Castle Crashers!
« on: 27 Aug 2008, 02:56 »

So, Castle Crashers went up at about 1 AM Pacific Time this morning. I just spent about an hour and a half playing co-op with some dudes from SA, and it's a lot of fun. It's a side-scrolling brawler in the vein of Double Dragon, or more accurately the old Capcom beat-em-ups from the early 1990s, with some light RPG elements (you level up and can put stat points into 4 different categories) and collectible weapons and animal helpers. The art style is awesome and the gameplay is simple but still has nice depth in terms of combos and magic attacks and all that. There are also mild competitive elements, because you are always grabbing gold and items from fallen enemies before your teammates can get them first, and at the end of certain boss fights you fight against each other to win the captive princess. It's also made by a tiny independent company (I think the developer employs all of 6 people), and it's selling for 15 dollars, which is more than every other Live Arcade game except Puzzle Quest, Braid, and the Penny Arcade game. However, after less than 2 hours I feel comfortable saying that it's worth it. It looks great, plays great, and I didn't see a hint of lag during the entire time I played co-op (although I didn't know where the other guys were geographically).

If enough people here buy it we should definitely get a QC game going, that would be pretty rad. I'm definitely going to be playing in the morning after I wake up, probably until I have to go to work.

I may have to check this game out, hadn't heard of it before.  I loved DD and the old Capcom brawlers though, so it sounds promising.

This is the first XBLA game I've actually considered getting, seems like it'd be a damn nice little break-away from all of the high end graphics and massive RPG sagas that I've been playing for the entire summer.

Really? Man, I have over 20 XBLA games at this point, and I only really think I regret buying a couple of them. I think it's a great service.

I just got it! me and my brother played through some of the earlier stages tonight, and I agree it brings back a lot of memories of Golden Axe, only you level up, have unlockable weapons and pets, and overall its a really good game! Not to mention the art style and the humor it brings just pretty much had us laughing the entire time we were playing it (the forest level and the poop jokes, juvenile but funny). But now I have 800 microsoft points to spend elsewhere... Fatal fury maybe...

The game has a ridiculous amount of homage in it. Everything from Godlen Axe to Battletoads to D&D. There's even a pretty great Terminator scene in it.

I do have to say though that the thing that made me love the game the first time was seeing the owl shit itself to death.

I am at work and then immediately going to get my face rocked off, so I won't be home until super fucking late. I'm up for a QC game on any day from Tuesday to Friday, though.

It is, but I'll tell you anyway its Wickedfall ; but I won't be on until well after 9pm here, eastern time. Also, would we be starting from the beginning or going with our characters? I've got ice and plain at level five, I believe poison and lightning are level 1, and my fire guy is level 16 or something. That's all I've unlocked so far. Me and my brothers just got to the alien mothership basically.

I've only got the demo, but I'm already horribly addicted. The Behemoth makes great games. I think I'll be buying this game soon...

I already finished the game with my Orange Knight, so I'm probably going to use the character I unlocked by beating the game with him (the little red dragon guys from the volcano). He's only level 5 right now, but I may level him up a bit during the day so I'm not lagging behind you guys.

This game is one of the most consistently fun games I've played in a long, long time. It doesn't have fancy pants graphics that melt your eyes or gameplay so deep you can drown in it, but it *is* super fun, enen just with single player. (I am a friendless person without friends so I'm not sure what the multiplayer is like, but I'm sure it's brilliant.)

Single player is okay, but I think this game truly shines in multiplayer.

Thoughts/Discuss on the elements and magics of the other units?

Personal favorite - White knight w/ focus on agility and magic, reduced defense, no strength. Makes for a very deadly, very quick character. Also works well in parties because such high agility means you can run around and herd enemies.

Secondary favorite would be blue knight though. Ice is pretty great crowd control. Maxed out ice magic makes for 6 icicles of death, which is pretty epic.

All in all, I really like this game.
