A new Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie
« on: 26 May 2009, 10:23 »

Ok, this doesn't seem to have been posted yet, so here goes.

The title of this thread probably got your hopes up, seeing the headline of the story got my hopes up, but then reading this article destroyed all hope I had, in the film, and humanity.

A Buffy movie without Joss? Didn't really work too well the first time, I think I'll pass

I was under the impression that the original movie had minimal involvement from Whedon, that he basically sold them the characters and they changed his script to the point of it being unrecognisable.

The original Buffy movie was based on a script that Whedon wrote.  The original script was closer to the TV show than to what eventually got made.  At the time, Hollywood didn't see a lot of marketability in the idea of a badass, strong female character.  So instead they made a parody of both horror movies and girl movies.  Instead of grrl power, we got... a very mediocre movie.  They brought in script doctors and a director and the end result was a very different Buffy.  It came out back in '92, I believe.  Whedon fans generally pretend the movie never happened.

At first, I, too, was excited by the prospect of a Buffy movie.  Then I, too, saw that it's by the guys who made the original.  Fuck it, ain't gonna see it, not unless Joss gives it a thumbs up.

Well, to be fair, the Kuzuis have had a lot to do with pretty much everything Buffy related (I guess except maybe the comics), so there's a pretty good chance this could be much better than the old movie. Besides the fact that Buffy is now a high-profile franchise, and the kind of thing you don't fuck up unless you want to really upset a lot of the fans. I don't know, are there enough Buffy fans for Hollywood to worry about upsetting them? Or just enough that they hope they'll make a profit no matter what they do?

I think it could be cool. Especially if it's set in the same time-frame as Season eight where there are hundreds of slayers running around. Maybe we can at least get Andrew? Please?

Hey!

Rutger Hauer was brilliant in the first movie.

Not only is it unconnected to Whedon, but also it's not involved with the canon of the TV series at all.

I give it 1 trailer to convince me.

No Whedon, no canon, NONE of the shows cast.

I sincerely hope it never gets made.

If it has no connection to the series they'd be insane to make it. What possible audience could it have? People who always scoffed at Buffy the T.V. series aren't going to turn around and take interest in a movie. A few fans of the show might go to see it out of curiosity, but the vast majority will stay away out of loyalty to the show. If it stinks the few who see it will kill it by word-of-mouth.

Well, to be fair, the Kuzuis have had a lot to do with pretty much everything Buffy related (I guess except maybe the comics), so there's a pretty good chance this could be much better than the old movie.

Check out the wiki entry on "Executive Producer", which is the title the Kuzuis had for Buffy.  Specifically, check out this quote:

Quote
In the production of a television show there may be many executive producers listed. Sometimes it may be a situation not unlike to the one described above for motion pictures: someone with previous involvement with a particular work, a project's financier, or someone in control of the business aspect of production. Sometimes, this title is conferred upon a celebrity or notable creator who has lent their name to a project to boost its prestige or credibility, as a recognition of newly-acquired industry status, or as a perk to the show's main star or creative force.

Bolding mine.  Because the Kuzuis made the movie, they held rights to the Buffy character, and leveraged that to get their executive producer credit.  They've virtually no directing or production or writing credits.  They were script doctors for a time and now they distribute US films in Japan and Japanese films in the US.

This movie will suck.  I doubt I'll ever pay to see it.

Yeah, I was aware they weren't the creative forces behind it or anything, but it's kind of hard to argue that they haven't done good for the show over the years.

That doesn't mean they'll make a good movie. I'm just saying, it's not completely unconnected with the show. Just mostly.

I'll only watch it if Luke Perry is in it again.

And old man Sutherland.

Perhaps a time-traveling vampire will come back and try to kill the slayer, and Xander will be caught up in the same event and reboot the Buffyverse, allowing the slayer to become Captain of the Enterprise even though she doesn't really deserve it.

Oh thank god, I hate watching movies that are more than five years old. Now if only they'd get around to remaking Citizen Kane I could finally see it!

I'm boycotting this movie, its the epitome of Hollywood's lack of creativity and need to take anything that's original and provides good entertainment, and squeeze it dry!
