Oh hey guys travelling from another country this is kind of important.

Quote
The days of filling out a green I-94 piece of paper (commonly thought of as the Visa Waiver form) on a plane for entry into the US are about to end. If you're travelling after 12 Jan '09 you'll need to fill in an online request to enter the States, at least three days before travelling, otherwise you'll be turned away at US immigration.

The form is called the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation form or ESTA for short

The application form is available right now on the ESTA's website. It's completely free, so beware of other sites implying there's a fee to pay.

Even if you're only considering going to the States at some point in the future, it's worth filling in the application before buying tickets...just on the off chance you're rejected and can't get your flight/hotel money back.

Plus the ESTA lasts two years (or until your passport expires), and only takes five mins, so after that you’re covered in case you forget, plus the three day rule could be a problem for emergency travel. When filling in the form you'll see a "flight details" section, but note this doesn't have an asterix, meaning you don't have to fill it in.

Once the ESTA is out of date you need to reapply.

I just thought I should let everyone know because getting this kind of shit out of the way early is a good idea.

Now that I'm sober again, a serious question: Does anyone know hoch much money I'd need to actually do this?

Depends how long you were staying. I am guessing it would cost about $1000US for flight alone. Jury is still out on hotel prices. Add to that food, event, and booze costs and I am guessing that the weekend portion would run you around $300-500

In terms of money, I don't have to pay for accomodation when I go to Boston next week but I've budgeted for US$1,500 spending money at barest minimum. I will probably not be buying that much stuff. It will be a frugal holiday.

I got by really cheaply in Toronto. $125 for transportation, $90 for the hostel, and about $100 for food/shopping/etc. It can be done!

So I am guessing that I need at least 2000-3000 Euros. I have about 1000 Euros right now. I see a problem!

Oh, I have a job. It's just that it helps me live by Mr Micawber's golden rule and not much more.

Thing is: I am planning to move into a new flat in the next few weeks, which means that the rent I'll have to pay actually doubles. If that plan fails, i will perhaps be able to get enough money untill summer.

I want to go to this, and I was planning to use my tax return on this and a few other things, but with my new dental discovery, I'm not sure it's feasible.  I'm still going to try though.

Yeah, the thing that Oli linked to is really pretty important and also interestingly paranoid.

What I really want to know is who, when asked if they are or ever were affiliated with the Nazi party in Germany, would say "Sure I was! Can I still come?". I mean, seriously, how is this any form of security at all?

I filled this out a few months ago when est told me about it. I especially love the questions "are you now or have you ever been involved in espionage?" and "[during your stay in America] do you intend to commit acts of moral turpitude?"

What the hell kind of spy reads that and thinks "oh fuck I guess they got me on this one!"

I'm concerned by the way that the very first question asks "are you physically or mentally disabled, or a drug addict?". I don't see how they can justify lumping all of those things together. I mean, if you are in a wheelchair but not on any medication or anything like that, then by answering yes to that question you're making them think that you're addicted to opiates. Plus, why is it any of their business?

Grumble grumble stupid America.

SHHH don't tell anyone I might have to fill out more paperwork if America finds out that I'm going to be abandoing babies left right and centre!

Interestingly, one of the questions on that there form asks if you've ever attempted to kidnap a child who was under the custody of an American citizen. They don't care about any other children, just American ones.

Well duh, I mean you're coming to America. If you were kidnapping Nigerian babies they wouldn't care, how many Nigerian babies are there in America?

as much as i like the direction this thread is headed...

i don't know if i (and therefore also jason) will be able to make it to this. we are going to be buying a house sometime in the next few months, so money might be pretty nonexistent for us for a while. i will still try, but i'll probably need to stay somewhere really cheap or sneak in to someone's hotel room or something.

i'll be in chicago in may though... if anyone wants to meet up with me then...
