In order to take a break from listening to that Clues album over and over, I'm giving that Mountain Goats/John Vanderslice collaboration a listen. It's OK but not amazing.

The Bye Bye Blackbirds - Honeymoon.

You may have heard Patrick or Valley Parade talking about this. The talk is well deserved. Not only sweet album art but also a really great songs.

Listen to it too.

Death in the Park by Archers of Loaf.

I've been going through a major AoL period lately; it's like they're all I can listen to right now. I just came to the realization during this past week how fucking amazing they were, especially their first two albums.

I recently had a similar re-revelation about Three Mile Pilot. "Another Desert, Another Sea" is just so brilliant. Possibly better than anything the two bands TMP spawned put out even though I love them both. I'm just glad they have a new album in the works. In the meantime, I'm off to listen to ADAS!

Oh man, awesome, I'm glad you picked this album up. I seriously can't stop jacking off over it, it's just that good.

"Bankrupt On Selling" - Modest Mouse

I love this song. Rather cynical outlook on everything. The song that comes after it on the album ("Styrofoam Boots", Lonesome Crowded West) is a bitchin' followup track.

Rocking some Chopin

What Chopin?  My piano teacher recorded the Op10 and Op25 Études three times (the third when he was 79); also the complete Mazurkas (included one extra one he reconstructed from the surviving sketches) and various miscellaneous pieces.

Just some CD of a 'best of' which always struck me as sort of odd to put out for a classical composer. Or, funnier yet, "BEETHOVEN'S GREATEST HITS" or something to that effect cracks me up. I wasn't aware Beethoven made the radio in his day.

As for right now, I LOVE iTunes shuffle on really eclectic playlists. Last three songs:

Marilyn Manson - The Not-So-Beautiful People (J.G. Thirlwell remix)
Grieg - "Peer Gynt" Suite No. 1 - In the Hall of the Mountain King
Paul Simon - Crazy Love Vol. 2

See, this is my 'favourites - absolute' playlist, which is compromised of only my absolute favourites; that is, songs that I love so much that I can easily put any one of them on repeat and listen to them for an hour straight. Yeah, now it just went to QotSa.

Actually, composers like this were considerable celebrities, and you can see their "greatest hits" in terms of the way selections of their music were published for home performance (the nearest equivalent to radio, i suppose).  When Beethoven was short of money he would arrange "benefit concerts", in which he took the profit himself, relying on his fame and popularity for income.

That makes a little more sense. I usually took it more along the lines of the composer's more famous, well-known works.

Then again, the really popular ones bother me. I used to like Ride of the Valkyries until they stuck it in every goddamn commercial break.

Oh, and I've got Jim Cook's "Sacred Grove" playing currently.

"Walk Away" - Franz Ferdinand

I love the pre-chorus. "I love the sound of you walkin' away, you walkin' away". Something about the melody and the slightly mismatched syllables-to-rhythms thing gets me every time.

So, I took the Hauschka album from the mediaf!re thread, and it is really ace.  It's sort of like a really quaint movie soundtrack, and I am all about those.  Like, if Phillip Glass and John Cage collaborated on an album.  Just fancy.

Now playing: The Venture Bros.: The Music of JG Thirlwell.  Best animated show on TV.  Easily the best TV soundtrack, animated or otherwise.

I seem to remember hearing that he did the soundtrack somewhere else. I'm putting it on my list of music to look for, as I've heard a little of his stuff and really enjoyed it (especially his remix of Manson's "Beautiful People").

Apologies for being a month late on the reply---this is what happens when I don't check the thread.

Anyway, yeah, J.G. Thirlwell is my all-time favorite musician and I pretty much had a glee-fit when I first saw the Venture Bros. pilot and recognized all the songs from his most recent albums.  If you like the V-Bros. music, Thirlwell's work as Steroid Maximus and as Manorexia are right in the same vein (the show's theme is actually an edited Steroid Maximus track).

Incidentally, Thirlwell just put the soundtrack CD up in his webshop (foetus.org/shop); it's cheaper there than the Williams Street shop and doesn't have the ridiculous shipping restrictions that Williams Street does.

I'm listening to Norfolk & Western's album "Dusk in Cold Parlours" at the moment and the track 'Disappear' in particular. I love how it builds up from a quite, haunting folk song into a an absolutely rocking instrumental climax. Good stuff.

Yes, the same Les Paul for which the legendary guitar was named. Amazing to think about how much work he went through to get all of his overdubbing shit done when it's so SIMPLE to do it today. The man is basically my hero in every possible way.

Sometimes I think I like the remixes of All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone more than the original songs.
