For Low, start with The Great Destroyer.  It's pretty enjoyable.

The Great Destroyer is pretty good and everything, but I don't really think it is representative of the reason Low is so amazing.

I would start with the stuff they released on Kranky. Secret Name, Things We Lost in the Fire, and Trust are all pretty much perfect albums from start to finish. The Christmas EP is really good too! Maybe you should start there to get in the holiday spirit.

I guess my opinion on Low is kind of skewed since I have both The Great Destroyer and Trust, but I haven't listened to Trust since I can't get through the first song.  It's so boring.  I agree that it is not representative of their sound, but damn if "When I Go Deaf" isn't one of the best songs ever.

Secret Name and Trust are especially wonderful, I would go so far as to say everything they did before Drums and Guns was fantastic.  Drums and Guns was just pretty good.  Plus the Christmas EP, their B-sides collection (A Lifetime of Temporary Relief), and their song with Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

I would rather say: start where they started. I still like I Could Live in Hope best, but the later ones have been growing on me. As to why you should start listening to them: because they make really beautiful music. No band has ever risen from zero to near the top of my personal charts faster!

Imapiratearg: wtf, I think (That's How You Sing) Amazing Grace is one of their finest songs ever!

Yeah, "When I Go Deaf" is a great song. I love "(That's How You Sing) Amazing Grace" but I can see why people would think it's boring. That's probably because all my friends tell me on a regular basis that I listen to boring music. I am okay with that. You really should listen to the rest of Trust. It has some of my favourite songs. I think you would like "Canada". It kind of sounds more similar to stuff from The Great Destroyer. Also, "Snowstorm", "John Prine", and "Little Argument With Myself" back to back to back is just amazing.

I can't really get into The Great Destroyer as much because the songs seem so crowded. The production seems almost intrusive. Low's song always seemed to have so much space. I think their songs need the room to navigate that space instead of being cramped.

So how 'bout those Boredoms, guys?

That's like my second favorite Low song

Anyway, Low is goodness. I second Michael's recommendation of the Kranky stuff, because they really are perfect. I guess they put out a new Christmas single earlier this month called "Santa's Coming Over" and I downloaded it but I haven't listened to it yet.

I'm a fan of Boredoms' Soul Discharge but it is the only thing I have by them. They are spazzy and really weird? I dunno they're not a band I've invested much time in.

and "badass" is an adjective that is rarely used to describe Low.

I can see what you mean.  I'm not sure if Steve Albini produced the rest of their albums, but some of the production decisions are intrusive like you said.  The drums sound absolutely awful on some songs, what with the shrill, piercing snare sound, but on others they are bone-crushingly huge.

The only Boredoms album I own is Vision Creation Newsun, but I would recommend it.

As for Low, I've always enjoyed Things We Lost in the Fire

By far the most accessible (and arguably best) Boredoms album is Super AR.  Get it NOW.  It rocks.

For Low, I'd get Christmas and Songs For a Dead Pilot.  Also, owL Remix Low is incredibly fun.

I know exactly what you mean. I have trouble bringing myself to move after listening to that album straight through. It's like hitting a reset button on your emotional compass, but instead it's a slow and deliberate process of obliterating it and then remaking it like a blank slate.

That album is so sad and spacious, it is amazing. And Do You Know How to Waltz is definitely my favorite low track. Never heard of the Boredoms before though. What do they sound like?

This x 2.  I kept yelling it as a request when they asked what we wanted to hear and they never played it.   :x

The Boredoms sound like very noisy psychedelic rock, depending on the album there is more "noise" than "rock".  The album I recommended up there is their most "rock" album.  I guess you could compare them to Acid Mothers Temple.

I highly recommend Super Ae (or Ar, spelling differs on who you ask) and Vision Creation Newsun for the Boredoms' newer albums, Pop Tatari and Chocolate Synthesiser for their older "It's just some guy screaming" albums.

Id personally suggest Pop Tatari as a good start for Boredoms.
Its by far my favourite of theirs, none of their other albums are as good.
I don't know enough about Low to suggest anything.

I'd personally recommend Vision Creation Newsun for the Boredoms, but Super AE works well too.

The first album by them I listened to was Soul Discharge 99. I would not recommend starting with this at all if you are not used to "what the shit seriously why am I doing this to myself?"

I listen to a lot of Boredoms.

I have both 'Vision Creation Newsun' and 'Pop Tatari' and the former is the more accessible. If you get into these you most certainly ought to get into Melt Banana. Their album 'Cell scape' is pure Noise rock Brilliance.

I have Super Ae, Vision Creation Newsun, and Soul Discharge and I definitely agree with the people who said Vision Creation Newsun is the best introduction to Boredoms, although I'd recommend all three of the albums I've heard.
