All   worthwhile music in any period is an experiment - if the composer/performer is not pushing the boundaries somewhere  then the result will ultimately be bland and uninteresting.

i'd mostly agree with this (although i do own a few awesome albums, from various genres, where there's nothing new being done per se, the band/artist is just taking something that's been done, but doing it REALLY well), but a band who intend to push boundaries aren't necessarily viewing their album as an experiment.  there's nothing wrong with experimenting, but not at the expense of having any emotional impact.

sure, experimental music can make you think.  but all i think when i listen to, for example John Cage's Music of Changes, is "he's experimented with a new method of composition, using chance.  it's obviously not a great method, as the end result is horrible."  maybe it's just that i look for different things to get out the listening experience, because to me, it's those hair-on-the-back-of-your-neck-standing-on-end, shiver-down-your-spine awesome moments, combined with the emotional impact of the music that keeps me coming back, and i can't get that out of most experimental music.

i do Music Tech, btw.  our lecturer is a fan of experimental music, and so he tends to slant the few composition modules we do towards experimental areas.

oh, and on-topic (sorry!) - "Bad Devil" by Devin Townsend.

My neighbors having sex.

I'm not intentionally listening to them. In fact, I'm attempting to drown them out with Kyuss.

Damn it all.

Hey guys, I'm not listening to anything. I had a pretty busy day and I'm unwinding. Maybe I'll put on some classical music or something.

It's weird, isn't it? I have a feeling most of us here are constantly listening to music. It's actually a strange experience to listen to not-music. I should probably do that more often. To that end, i am listening to a fan in my computer. It's oddly comforting.

If it's too quiet I get something like tinnitus and my ears will start ringing more often.  Or my ears will fill in the silence with this really quiet hiss-type noise that sounds like it's got a tremolo effect running on it all the time.  Imagine some cassette tape hiss, and that's pretty much what I hear when it's totally silent, but very quiet and undulating.

Not-music is nice, though.  I really like the sound of the wind in trees.

Currently listening: "The Falls" by Hudson Bell.  Seriously, more people should listen to this band.  I've contemplated upping the album I bought of his, but I kind of respect him a lot since he seems like a nice dude.  He emailed me personally to tell me my CD was on its way.  His music is very fuzzy, contemplative rock music with huge, swirling guitars.  He gets compared to Neil Young quite frequently, since most aspects of his music are very similar to Young's.

tl;dr - Check him out.  I'm pretty sure you can stream all of When the Sun Is the Moon on his Last.fm page.

try listening to Sugar, Bob Mould's post-HD project.  and then get the latter HD stuff and move backwards.  took me a while to get into them too.

Eh, don't worry about it.  They had their moments but are one of those bands people talk about more than listen to.

All of my records, alphabetically by album title unless I download or buy something that came before where I am in the alphabet at the moment.  I'm 100% serious, I kind of went nuts for about a year with the downloading and realized that I hadn't actually heard a fairly substantial chunk of the music in my library and I figured this method would be the most likely to allow me to hear it all eventually.  I thought about going alphabetically by artist but didn't want to get sick of any artist that I like (I'm particularly thinking of Guided by Voices here who are one of my favorite bands but I would imagine after listening to them for several days straight they might get a little old).  Anyway, I'm currently almost done listening to From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah by Nirvana, after this it's Lee "Scratch" Perry - From the Secret Laboratory, Tommy Guerrero - From the Soil to the Soul and a 7" compilation called Fuck You Spaceman.

I have the vinyl version of their first box set, the one that includes all of their pre-Scat records material, the vinyl version is one disc longer than the cd version because it also includes Propeller.  I've listened to the box all the way through a couple of times and even just that is a challenge I can't really imagine going the distance and listening to all of it in one go.

I am currently going through my musics and creating playlists of different types of music. Right at this very moment I am listening to some Margot and the Nuclear So and So's- "A Sea Chanty of Sorts"

(it is pretty much my favorite)

Do You Fear What I Fear? by Jennifer Taub and Josh Thoemke, from the album Khar uploaded for Christmas last year, A Very Scary Solstice.

Basically it is a Christmas album with traditional Christmas songs, except the lyrics have been changed to revolve around the H. P. Lovecraft universe: Cthulu, Yog-Sothoth and Shoggoths are all recurring themes.

It is the best thing ever. I think the link might be dead, if people want me to I can re-up it.

Yeah, I think the link is dead. But that sounds like a hella awesome premise for an album.
