"Songs in the Keys of F and U" by Stereotyperider.

I've just reviewed it HERE actually, if anyone's got time to kill and fancies a read of it.

"Shit Luck" - Modest Mouse

My mom hates it when I play this song because "THIS PLANE IS DEFINITELY CRASHIIIING" reminds her of 9/11, and she is a 9/11 Republican in the strongest sense of the phrase. I am pretty sure she has an effigy of Osama Bin Laden that she stabs nightly with a poison dagger.

i still don't think it's QUITE as good as "in the absence of truth" (yeah, i'm one of those weirdos who thinks that's their best album), but it is monolithically fucking awesome, and i can't wait to actually get the CD so i can hear it in full quality and peruse the artwork...

I just got a bunch of new ambient/drone type albums and have been listening through them all. So far I've listening to:
Eluder - The Most Beautiful Blue
Caretaker - Persistent Repetition of Phrases
Dead Letters Make Dead Words - Lost in Reflections

All awesome, especially the first and last.
I also just listened to the new Casiotone for the Painfully Alone album. It's pretty much what I expected. That's a good thing.

I'm currently making my way through the treasure-trove of awesomeness that is Strung Out's new b-sides collection "Prototypes and Painkillers."

Seriously, no-one combines metal and punk like these guys (and not in the metalcore or crust kinda way, they sorta mix pop/skate-punk with melodic metal influences), and Jason's lyrics are nothing short of amazing.

Randy Newman's latest album, and the Sibylle Baier album released a couple years ago. WOW! Amazing stuff.

Also, Grizzly Bear's new album. Best of the year, maybe, better than Animal Collective's.

Where is the best place to start if one were wanting to get into Mr. Oldham, i know there are a shit-ton of albums so narrowing it down to 2 or 3 would be great.

The only one I've heard is Joya.

I'd check out 'I see a Darkness' which, I believe, was his first album recorded as Bonnie 'Prince' Billy. It's pretty excellent, probably my favorite album of his. I haven't heard his newest album, 'Beware,' yet but 'Lie Down in the Light' left me pretty cold. Stick with the older stuff at first, is my advice.

Actually, Beware is very good. I was turned off by Lie Down in the Light as well, but Beware has definitely made it up. I don't think it's getting as much attention as it ought to, so go check it out if you get a chance.

I've been on a Pocahaunted kick lately. Beautiful, reverb drenched, vocal heavy music by two lovely lasses. Much in the same vein as Grouper but there's often more going on with this duo. Great stuff!

Curve - Doppelgänger

Garbage should be paying Curve royalties for every record, etc., etc.  Awesome band.  Incidentally, have you heard the early Cranes albums?  They sorta mine the same dark dreampop vein.

Now playing: Loop - Heaven's End reissue.  I know Spacemen 3 loved to slag off on these guys as pale clones.  Certainly, both groups turned their love of late-60s psychedelica and early-70s punk into a similar sound---hell, both covered songs from Suicide's debut album.  But Loop, at moments, sounds both harder (similar to Swervedriver's rock-oriented on shoegaze) and more ambient (where Hampson would take his follow-up project, Main) than SM3.  If they were following in SM3's shoes, they at least bring something new and enjoyable to the mix.

Aha!  I just watched Snatch last night, that song was in it.  On that note, there is a song I've been trying to track down from that movie that I think is called 'Disco Science' or something like that.  It's in the coursing scene (where Turkish and Mickey bet on dogs chasing a rabbit).

Yeah, I've seen the entire 'trilogy'.  Snatch is arguably the strongest, if not overall then definitely soundtrack-wise.  Anyways, it is Mirwais - 'Disco Science'.  Probably my favorite scene in the whole movie, anyways.

"How I Knew It Wasn't Love" - The Bye Bye Blackbirds

Shane and I were walking around in Amoeba Music (the Berkeley location) in October, when he and I happened to converge on the Bay Area for hangouts with Yelley and her boy. We saw this album in the store and said to each other, "Man, I kindof want to buy this album for the cover alone."

We jacked it from the Mediafire thread recently and we have been talking about how it would've been a great fucking idea to do what we had done. It sounds like Crosby, Stills and Nash meets Gram Parsons-era Byrds. Truly excellent shit.
