The concert I sang in last night; possibly the best performance that this choir has given - certainly while I've sung in it.

Duruflé's Requiem (organ version), and a Mass and organ pieces by Widor.

Glenn Branca - Symphony No. 6

A 46-minute piece in 5 movements for 10 guitars, bass, and drums.  Knowing that Branca was doing this kind of massed, symphonic rock in the 80s really makes the post-rock of the 90s seem less revolutionary and more like a bunch of bands inadvertently relearned what Branca’d known for years.

Brahms - Alto Rhapsody

Such rich, luxurious sounds - the fat lady sings in front of a male voice choir and orchestra, yummy!  (My first wife used to sing it - I think this is the first time I've listened to it since we split up 17 years ago.)

Berg - Wozzeck.

Why have I spent my life not listening to this?  I don't really know, except that I guess I got it into my head when young and impulsive that being mad about Bartók disqualified me from liking the Second Viennese School.  Well, I don't like serialism, but this is not serial; and it's so lush and romantic and human, and the orchestral writing looks forward to Hartmann (and back to earlier Bartók in places), and the operatic writing points ahead to Britten (Peter Grimes and Curlew River in particular) - what's not to love and admire?

Look to find it in the mediaf!re thread shortly.

No idea! Never seen it, whatever it is. Haven't seen any substantial amounts of TV in like 7 years.

"Blue Flowers" - Dr. Octagon

If this guy's lyrics made any fucking sense, I would like this even more. I can deal with having an absurdist lyricist with an unusual flow and exceptional beats, though.

Nah, it's not a competition. I just hear people praising Oldham a lot more than Molina and I'm not sure why since I think the latter writes more interesting music (Oldham, for example, has never done anything as unique as 'Ghost Tropic' unless I'm very much mistaken) and lyrics that are generally on par or better. They're both really talented thought to be sure.

Where is the best place to start if one were wanting to get into Mr. Oldham, i know there are a shit-ton of albums so narrowing it down to 2 or 3 would be great.

I'd check out 'I see a Darkness' which, I believe, was his first album recorded as Bonnie 'Prince' Billy. It's pretty excellent, probably my favorite album of his. I haven't heard his newest album, 'Beware,' yet but 'Lie Down in the Light' left me pretty cold. Stick with the older stuff at first, is my advice.
