« on: 13 Sep 2007, 14:17 »

Anyone else here as exted as I am to see the Metalocalypse unfold? Any thoughts? Look back on the first season with joy?

I am also exited about the Dethalbum :)

I think that the pilot of Metalocalypse was some of the funniest 11 minutes of television I've ever seen. The rest of season 1 had moments of brilliance but other times when it just sort of fell flat for me. Regardless, I will definitely be watching the second season, and I really want to see what musician cameos they pull out of their hats this time. It's gonna be pretty difficult to top King Diamond.

It had its ups and downs. Some episodes had me in stitches, and some made me hate myself for sitting through them.

I'll watch season 2, and I expect pretty similar results.

I tend to think that the episodes that were really funny were worth the few that kinda fell flat. Plus I like the music they made, strangely more than most 'real' metal.

The concept and the way it plays out are actually quite clever.  Apparently the whole show is 75% the work of one guy who is primarily responsible for the plotting and the music.  Even the bad episodes were still worth watching, and thought the Finnish Troll episode, the season ender with the commercial in the Arctic, and the one where the public is allowed into the mansion and two website managers hold a new release hostage were all pretty great.  Very much looking forward to Season 2.

Yeah most of the work is by Brendan Small. He also has a show on Adult Swim called Home Movies, I am not sure, but it seems semi biographical.

Home Movies was once on ABC or Fox, way back when.  It's a pretty funny show, but the early episodes in "squigglevision" give me headaches.

Dethalbum!  The previews are up on Amazon, and it's sad that I'm more excited about it than pretty much any album that had a planned release this year.

the dethalbum may have leaked, i may have heard it.

a lot of changes were made to a lot of the songs, but the result is so good. several songs I didn't care for are now my favorites (murmaider, birthday dethday.) the new songs are pretty good as well, especially fond of the lost vikings.

and oh my god pickles' vocal part in hatredcopter. can't get it out of my head.

Episode 1 of S2 was awesome. Possibly not as awesome as some of the season 1 stuff but wicked none the less.

If someone could upload the Dethalbum for the sendspace thread I would be eternally greatful.

The Dethalbum is the business. Doesn't look like anyone's upped it, but I'll put up a link on the Sendspace thread for you.

Oh, if there's some sort of policy against stealing links from upload blogs etc. I'm going to say you hacked my PC and/or threatened to beat me up if I didn't post it.

Dethalbum has sold out at every music store I have gone to so far.  The last one compared it to Kanye's and 50 cent's new albums in the amount of demands that they have been getting.

I'm listening to Dethalbum as I type this and... damn.  I don't consider myself to be a huge fan of metal, but this stuff is way better than it has any right to be.  Also, best choice of opening track ever.

WE CALL OUT TO THE BEASTS OF THE SEA TO COME FORTH AND JOIN US
THIS NIGHT IS YOURS!
FOR, ONE DAY, WE WILL ALL BE WITH YOU IN THE BLACKENED DEEP
ONE DAY, WE WILL ALL GO INTO THE WATER...

GO! INTO! THE WAAATER!
LIVE THERE! DIE THERE!
LIVE THERE! DIE!

WE REJECT OUR EARTHLY FIRES
GONE ARE DAYS OF LAND EMPIRES
LUNGS TRANSFORM TO TAKE IN WATER
CLOAKED IN SCALES WE SWIM AND SWIM AND SWIM

*SOLO*

A few ommissions I'm sad about. I could have done with some non-Dethklok material on the bonus disc (I'm Just a Rock 'n Roll Clown, Happy Metal World Rainbow, Crush My Battle Opponents Balls, Underwater Friends) though the new songs, particularly The Lost Vikings, do kinda make up for that.

The thing that scares me is that some of them aren't even really joke songs in the scheme of things. Go Into The Water, Awaken Mustakrakish and Castratikron particularly. This kind of stuff could never have been pulled off by someone who didn't really like their metal.

I have an anecdote. Bear with me.
A little while ago, I was doing vocals in a black metal parody band called 'The Spire of Inversion' (named for one of the 101 rules of black metal). We didn't last very long, but I wrote lyrics about all the various BM cliches - demons, worshipping Satanic monoliths, etc. etc.
None of them were very good, but my epic was going to be about being sodomised by Satan on God's throne in Heaven, which is an idea I'm proud of.
The reason why I mention it is because no matter how preposterous my concepts were, Scandanavians of various sorts had been there before me. And they meant it. Let's not forget that Varg's first band was named after Tolkein's Orcs.

That's the peculiar genius of Brandon Small. His songs don't seem like jokes, because bands that had come before him have done things that are far, far more idiotic (I'm looking at you, Cannibal Corpse). But then you realise that he's singing about mutating into mermen and overthrowing the land-folk, or summoning monsters in order to gather testicles for some evil ritual. Or something.
If people didn't know it was a joke, they'd probably take it seriously. And, that, my friends, is satire.

There are a plethora of jokes that end being taken seriously enough to form cultures and fanbases of their own.  Like Air Guitar.  Or The Colbert Report.  There are also plenty of instances of satire where the satirical piece has more to offer musically that what it satirizes.  Like the Alanis Morissette cover of My Humps.

Let's not forget that Varg's first band was named after Tolkein's Orcs.

Varg named himself after an Orc, and the word 'Burzum' comes from the inscription on the one ring. The weird thing is that Varg doesn't even like Tolkien as such. He has this really wierd racist reading of LotR where the orcs are supposed to represent the pagan vikings*, and that's why he's associated him so much with Sauron and so forth.

Also, I know the rule you're referring to, and I'm pretty sure it's 'Clouded Frost Spire', as in 'Sticking My Clouded Frost Spire Into Her Gates of Attrition'.

I was never that huge into metal. I liked a few artists, but many of my friends are huge metal heads. I felt it my duty to get the hooked on Metalocalypse and Dethklok. Also, for not really being into metal that much I really like Brendan's songs. I wonder if I like it more simply because of the show...

Not only is Brendan Small good at satire, he writes catchy tunes constantly.  It's like something embedded in his DNA to make the bounciest music possible.  Even Dethklok was catchy.  It was metal, but it most definitely showed off Small affinity for pop and melody.

Wait, you mean Udnerwater friends isn't on the Dethalbum?

I barely even want to buy this album anymore.

Also I really like Season 2 so far. I get the feeling they're moving more into arcing episodes with small reveals in each standalone episode that culminates in the season finale, which I really like, and the writing quality so far is definately better than the weaker episodes from season 1, hopefully they can keep it at this level pretty consistantly.

Chinese food is neither brutal nor frugal.  Chinese food just kills your stomach lining, while temporarily filling you up.  It's very deceptive.

I know this is a bit of a necropost, but HOLY SHIT episode 9 was awesome.  Dethklok goes on an Amazonian expedition.  Those six words say a lot.  It was probably on par with the last episode of Season 1 in terms of amount of ridiculous awesomeness in an episode.
