Yet another reccomendation thread
« on: 10 Sep 2008, 17:27 »

Recently I seem to have hit a wall with music.

I've started listening to bands heavily reccomended on here and elsewhere, but I'm only getting to hear a handful of material at a time.

Music I've recently discovered:

Deerhoof - Apple O', Runners Four (I have reveille and Friend Opportunity, but on first listen I wasn't as impressed as I was with the other two. Should I keep going with them?)

Yo La Tengo - Painful (I have a feeling I started in the wrong place with them, although I do quite like this album)

New Pornographers - Twin Cinema (Love this album but not sure where to go next)

Then also, I've had one or two records that I've been meaning to look into but never really got chance to.

Stuff like Mogwai, and Godspeed!
I mean I'm aware of their stuff and could name the odd track, but don't know where to start with them really.

One last thing.
'Slint' has been thrown around a lot on here, but I know next to nothing about them.
If anyone can point me in the right direction it'd be greatly appreciated.

If theres anything else I should hear, let me know.
I'm extremely open minded, and I have a pretty wide music taste.
Ranging from quite commertical to extremely obscure.

I'm just trying to 'fill in the gaps' really.

If anybody fancies helping me out, I'd really appreciate it. Also, if you need more information on my music taste, just ask.

Thanks in advance.

Deerhoof - You should also like Milk Man. Very nice, relatively tuneful record with vaguely creepy cover art.

Yo La Tengo - It's all pretty good. The firm favourites around here are usually I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One (poppy, upbeat) or Summer Sun (slow, textured). These days I prefer the latter.

New Porn - Get Mass Romantic. It's their masterpiece and they've been slowly drifting downhill since then. Afterwards get Sloan's Between the Bridges.

Slint - there's only really one completely terrific album called Spiderland. Listen to it when you go to bed. Great record, to this day.

Mogwai - Might as well start with Young Team or Rock Action. I don't think they've made a bad record, frankly. Try to find My Father, My King. Love that one.

GY!BE - Personally, I think Yanqui UXO was their crowning achievement but then again, there's no really weak material in the whole discography.

Hope this helps! It's all good stuff anyhow.

Brilliant. Exactly what I was looking for.

Also, I'm looking for some ambiant, post-rock stuff.
Something along the lines of Explosions, Helios, early Broken Soc Scene.

Sirenssound.blogspot.com is your friend (if you're at all into post-rock).

Post-rock has been pretty extensively covered recently, as we have had quite a few threads asking post-rock to be recommended recently. If you can find any of those, they will probably all have good recommendations in them. Though if you are too lazy, I suppose a very excellent crescendo-based post-rock band you should listen to is Mono. They pretty much do the whole post-thing perfectly in their latest album You Are There.

(read: I do not feel like doing this again. And there are like, at least four or five great threads made over the past two to four months probably.)

Also, Dimmukane is correct about sirenssound. That blog is godsend.

Tommy's more or less spot on, but I've got to say that Mass Romantic probably isn't the best New Pornographers record.  Twin Cinema is pretty fantastic.  As for the Yo La Tengo suggestion, Electr-O-Pura is worth checking out as well.

Fully agree about Sloan, though.  Between the Bridges slays.

Nope, that's The Electric Version.

It's either Mass Romantic or Twin Cinema and most days I lean towards the former. "The Laws Have Changed" is the best single they've written to date though.
