will never really be fancy or anything like that.

I pretty much wear flip flops all summer, except when I'm wearing fancy clothes.

Also, I am not against the sandals people think are ugly. They are good for doing things outside in. Especially in water, when you might worry about a shoe being swept away.

Personally, flip flops are fucking awesome during the summer. Tevas, and full sandals, on the other hand, are not so much (at least in my opinion).

People around here wear flip-flops year round, all over town (I've even seen professors teaching in flip-flops, which weirded me out at first).  But the girls tend to wear things like these, rather than gaudy, Hawaiian-themed stuff:

I've come to really like it, actually.  There are some really cute flip-flops out there, and in this climate, they're the best casual street shoes.  I think something like the ones on the left might even be okay in some professional "fancy" contexts (though obviously not all).

My advisor runs the summer micro course most years, so I usually teach the lab portion, and I honestly wear flip-flops while I teach. Biosafety gets a little testy if they catch me doing it, but fuck them, they're so damn comfortable (especially if you can find a good pair of reef's).

Dear Fashion Advice thread,

I recently came upon a rather nice pair of dark wash jeans in my closet. They fit me rather well, and over all I quite like them. HOWEVER(!) they have a big hole in the back of the right thigh! :(  a patch will not fix this, and there isn't much I can do about it other that cut it off and make them camping shorts.

However, I also came upon an idea. What if I bought black tights to wear under them? Would this look completely silly? They look so nice with my black chucks, and I think if I just wore them with a black shirt, they'd look ok. It'd kinda have a whole south city punk things going on, which works for me. Thoughts?

I think black tights under the jeans would be a neat idea, but only if you somehow make at least one other hole in them somewhere so it looks more like 'i am doing neat 80's fashions' rather than 'i have a hole in my jeans.'
Most times I am totally against purposely ripped or destroyed jeans but this is an instance where you can be creative I guess.

I have done the tights-under-jeans thing before for the exact same reason! Is the hole one of those stupid inexplicable rips that goes across the entire back of the thigh seam to seam?

I think it looks okay but it gets too warm with the double layer pretty quickly.

What about a giant patch? Also tights under holy jeans is good. I may or may not have done this when I was a teenager.

I think the jeans with tights could look really good but I would go for a more subdued colour like a dark purple or blue. On that note, what do you think of black tights or leggins or whatever that are mid-calf length, worn with a short denim skirt?

Thanks pen! :) I saw them on etsy made out of clay, but they cost like 40 dollars so I thought I'd rather make them myself, that's not only cheaper but also more fun.

I try to get a second opinion though ever since the debacle with the stormtrooper-of-death-T-Shirts and the Tetris ice-cream I made. At least before I go into mass production.

These are so awesome.

Re: Thongs. They are great for when you just need something on your feet, or if it's summer or you are going to the beach and need something you can wear and then hose the sand and salt off later. But I wouldn't wear them for any extended period of time, especially if a lot of walking will be done because your feet get really dirty. Practicalities aside, they look good on pretty much everyone unless your feet are really weird, but unless you go all fancy with the design on the strap then they're not a fashion statement.

I think it depends on your legs. Personally I have very muscular calves and couldn't pull that off, but it might suit you. Since it's cutting you off I feel like it can create the illusion that you're calves are wider than your knees (which is almost true in my case anyway) and look disproportional.

I've never worn tights (I've worn some rather tight pants, but not tights), but it seems like it would be similar to wearing long underwear under pants, something I've done when it gets cold out.

I think the jeans with tights could look really good but I would go for a more subdued colour like a dark purple or blue. On that note, what do you think of black tights or leggins or whatever that are mid-calf length, worn with a short denim skirt?

I have never ever seen that look good on anyone.

It's pretty deep into "only on an attractive people" and "only in spite of" territory.

I mean, if you have fantastic legs and great curves, tights and a denim skirt will look great on you. But you will still look absolutely stupid.
