Author Topic: Bands you've discovered because of game soundtracks  (Read 16458 times)

I'll start: Deluka.  Ever since I heard their single "Sleep is Impossible" on GTAIV, I've been infatuated with them.  In fact, they released a Japan-only record (it may even be their debut), and I had to get it.  Defintiely worth the 2,400 yen.

Edit:  Not sure if this belongs in this thread or the music one, but whatever.

Theory of a Deadman. They were featured on the Indigo Prophecy / Fahrenheit soundtrack and I love them, even if they are pretty much Nickelback with a slightly less annoying singer.

San Andreas made me dig up all my old Stone Temple Pilots stuff as well, but there's not really been many bands I've discovered solely from game soundtrack contributions. Quake made me look into Nine Inch Nails, which I've never ever looked back from.

Megadeth and Graveyard BBQ from GH1, Danzig from GH2. Can't think of anything else, most of what I have found has been "Hmm, I like this band, what else is like them?"

Yes! I bought the Hours album just because of that game. Also yeah the Guitar Hero / Rock Band soundtracks have generally introduced me to a lot of tracks I wouldn't have otherwise heard, particularly the bonus stuff, though it's never really inspired me to check out the actual band themselves.

What that guy said^.

Also, Omicron (or is it really Omikron?) was awesome.  Best intro song to a game ever.  And the gameplay weren't too bad neither.

Shit. I was so focused on such a small amount of music that GH actually really opened me up to a lot of bands...Rob Zombie, Queens of the Stone Age, Pantera, Dragonforce...of course, by the third one, I pretty much either knew or hated all the songs on that.  Then Radio X had a decent selection I liked...weird! I heard "Running Down a Dream" by Petty for the first time on GTA:SA and it just came on!

Koji Kondo, I love you.

Oh, man, looking up things on-line, I found Jim Cook, who does Metal Zelda. I'd recommend it if you like metal or the Zelda series.

Well not necessarily a band, whoever does the sound tracks for Half Life 2 does some good stuff.

Well, for starters, if you buy Audiosurf on Steam, it comes with the Orange Box soundtrack.

Edit:  Also, they tend to have new music on the radio every few days or so (music, rather than soundtracks).

Audiosurf is 100% excellent, even if I pretty much treat it as the most badass visualizer ever.  If you have more than a couple mp3s to rub together it's worth every penny.

I got interested in Iggy Pop and The Stooges because "Search and Destroy" was on Guitar Hero II.  Other than that, I listened to a lot of the bands on the Burnout games when I was into crappy music.

I now listen to Buckethead and and Queens of the Stone Age thanks to the Guitar Hero series. I tried listening to Muse and Dragonforce also thanks to Guitar Hero and Rock Band, but didn't really enjoy them that much. I liked Jesper Kyd after playing MDK 2. A combination of playing Rock Band and reading this forum and the QC Music Blog got me interested in The New Pornographers.

So yeah, games made me like new music :D

There were songs from The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and David Bowie on Driver - Parallel Lines that I liked - despite not liking most of the stuff from both that I have previously heard.

also, a bit of a lol from me at all y'all who said they like songs from Guitar Hero. Although on a related note, when I first watched the "guitar queer-o" episode of Southpark when Stan's dad starting playing Carry On my Wayward Son, I totally wanted to learn how to play the song on a(n) (actual) guitar. That song is so awesomely fun to play btw - there's like 5 mini solos throughout the song.  :-o 8-)

Tony Hawk's Underground.  That was from one of his best albums, too.  Come to think of it, that's also where I found Busdriver.  Nobody else, though, that I didn't already listen to.

Man. GTA: Vice City was the first game that got me into rock music. Before that, I listened to--no joke--showtunes, mostly. But then I heard "Bark at the Moon" on one of the radio stations in the game and became sadly convinced that Ozzy Osbourne was the coolest shit in the word. So I started listening to him, then got further in rock, into Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The Who, etc, and only listened to classic rock for awhile. Then I got into Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan which turned me onto folk, and I also got into blues and jazz, then started listening to some alternative music and indie, and nowadays I don't listen to things like Ozzy Osbourne at all anymore. I have had a strange musical journey.

My brother downloads every song on Rock Band in iTunes. And now he has it all on a playlist on his iPod. Bah.

Hmm… Not really a game soundtrack but I started listening to more Smashing Pumpkins because of their role in the Watchmen trailer. And GH & RB have revived my love of classic rock(The Who, Bowie, Springsteen[not really]). And my love of singing loudly while taking my daily walk with my dad.

Mostly, I lift my music off of Jack FM, or if it is in a movie or something. I like instrumentals from games, Marty O'Donnell and the such, but, really, not many games have enlightened my music appetite.

Sadly, most of the songs in the GH series, and RB were unfamiliar to me. So, I could probably say almost all the bands in those games I discovered through the game alone.

Well, in one case it was just a song of a band I didn't really know, but the other was a full fledge love of a band.

1.) Paint it Black by the Rolling Stones on Twisted Metal: Black
 ~awesome game, awesome theme song
~oh, and I loved the soundtracks of all the other twisted metal games as well (especially the tracks that the characters speak, SO funny)... so I suppose I fell in love with Rob Zombie's work because of that game as well... I remember watching the Matrix when I was 11 saying during the club scene... "Oh, oh! That song is on twisted metal!!" Good times.

2.) Freezepop ala GH I and II
~Heard Get Ready 2 Rokk on the first game, thought it was pretty sweet.  Then heard Less Talk More Rokk on the second and basically said, "Ok, that's it, time to find out more about them... which lead me to Stake-out, Science Genius Girl, and Parlez vous Freezepop. Oh yeah...

Bands I've discovered (most I don't follow up with searches except for a few of the choice ones):

Starsailor (MGS3)
Poets of the Fall (Max Payne 2)
Jimmy Eat World (NHL03 lol)
Queens of the Stone Age (NFS Underground 2)
Avenged Sevenfold (NHL08)

I've discovered a lot of random Japanese crap too but I can't be stuffed putting that up.

not shure if this fits but I was playing arcade classics on GameCube and heard "Joystick by Des Band" and i'm like heh thats a cool tune and shure enough someone in my chatroom had it so i grabbed it off them. Also there was that commerical for the iPod that featured "Music is my hot hot sex" by Cansei de Ser Sexi, i searched and found its commonly shortened to CSS. I then looked them up on youtube and was so pleased by some of their other stuff i immedeatly went to HMV and picked up the CD.

My first real exposure to metal was the wonderful mix of the Metallica song "One" and  Starcraft-sounds. I still think it's better than the original.

It's even out on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqFpnrItUdk

As an update, Freezepop are a lot of fun! I never played the track that was on GH2 but Brainpower and Sprode on Rock Band got me intrigued, so there I am with that. Waiting until after the Xmas spending is all done to pick up their albums fo' realz.

I'm also into Coheed & Cambria in a big way now, first heard of them through 'Welcome Home' on Rock Band, but it was more the insistence of a friend that got me to check them out rather than the game itself. It says a lot that I prefer their more emo-esque root stuff than the prog rock style the most recent albums are going for, but meh.
