man killed at olympics
« on: 09 Aug 2008, 19:49 »

I couldn't find the article, but I guess two American civilians were killed by a man who later committed suicide by jumping off a bridge. Any thoughts on this?

Do you mean this. Quite frankly it is sad but I personally couldn't care less.

Well the fact that some guy was killed isn't significant, but there was some relationship to the volleyball coach and the murderer committed suicide. It just seems like foul play to me, whether on some silly athletic level or on a more political one I dunno.

Also, found the link

*Fixed the title of thread, one man was killed and one severely injured

Because there isn't a "Crime" or "Sports" forum?

Whenever I see someone ask that question in a thread I haven't seen before, I tend to assume the thread used to be in the comic section of the forum and a mod just moved it.

and many luls were had.

but seriously, the chinese are very wary of outsiders. I'm not at all surprised there was an event like this. I remember reading a story by a white chinese national who was attending a festival with his half-chinese daughter, and there was a group of people yelling 'get out foreigner, we don't want you here this is our festival'

i mean this same kinda shit happens everywhere and people just love to cut loose and fuck up someone's day at the olympics. I wonder if we could get it internationally recognised as a psychological ailment.

Maybe, but that article Vendetagainst linked says, "The BBC's Quentin Sommerville says murders, especially targeting foreigners, are very rare in China."

Yeah, seriously.  If we could 51 / 50 for xenophobia, half the world would be locked up in mental hospitals (and the rest of us would be probably be happier for it).  Interestingly, though Googling "tourist murdered" comes up with a lot of articles discussing this recent event, there are a lot of results for other places, too: Israeli tourist murdered, Canadian tourist murdered, Scottish tourist murdered, British tourist murdered, etc.  I'm a little bit afraid that people are going to hear this and pull that reactionary "those crazy Chinese" bullshit... but the truth is, irrational, murderous fear of outsiders is an international human problem.  A terrifying human problem.

They must be doing a pretty good job of hushing it up - I didn't even know the Olympics were held every year now!

LESS YAPPY MORE SPORTSPEOPLE BEATING THE SHIT OUT OF PEOPLE

(go thirty seconds in)

I like how the first punch was a sneaky one that looked like he might have been just spinning around quick, then he goes for an elbow and that don't work, so he's like "fuck it" and punches him proper-like.

Yeah watching some vids Barry Hall is a macho macho man.  Like the new Vinnie Jones, in that he's one of those former commonwealth athletes that plays a sport mostly no one in north america cares about.

@Anyways: Yeah that was pretty pathetic how he ran in and just knocked himself down. People like that should be disqualified from physical contact on account of endangering themselves.
