Racial and reading (finished!)
« on: 05 Jul 2008, 06:13 »

So I'm in progress of a piece, and it's simple, I can't really tell which race I want to end up making the main subject. I'm leaning towards half black, yet everyone I know says whitey.

I also can't figure out what book I want him to be reading, this is all for a local music festival called Evolve soo..

Anyhow, any suggestions would be lovely.

You should have him reading Our Band Could Be Your Life.

the way he's holding the book, you would be looking at the back cover of it. that might prove to be a challenge.

maybe to reflect the theme of the piece, have his tshirt say something?

My instinct says to make him brown.
Also, the book is pretty large, it's not exactly the shape of a standard novel...

Looks pretty cool, but his facial structure seems off for a black/darker-skinned dude.  Looks more like a white hippy/surfer dude with dreads.

Also, do you hand-draw on paper, scan in then go over it or something?  The linework looks traced and kind of jarring, especially with the softness of the colouring and the other details you added after the main character.  The grass, the tree, the waves and the things coming out of the book for example look like they are done in one style, with the people, the tent and the kites standing out as if superimposed due to the outlines being very hard in relation to basically everything else in the image.  The effect is less apparent on the hair and face, perhaps due to you spending more time and effort on those features?  I dunno.

That's amazing, it's also exactly the skintone I thought of when I first saw the image. I really love how you did the dreads and the book. The only criticism I can think of is that the fact that both his shirt and eyes are green detracts from what would otherwise be very striking green eyes. If that made sense.

Est: Thank you very much, I'm a traditional inker usually, normally what I do is I do pencils, inks, erase, scan, adjust contrast, erase any mistakes, thin out lines, etc. However I've been trying to improve my digital inking because I don't always have a scanner readily available and ink is expensive. If looks traced it kinda is(bear with me), I start out with red 'block people', then I do rough lines, then I do rough details, and THEN I do the final layer. My digital inking is still a tad shakey, but man I've come a long way on it. Also, the effect is probably less apparent because they are smaller details, it's easier to do them lightly and have the linework consistent, I usually have to press a bit harder to make the lines lengthen out. ESPECIALLY if they're straightish.

Social bacon: Thank you as well. Green really is my favorite colour so I tend to use it a lot, however the 'detraction' was intentional, orginally his shirt was blue and it made his eyes a bit too striking when I wanted them to be softer, however I still wanted green eyes.

That leg is long and looks a bit awkward as well.
