Everything looks so expensive. How can he afford all this stuff?

You mean the toys?

Everything. The websites, the videos, the costumes. They all look seriously expensive.

uH... well he's a successful musician! lol of course it looks expensive.  Doubtless he spent a lot of money to look that sharp, well put-together and organized.  LOL that's like saying wow, did you see that Beatles concert?  It all looked so expensive.  That's the point!   It makes the fans happy to see their beloved leader looking super-spiffy!  It makes us go all drooly.  seriously.

..

I sw00n for Dr. Steel.  His voice makes me weak... he could read me bedtime stories any day.

And he's so fantastically polite in his emails.

Yah - he answers fan emails even!  FTW!  He's the most fantastic musician ever!

of course, he may have knocked over a few banks after he split the sanitarium, also.  That.. that might explain the 'expensiveness'...

Yes, they do seem a tad overzealous, don't they?

One might even say slightly silly.

Silly is encouraged.

Fun is mandatory.

Happy will emerge.

There ya go.  of course it's silly.  He's a mad scientists bent on world domination ... and he sings and makes robots and toys for kids, and burns down toy factories where he got fired and escapes from the sanitarium, I mean what about this screams "serious" to anyone?!

But it's fun!  That's the important part.   :-)

Dresden Dolls are fantastic.  Anything that is likened to them must be equally fantastic.

It's gotta be a rule somewhere.

If not, it is now.

Rule 68.  Anything 'like' the Dresden Dolls must be as equally fantastic.

You can't make up rules like that and anything that encourages a cult (in the literal sense) following is kinda creepy or gay. That said, the Dreden Dolls aren't bad.

I can so make up rules like that.  :-P

 :|

And anyway, IT'S NOT A CULT FOR FUCK-SAKE!  IT'S JUST ABOUT HAVING FUN!  No one is going to be drinking Kool-Aid or waiting for the UFO gods to come and take us away, nor will we be barricading ourselves inside a compound with megaphones to talk to the FBI.

WE JUST LIKE HIS MUSIC.  And we think everyone else should have a chance to like it, too.

I think of Dr.Steel as a cooler steampunk version of the Aquabats (Not the music, but the following). So instead of Aquacadets, you got.... ah, steampunks.

So you got the same fanatical following, just... a little less obnoxious.

And I certainly wouldn't call it a cult.

No.  They do awful covers of Neutral Milk Hotel songs.

Also, the Aquabats are way cooler than this guy, because they don't really take themselves seriously.

Yes, some people take themselves way too seriously.

Most of us are just finding an awesome excuse to have fun and giggle like crazy over a 'job well done'.

If you think we somehow "take ourselves seriously" then you are sorely mistaken.

Look at my face.. is this a 'serious' face?

Kai, stop taking drugs.

You know, I'm not a huge fan of the Dresden Dolls, though I like 'em now and then, but why is a poor video-cam recording of a band having fun covering a song they like reason to condemn them?

Newsflash: Jeff Mangum can't sing anyway.

I like it.

He totally stole my idea though - my nickname is "Professor Funk Thompson" due to an ill-fated halloween costume, and I was going to start a 12 piece funk / jam / psychedelic group and dress up like a mad scientist and play the accordion with 2 female back-up vocalists dressed as either nurses or hot lab assistants :(

The music is not good in the sense that there are no really talented musicians, and a lot sounds a bit the same.

But it is fun music, a couple songs I really dug, and the whole steampunk shtick is neat to me.

You're right, it's no good reason to condemn them.  They played the song fine enough, I suppose.  I think it was the fact that they tried being all dramatic and serious about it and it came off as both pretentious and ridiculous and that's why I thought it was awful.

And honestly? He's having fun with it. Good for him!
