The first released track by How to Destroy Angels, aka Trent Reznor's new musical project with his new musical wife. The song is called "A Drowning."

I can't say I'm particularly impressed or anything, but I get an implacable but definitely positive feeling from listening to this song.  It's just so Trent! Does anyone layer sounds together quite the same way Reznor does? Does anyone produce guitars or throw in dramatic quiet piano at the end of songs quite the way Reznor does? I haven't listened to Nine Inch Nails in a while, and I'm not really liable to start again for sometime, but it kind of just makes me happy to know that Trent Reznor is still out there making the music he really wants to make.

I am listening to Glorior Belli's latest album "Meet Us At the Southern Sign," and goddamn if it isn't some of the plain coolest black metal I have heard in a long time

Edit: Seriously, so great.  If anyone cares to give it a listen I will see if I can up it later

"Cavalcade," the new album by The Flatliners.  can't decide if it's better than their last two or not, but it's definitely on equal footing at least, and seems a little bit more varied too...

The whole "Fleurs" by Former Ghosts.

It's pretty good, I really like it. On the "dancier" tracks, it almost sounds like Interpol's Banks was on the vocals. (Listen the track "Mother" for the best example)

See, I think I assessed the song in the same way but came to the opposite conclusion.  I agree that 1) it is indeed "just so Trent" and 2) I wasn't particularly impressed with the song.  My reaction is that the music is something Reznor could make in his sleep; and is pretty much indistinguishable from any number of atmospheric tracks he's made since The Fragile.  And frankly, his wife's voice isn't enough to carry that song.

He's said HtDA will become less like NIN as it progresses, which I'm all for.  I'm a big fan of Trent's and I think he makes great, interesting music when he's properly inspired, but he's been spinning his wheels an awful lot.  I'm hoping that working with Mariqueen will force him out of that rut.  For now, "A Drowning" isn't giving me confidence.

I can tell I'm stoned right now because I just put together a playlist that has some Iron Maiden songs following up Hall and Oates' "Kiss On My List" and the thought process was "This is going to be pretty rad," and "Really, what kind of asshole doesn't like The Trooper?"

Thanks for this, I had no idea it even existed.

I'm sort of having the same kind of disappointment that it's "just so Trent".  There was a time when his projects were interesting and vital, and people like Foetus and Coil wanted to work with him.  I just keep running things over in my head; the bloated "Fragile", statements that "Year Zero" sounded like nothing anyone had ever heard before, when I could name eight or ten different albums that sound like it but are much better.

Still, I'll give it a bit of time, as I do all things Trent.  His "Pretty Hate Machine" through "Downward Spiral" era was a gateway drug for me.  It led to other bands, who managed to stay vital, working, and interesting throughout the last  fifteen years.  As far as Trent goes?  I pull out that older stuff once or twice a year and dust it off; pangs of nostalgia and all that.

YES.

That's pretty much *exactly* how it went down for me, too.  I got into NIN during the Broken era.  Hearing the The Downward Spiral for the first time was a revelation for my 14-year-old self, and I'll always love that album.  But aside from a really good return to form in Year Zero, nothing he's done since has come anywhere near his mid-90s peak.

But damn, am I grateful for him introducing me to the music of JG Thirlwell, David Bowie, Coil, Plaid, Kevin McMahon, etc., etc.

Just been rocking the forthcoming Blacklist Royals album "Semper Liberi" (streaming on punknews.org atm), which is a pretty awesome mixture of The Gaslight Anthem and The Hold Steady, sound-wise.

And now, I'm hearing the Simon Pegg/Edgar Wright commentary on Hot Fuzz :D

Hauss-on-Fah by...uh, Foetus. Don't do that.

Hah, that's one of my favorite of his songs, but it's also really difficult to recommend it since it'd be like, "Hey, check out this fucked-up gospel-inspired track about, uh, I guess, a black family burning to death.  It's awesome!"

And for me right now:

LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening.  Really good, as ya'll should know.

The Fall - Your Future Our Clutter.  It's an album by The Fall.  Of course it's good.

Janelle Monae - The ArchAndroid.  Holy shit, this girl's got talent.  She's R&B like Outkast is hip-hop: it's ostensibly her genre, but she seamlessly augments it with so many different genres/styles/eras that pigeonholing her seems shamefully reductive.  Not to mention she can sing like a demon.  And dance like James Brown.  And she's 24 and her debut backs up soaring ambition with raw talent in a way most musicians won't ever achieve in an entire career.  High contender for album of the year.

Sleigh Bells - Treats.  In-the-moment fun.  There's no way it'll hold up for more than a season, so all the more reason to blast it while it's still visceral and fresh.

Discovered this female-led Australian act while wandering through YouTube links, and finally obtained their first 2 albums. I'd have to say the first is the stronger one, solid top to bottom. My favorite song so far is Setting Sun.

My friend and I decided that this would be the perfect song to play if we were in a car chase with the cops, hella montage-style with freeze frames of one of us driving wearing Ray Ban aviators, all looking like Che Guevara, the other one leaning out the window with a .45 in one hand and a 40oz of Mickey in the other
