I have been listening to a lot of glam recently and yesterday by chance remembered a record I saw in my dad's collection, Lou Reed's Rock 'n' Roll Animal. It is pretty good! I have listened to it thrice since then.

I downloaded "Stay Positive" by The Hold Steady last night because I realised I hadn't yet and I wanted to give it a shot before I make my end-of-year lists so I am listening to that now

Do you have a beer to enjoy with your Hold Steady? It is not by any means necessary but I would say it definitely enhances the listening experience.
I have been meaning to do something similar, people I know have been all atwitter about some band call Passion Pit and their record. Also: I still haven't heard the Marnie Stern record. I know! I have heard a few songs I like quite a bit, but I just never got around to it.

I'm doing some work for a live production here in London called Monster Movie...which I believe is kind of centered around HP Lovecraft.  The writer provided me with a "soundtrack" for inspiration and it is awesome.  This be it:

Screamin' Jay Hawkins : Whistling Past The Graveyard
Nahkoda : The Creaking Door
Revolting Cocks : 10,000,000 Ways To Die
Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds : Red Right Hand
Alien Sex Feind : Now I'm Feeling Zombified
Public Image Ltd. : Memories
Aphex Twin : Come To Daddy
Depeche Mode : Behind The Wheel
My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult : Burning Dirt
The Squirrel Nut Zippers : It Ain't You
The Cure : Lullaby
Portishead : Cowboys
Tom Waits : Black Wings
Ministry : Breathe
Coil : Teenage Lightning Part 1
Screamin' Jay Hawkins : I Put A Spell On You
Revolting Cocks : Caliente
Throbbing Gristle : Dreamachine
Tom Waits : Cold Water
Clint Mansell And The Kronos Quartet : Lux Aeterna
Bauhaus : She's In Parties
Scraping Foetus Off The Wheel : Descent Into The Inferno
The Jim Carrol Band : People Who Died
Xaos : Chemognosis

have you ever heard anything by Stockhausen?

jesus tapdancing christ, it is TERRIBLE.  my lecturer likes to play to our class whenever he gets the chance.  when asked to describe how one piece sounded, all i could come up with was "...like someone raping a 56k modem..."

seriously.  there's "experimental" and then there's "bad, bad shit."

There's also "not getting it".

Of all the things I've uploaded to the mediaf!re thread Stockhausen's Gruppen  (orchestral, not electronic, that one) is one of the most downloaded, and Kontakte  (electronic with added instruments) makes a good showing too.

oh fuck off!!!  how is it that people put these psuedo-intellectual, so called "experimental" genres on some sort of pedestal?  you wouldn't tell someone who didn't like, say, the backstreet boys, that the reason was that they "don't get it" would you?!  and if i played a napalm death album to someone who didn't like it, most people would laugh in my face if i told them "oh, it's just that you don't GET napalm death."  so whats so fucking different about Stockhausen, that i can't be allowed to have a negative opinion of his music without being told that i "don't get it."

and judging albums by how many people download it, is like saying all best-selling records are brilliant.  kid rock sells millions of records, is he a musical genius?

I have to agree. In my country there is some serious mind-fucking going on, as the popularity of a certain "genre" of (stretching the term almost impossibly) music is rising - the turbo folk. You are lucky you have none of that shite over there (wherever you are). The basic argument of retards (the army of) listening to that shite is "How come everyone is listening to it if it's crap? Huh, wiseass?" and "You just don't get it."
I'm not saying that Stockhausen is crap, or good, in fact - never heard of it. Just wanted to say that I agree with the "numbers mean shit" statement.
Thank you,
managment.

Cool your jets, man, it's not that big a deal.  This is just a thread where people post what they're listening to and not commenting on it.  I think Paul's just saying that perhaps more people than you might think have an understanding of the music in which they like it.  This doesn't mean that it's objectively good, it just means you haven't found a situation or frame of mind in which you can enjoy it, so you've chosen not to.

Most of the time I don't mind what my co-worker plays, but god damn I hate Katy Perry.

