One of the problems the EU has with this whole deal, that while the NATO promise has been made, a lot of the EU is dependant on russian gas/oil deliveries. Diplomats cant risk losing those, cause then basically, the EU kind of collapses in on itself :s

Red Lion,

what kind of response were you expecting from the U.S and EU? This war started Friday and both the US and EU have applied all the political pressure they could on Russia. Are you expecting them to send troops to Georgia to help fight the Russians?

I'm going to be murdered for this but...

Nazi Germany similarities?

Formerly very powerful country, wrecked then recovering.

Attacking a neighbour under the guise of protecting their passport holders (Russian citizens in south Ossetia, Germans in Czechoslovakia), then taking over the whole country?

While Western Europe and the USA do nothing, except call Russia naughty

Of course this could all be too superficial. I'm hoping it all blows all over soon and we can return to our lives of celebrity banality on the news.

I think the Georgian President was hoping to make a bold stand against Russia and was relying on immediate western intervention. I think he overplayed his cards and caused all sorts of suffering to his countrymen over something that could have been avoided.

You're right about that. But Russia had no business acting in the way it did. South Ossetia is part of Georgia under its internationally recognized borders. It illegally gave Russian passports to Georgian citizens in Ossetia so that, if Georgia ever did try to re-take Ossetia, they could do exactly what they did in this situation--claim that their citizens were under attack, thus justifying a no holds-barred invasion.

Hostilities have ceased now, but Russian troops are still in Georgian territory--not just Ossetia. Further, the terms for the ceasefire include allowing Russian soldiers to remain a beefed up presence in Ossetia. There were Russian "peacekeepers" in the enclave before, but not at the level Russia is now demanding. They've effectively annexed South Ossetia.

Here's hoping the Russians stop being fuckbags and stop bombing Tbilisi. I want to see it intact if I ever visit.

This was pretty much my second response after the whole "Fuck war, I hope not too many people die etc."

Seriously, Georgia is an overwhelmingly beautiful country (in my opinion, anyways), and I've always wanted to go there. Shame it's mostly been unstable for the whole of my adult life.

I am going to admit that although I read the newspaper everyday and consider myself generally up to date with global issues, the only reason i found out about the conflict in georgia was watching the Olympics mens beach volleyball event with friends on a big screen in a bar and going 'who the fuck is GEO???.... I've never seen that flag before!' Hence my mobile phone was pulled out and a mixture of google and wikipedia bought me up to speed..... please don't judge me

Funny how Russia's like "Sup, we're doing the Catholic thing and pulling out" (GEDDIT? GEDDIT?!) but they just pushed like 60 tanks into Gori.

Lying sonsabitches, that Medvedev and that Putin. Filthy lying sonsabitches.

An eyewitness claims to see Russian tanks heading towards Tbilissi. Russia denies they're heading there

"Gozer the Gozarian, as a duly appointed Represenative of the City, County and State of New York, I am here to ask you to cease and desist all supernatural activities and return to you place of origin, or nearest, comroftable parallel dimension."

Oops... Wrong thread...

I love the fact that Russia has twice declared a "ceasefire" but has continued on anyways.  Also, the UN and NATO threatening Russia?  Classically funny.  Puh-lease, NATO and the UN have no power.  The only way to resolve this situation quickly and effectively is to assasinat Putin, and put in an actor pretending to be Putin, while in fact really being an American citizen. All else fails, we let Rusia have Georgia, then I can make fun of my family that live in Georgia, the State...

I don't know if I'd discount all of what NATO says as weightless crap (remember: Serbian no-fly-zone campaign, KFOR), but I'd definitely laugh at anything the UN says. They can spout on all they want about ethics and morals and "omg fuk u rusia ur idiots", but at the end of the day, they're still the ones who sent a peacekeeping force to Rwanda that did absolutely nothing to stop the bloodshed.

Even though the U.S. and other NATO member states are tied up in the middle east, I'm sure there's still plenty of gumption left in that jalopy to get the job done and the message sent. It remains for them to get up and do it, though, and THAT is the thing I don't have much faith in NATO to do right now.

A lot of the eastern European countries in NATO and the EU, as well as, to a lesser degree, Britain and France, are advocating a tougher line against Russia, but Germany and Italy are refusing to go along.

This isn't the first time either. Why the hell is Germany being so cuddly with Russia?

Yeah, a lot of Eastern and Western Germans kind of miss the Wall. They were separate cultures for so long that they can't stand each other now.

That is kind of a problem, yes. The Ossis are all bummed out because they're unemployed now and the Wessis are pissed off because they are "giving too much money to those ex-commie-bastards".
