I was going through the levels at a pretty good clip by making contraptions with as few parts as I could manage, but now I've been inspired by some of the really creative examples people have uploaded to the site. Great game.

I am finding it really difficult.

Me too. It's frustrating to finish a level in my own inept, half-assed way and then see all these really intricate designs other people made for it. "Now why couldn't I think like that?"

I'm on "Up The Stairs" (level 12). If you're having trouble, try using the move object tool to reposition the pink block. It gives a lot of flexibility, especially if you're making a swing or catapault. I didn't realize you could do that 'till I level 11 (Mission to Mars), which had me stumped 'till I repositioned. Now that I do know though I've been going back to earlier levels and making crazy stuff.

You can move it or just get the block there before the ball does.

Just so you know, you don't have to do the levels in order.  I think the one I've had the most fun with is "Four Balls."

I made an essentially stationary tank tread (with little "baskets") to drag them across the gap.  Thinking about a water wheel is what gave me the idea.

Looking at other people's ideas really helped me start thinking outside the box.  And it also showed that, in some cases, there really is only one solution (level unpossible).

Unpossible has quite a few solutions... did you see the guy that built a catapult that had speed brakes on it?   Me and a friend ended up doing something similar to a lot of them, which is namely building a tank on a chain.

Also, on tube, the guy that built the endless machine (something with weights)

heres two I'm happy with:

I tended to switch between giant catapaults and giant 20-wheeled bulldozer-locomotive-tanks where appropriate.

i'm pretty much in the same boat, Roxie.
although i was pretty proud of the contraption i used to beat 'avalanche' or whatever it's called, with all the balls that roll down at you. anyway, i made a super-flexible caterpillar-like tank thing that had a spinning flipper on the front so it would throw the balls up and back and any that it couldn't throw, it would just climb over the top of.

Yeah, the common solution for that one seems to be essentially a tank with some sort of "digger" on the front of it.  Me and a friend came up with one that has a "tank tread" on the front so it would dig them out and dump them off the back before getting to the last five or so that it was strong enough to just push.
Edit: My digger :  http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=579477
and a brute force one:  http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=581098

Now I want to try and make one that "eats" the balls on the hill (and proceeds to push them out the back)

Something Ive figured out:

If you want more forward push, dont just put more wheels touching the ground, you can add torque to the motors by chaining them together (how people make strong catapults).  Basically just have a string of motors all connected at the same points (top+bottom or left+right) to each other.  You can also help increase ground friction (by putting cross bars connecting two wheels/motors)

I am stuck on Mission to Mars.

I made a rather lovely and simple trebouchet-like contraption for that one which I was quite proud of.

That's the most recent level I've completed.

Mission to Mars - ever play whip as a kid?  The kids all hold hands and then start moving, the last one usually ends up having to run really fast to keep up with what's going on.

I've watched it, but I still don't understand why that thing exploded.

It's a problem inherent in flash.  Flash is pretty weak when it comes to doing a large quantity of complicated mathematical equations.  I'm not even sure how they optimised it for this game.  I've seen quite a few exploding contraptions poking around in the player built solutions, and I've made a few myself.  The nearest thing I can tell, after making a few is that it has something to do with how the program handles unbalanced torque.  It basically stops being able to figure out what the fuck is supposed to happen, and goes bat shit nuts.  (ie: if you are causing torque in different directions at once)

Whats stupid is that, even after having beaten every single free map, I find myself going back and setting myself new challenges to accomplish on them; such as the brute force machine on "Awash" or the one where I wanted to land the marker in the goal without it leaving in "Down Under."
I keep taking breaks from playing the Warhammer beta to play this...

Also, people (no one here that I am aware of) need to stop publishing every god damn thing they make.  Hence, the user created solutions are crap flooded with 500 of basically the same fucking machine, and it's harder to find ones that are actually somewhat interesting.
