If worse comes to worst I could house a few people for a night or two. My building is no where as cool as the Sheraton, but I'm close to Things and Stuff. I'm on the south side of the city; most of the Cool Things that people would want to do are probably on the north side, but there's really no problem getting to and fro.

Plus, I'll not be in school during this time, so I'll have lots of free time to kick it.

Matt, I think there are some people that want me to make them brownies. So we might have to invade your place for an afternoon if they hold me to it.

Ruyi - MBA at Loyola University Chicago

Liz - No problem. I have a fully-functioning kitchen, complete with running water, gas stove and (gasp!) a refrigerator. Oh, and I have a Kitchen Ade stand mixer too.

How do you not even have a hand mixer? They're like $20!

But damnit, now I want brownies.

I know, I'm a cheapo. I think my mom is getting me one for Christmas, though, along with a sewing machine- I am so excited. But yeah, I mix everything by hand! There is lots of love and hard work in all my baked goods, and considering the amount I make that is a pretty impressive thing.

My not having a blender has nothing to do with not affording one, and everything to do with a lack of kitchen space. For me to get a blender would be like when little kids in cartoons clean their room by stuffing everything into the closet, only then their mom opens the closet and is drowned in a tidal wave of random junk. I mean, I already have to keep my microwave in the dining room on a rolling cart so that I can wheel it into the kitchen whenever I need it.

That's exciting! I'll be staying at my dad's place if I do indeed make it to this meetup, and his house (ie my old house) is basically right next to Loyola.

We really don't have any deadly animals in the Midwest at all.

We have badgers! No other animal strikes such vicious fear into the hearts of those who dare cross it!

No but seriously, I'm a little behind on this thread but what I'm gathering is that we still really don't have any concrete idea of what we're doing. Is this correct?

Man, it is only October. We don't have to know what we are doing yet.

On that note I would like to request that we go to the Field Museum. Admission is anywhere from $11 to $25 depending on which exhibits you want to see but they have and Egyptian collection and an ancient Americas collection so I would like to go.

Also we need to take Jodie to a zoo.

Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Art Institute. Although I guess several people recently went to that one.

Lincoln Zoo? Maybe a jazz club. The Green Mill? I don't have a good sense of what's famous/good, someone else please advise.

It's not 9 inches thick!

More like 3 inch thick. AND STUFFED FULL OF AWESOME.

The Field Museum has a Natural Disasters and Mythological Creatures exhibit going on that are pretty sweet.

Check out Navy Pier, the Sears Tower, and the Hancock Building.

Buy a CTA 3 or 7 day pass.

Shit is expensive here; plan on at least $10 per meal.

Goose Island is fun. So is Wrigleyville.

I know of two really good independent cafe-style places to eat within walking distance of my house. There's Bridgeport Coffee Company which has really good coffee and sandwiches, and there's Zhou B. Cafe which is an Italian place with an art gallery but it's Chinese owned (thus the name). Zhou B. is very cheap, you can get a (big ol') sandwich and cup of coffee for around six or seven dollars, and it's almost always near-empty. BCH is more expensive and has fewer places to sit, but it also has outdoor seating and free wireless. The two or three guys I see working at Zhou spend most of their time watching Star Trek: The Next Generation, and the people at BCH play a lot of Beatles and a few others.
Both are very good.

As far as deep dish I think Ricobenes or Giordano's is the way to go, but they are a little expensive!

I think all of these look fantastic. I would also like to put forward the suggestion that we go get excellent chinese food in Chinatown, and if you don't want to go with me I will call up old friends from NU and go without you instead. I love Chinatown, and if we are staying on the south side of the city, then it isn't that far on the eL.

It is so GOOD, Objects (can I call you something else?). I don't particularly like thick-crust, but deep-dish isn't hard and shitty like regular thick-crust. It's soft and flaky and stuffed with molten cheesy goodness. The thick coating of tomato sauce is first to strike the taste buds, followed by all the wonderful things buried beneath. Also, sometimes there are tiny little meatballs on it, not that shitty sausage that goes on some pizzas but honest-to-God meatballs!

You have no idea.

Hey man if I drive up we should go to like the Omega Diner and get some of their ridiculous Frog Cake. We can totally spend the rest of the night feeling vaguely ill from the sketchy stale ingredients and all the sugar. Or we could go to Clarke's over on Clark and Sherman by NU and get craaaaazy boysenberry pancakes to ward off hangovers with. Y/N?

You are still in Evanston, right?

But a good deep-dish takes like forty or fifty minutes to cook, so it's either that or you have to call in advance.

Living gives you delicious deep dish pizza, man.

Also, waiting 40 minutes (at least) for a pizza gives you plenty of time to get drinking out of the way.

Yeah, I mean, "I won't kill and eat you if you won't kill and eat me" is typically a ground rule for social groups.

Ok, so I took a peek around the last few pages... some thoughts.

Pizza = Uno or Due on Grand.  Yes, it's in the loop.  If not there, Lincoln Park has Lou Malnati's, and there's a Giordano's EVERYWHERE.

Millennium Park...?

Belmont/Clark neighborhood.  Trendy, but as long as it has The Alley there's uber cool shit to look at and gawk.

Lakeview: see above

Pubs/nightlife:  All over.  I would suggest staying out of Lincoln Park on a weekend but the Lawrence red line stop has this place I go to called the Fat Kat Lounge which is pretty sweet.  Green Mill's usually hard as shit to get into, but a Sunday Night poetry slam might be worth it...?

The riverwalk is now open!

August, I'm sure there'll be a street/neighborhood festival around then.

As far as in the Loop goes, Millennium Park stuff/Navy Pier/Beach volleyball/zoo/random parks/trails all apply.

Oh hell.  Almost forgot, Whirlyball (bumper car lacrosse, basically)!

bumper car lacrosse

This.

Guys. I am so excited. How sad is that, it's almost a year til next July and here I am being all excited about it already. I will be legally adult by then too! (Well, I will be legally adult when I leave this country, but in an odd vortex manner I will morph back into a child when the plane lands.) Hopefully I'll also be financially solvent.

There's this really handy "other thing" I'm going to write as a footnote to my abstract that I can probably explore these issues in. I think I'll call it my "dissertation."
