The Hollowmen
« on: 28 Aug 2008, 11:05 »

The Hollowmen is I suppose a political satire on the ABC. It's neat in that it's not poking fun at overall politics or any specific politians or parties but more the whole internal process in general. It reminds me a lot of Frontline, and wikipedia tells me it's by the same people. Naturally I stumble on it as the last episode or the season airs (on abc2 as well, so the day after the last episode airs), but it's the first show I've seen where I've been inspired to torrent the whole thing. Aussies can stream the last episode (which stands up well on it's own) from the abc website, else torrents are still quite populated.

I'm really enjoying the writing; it's quick, witty and doesn't really frame it's jokes. Did anyone catch it? What did you think?

Do not despair at having missed it, as there is more to come, season 2 is starting next week.

this is possibly the best bit of Australian television I've seen in a long time, and gives me hope that we are capable of producing something better than Kath and Kim or We Can Be Heroes.

The only problem I have with it is that it's totally hilarious until you realise just how close to the truth it actually is, then it can just become damn depressing.

This show is brilliant, it is far better than anything Chris Lilly has done or will ever do and it is great that Front Line now has a true spiritual successor. Merrick Watts is actually kind of funny when you don't let him think of what he's going to say and the focus group is entertaining and a real big slice of society's stupid pie.
