I recently discovered the band Bande do Role (insert accents where appropriate), and decided to use last.fm to find other bands with a similar sound. I didn't really succeed, but I discovered that, for some reason, everything I heard on last.fm tagged with "Brazilian"--and, usually, also "indie"--was absolutely bloody fantastic. So, a heads up to those of you who're looking for new music: check out Brazilian artists

Em, CSS I guess? They have a fairly similar sound - less 'DIY-ey' or abrasive, but similar booty-shaking amazingness. Although I don't think I'm a fan of the new stuff. And then I guess you could check out baile-funk stuff, I've heard some good bits and pieces in there.

Yes, that's what I've been doing... Bonde do Rolę is the best I've found so far, in that genre I had no idea CSS had older stuff, should prolly give that a try. This stuff makes for great party music--great beats an tunes, and few people recognise it =)

There aren't really any other bands that sound like Bonde De Role. That's kind of what makes them special.

The style they're most influenced by is called baile funk (or favela funk, Carioca funk), its sort of like Brazil's indigenous equivalent to hip-hop. Like a lot of dance music, it's deep and little confusing with lots of singles and remixes and relatively little in the way of proper albums. Most of it isn't as scuzzy sounding as Bonde De Role, if that's something you dig.

Have you checked out M.I.A. or Spank Rock yet? They've both got the same kind of mashing style, mixing 8-bit, baile funk and b-more club. If not, you should definitely do.

Brazillians are making more good trashy hipster style electro than France at the moment but for some reason DJ's around here are just not bothering with it at all.

well most of the electro funk that you are listening (if I am not wrong), is basicaly composed by people who loves rock and started an electro rock/funk band just for the sake of the joke, cause here rocker hate funk, and funkers hate rock, so the mix of both started as a joke around here, and if you translate some of the lyrics, you will still find some of  the stupid things being said.

but I have to agree, the production is very nice, and the musics are really good for parties, and the lyrics give me good laughs usualy.

I think the hesitance of DJs to spin this shit at clubs around here is mostly that this is fucking pure unabashed party music. You could play it during a sunday session kind of day, but people around here usually go for more "serious" dance music when they are out because tech-house is fucking important. This stuff just calls down to your arse and then relays the message to the brain that it won't be coming in for work today because it has been infected with boogie fever.

Really, if I remembered the name of most of these bands in 10 years I'd be surprised but shit it is just butt shaking music.

Chico Science & Nacao Zumbi. <3

Born amidst the rich cultural tradition of Northeast, Chico Science began to experiment with afro bloco (Carnival group) Lamento Negro's Gilmar, blending maracatu with reggae, funk, rap, and rock. The mixture of regional rhythms with world pop music, played by guitar, bass, samplers, and other tech gadgets, was named by him as "mangue" (a reference to the mud flats of Recife). With the later addition by the press of the word "beat", it remained an umbrella denomination to the pop adaptations suffered by ancient folkloric Northeastern musics.

Mangue is the place where they "fish" crabs that is a way to earn money, it´s a kind of swamp if I am not wrong.
Mangue Beat is what they call the music made from that region, and with the mix of the maracatú.
