Hair length

Hello! I'm not exactly a new poster - I signed up here and posted a few time a while back, but it had been so long that I couldn't even remember the login name I was using, so I made a new one.

Anyway, something I've been wondering about for a while now: I've noticed that all of the main female characters have "short" hair, i.e. not one of them has hair that reaches her shoulders (though some of the side characters, like Penelope and the morgue chick have longer hair, but even Penelope always has her hair "up" in a ponytail).

I know plenty of young women in the same general age group as the strip's characters, and among them long (past the shoulders) hair is certainly common enough, even in the majority.

So I've got to wonder, is this simply artistic preference on Jeph's part, or is the "short" hair a characteristic of "indie chicks" (a group I'm not all that familiar with, probably because I'm too old)?

I believe this question was answered in the FAQ or at least in the Ask Jeph thread.
He likes drawing girls with short hair (I think he might have said something about it just being easier).

I think it just makes drawing a lot easier.

Normal people's hair gets gradually longer with time.  Sven's gets shorter.

Okay, well, here's another one that's been puzzling me:

Clearly, none of the characters in this comic has any problem with swearing - they cheerfully use profanity when appropriate. Except when they're talking about their rear ends. Then they all use the word "bottom", where most people would use "butt" or "ass".

What's up with that? Not that I necessarily prefer the more "coarse" language; it's just that the word "bottom" kind of yanks me out of the storyline because it seems rather incongruous given the personalities of the characters. The word wouldn't seem so odd if it was Hannelore saying it, but coming from Dora, Faye, or Marten it just feels out of character.

I can see Faye using bottom. And Hanners. But not any others...

Well, I say bottom...

Anyway, I came here to try to figure out who this Mr. Bianchi guy was, but I guess it's Sven, so that question is answered.

...I like that he finally got a haircut. Evidentally, I'm in a very small minority.

Me, too. I love the new haircut. Then again, I'm a cosmetologist. Or for all of you normal people who don't know the proper word for it, hair stylist.

Either way, whenever I draw, I tend to draw girls with short hair, too. Long hair can be a total bitch to draw and re-create over and over. But shorter hair leaves room for little mistakes and/or laziness.

Same here, I totally didn't know who he was until his name was brought up. Then the sadness came, and I logged into this forum, which I rarely do, because I wanted to post my disappointment. I loved his long hair! The new hair has stupid dangly fringe bits and I don't know how that'll work with his glasses. And if there are to be no more glasses...:(

Oh well. At least I can feel cooler, because that's one less comic character I fancy.