Also, Spoon, dude.  You might not agree with Paul, but at least hear him out.  Many of my friends can't get into the music I like (namely: post rock) because they don't get it.  All that really means is the tastes they've acquired don't allow them to appreciate what is going on in other kinds of music, or they are just used to a certain kind of delivery of aesthetic in what they listen to.  For example: I have a close friend who listens pretty exclusively to pop punk and hardcore (Rise Against, Black Flag, Anti-Flag, the Dead Kennedys, etc., and I'm going to lump Against Me! in there), and he just doesn't get what Explosions in the Sky or bands like that are trying to accomplish because he's used to aggressive, upbeat music that uses lyrics to convey a feeling or message instead of trying to draw from the subconscious using abstract arrangements.

Uh, yeah.  I think needlessly went into detail about something everyone knows already.  Yeeaaahh...

fair enough, i see what you guys are getting at, but it's entirely possible to completely "get" a certain piece of music, and STILL vehemently dislike it.  now i don't for one minute claim to have any sort of all-encompassing knowledge on their works, but i've heard several pieces of music by Stockhausen and similarly, John Cage, and i've read about their approaches to composition and the theories and ideas they were using.  i find it, for the most part, fascinating.  i understand what they were trying to do.  however, for me, music is about enjoyment of the sound, and emotional impact.  this is why i don't like Stockhausen's music (or at least what i've heard so far) - taken purely as a piece of music, i do not find it enjoyable to listen to, and the fact that it's the result of an experiment makes it seem a little clinical and thus not very emotionally affecting.  i'd happily sit and watch a documentary on how Stockhausen or similar experimental composers composed their pieces, but the music alone is just unpleasant.

that said, i apologise for being a little aggressive back there, i just felt that what pwhodges said came off as kinda pretentious.  as i mentioned though, i haven't heard ALL of Stockhausen's stuff, and when i've got the time to spare to properly give it a listen, i'll download those albums from the mediaf!re thread.

and just so i'm not COMPLETELY off-topic here....  "The Fall of Math" by 65daysofstatic is currently recieving listenage.

Spoon,
Not all music is as shallow as pretty sounds. Sometime music is art, and makes statements beyond the literal.  This is not to say that popular music can't do the same thing, but experimental and avant-garde musics sometimes sacrifice the pretty sound aspect of what people enjoy about music for a more conceptual value.  You don't think of dance music and ambient music as having the same cultural function, do you?  The avant-garde requires a different sort of thinking.  No one could actually listen to all of John Cage's As Slow as Possible; no one lives long enough, and I doubt it would really be all that interesting to do so, but by its very existence it causes people to think about the nature of art and music.

Also: "Lost in the Supermarket" - The Clash

Edit: Okay so you know what the deal is and I don't need to be all blunt about it.  At least you understand the fundamental differences, and realize that the way you think about music and its function is what excludes Stockhausen from the music you enjoy. (Do I sound like a dick? I am really not trying to be but I have a tendency to be terse).

Stuffs.

I understand completely.  I once heard a performance of a John Cage piece, and if it weren't as fascinating in terms of composition and method, I'd have hated it.  I certainly would not listen to it on a regular basis, however.  It would probably drive me insane.

OK, I didn't see that in your first reaction - sorry.  Your lecturer plays you stuff - what's your course?

however, for me, music is about enjoyment of the sound, and emotional impact.  this is why i don't like Stockhausen's music (or at least what i've heard so far) - taken purely as a piece of music, i do not find it enjoyable to listen to,

To my mind his music gets less pleasant to listen to, and also less interesting, through his career.  Indeed, the piece of his I most enjoy  listening to is the first well-known piece, Gesang der Juenglinge,  which I uploaded a couple of weeks ago.  I was also privileged, while working at the BBC, to record the rehearsals and performance of one of his orchestral improvisatory pieces (with him in charge, and I got to meet him); it was fascinating, but the concert/broadcast was a flop.  One of the rehearsals was such that I would love to hear it again, but no way will it have survived.

Quote
the result of an experiment makes it seem a little clinical and thus not very emotionally affecting.

All   worthwhile music in any period is an experiment - if the composer/performer is not pushing the boundaries somewhere  then the result will ultimately be bland and uninteresting.

Quote
i just felt that what pwhodges said came off as kinda pretentious.

You're not the first to say that to me, and probably not the last; but I like to share my knowledge and experience.  I am often rather terse as well, and sometimes that comes over as daunting.  And hey, for pretentious, how about that I have actually performed Cage's 4'33" in concert...
