"Mixtape" help...
« on: 01 Oct 2008, 19:22 »

Hello all! I was hoping some of you would have some ideas for songs to put on a mix I'm making for my boyfriend as a surprise. I am looking for non-traditional lovey type songs that would be cute for a new romance mixtape gift. I have quite a few I'd like to use, but I thought it would be nice to get some outside input (hehe), and use other songs I may not have thought of. Thanks!

It's probably worth checking out 69 Love Songs by the Magnetic Fields, odds are you'll find 2 or 3 songs that you could definitely use. Also, check out Tiny Mix Tapes, they've done some pretty awesome mixtapes in the past. They might have a mixtape like what you want or the ones their could give you some ideas.

There's always "I Love You" or "Like Someone In Love" by John Coltrane, cept those are instrumentals and I don't think someone would get the point easily.

Again with the instrumentals, Explosions In The Sky have some nice love songs, like "Your Hand In Mine" off of The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place.

A good traditional Love Song is the song "Jungle Drum" off of Emiliana Torrini's latest album, Me And Armini. Personally not the way I like her but you might like it a lot.

Hopefully I helped?

I do have some Magnetic Fields and Explosions in the Sky lined up for this thing: that's definitely the angle I'm going for here. Thanks for the link to Tiny Mix Tapes! I've never seen that site before.

I'll have to check out the Emiliana Torrini, too. I haven't heard her.

Business Time, by Flight of the Conchords.

Actually, most of their songs.

Annie - Heartbeat obviously

And loads of Lucksmiths songs like Adolescent Song Of Mindless Devotion or Sunlight In A Jar or Midweek Midmorning or Guess How Much I Love You or whichever one you like really.

The Undertones' "Teenage Kicks" is absolutely essential. As is "Sex Bomb" by Flipper. Other excellent choices include Built to Spill - "Distopian Dream Girl", The Weakerthans - "The Reasons", Pixies - "La La Love You" maybe, and maybe "Jellybones" by the Unicorns?

I think you should put Phobia's Fuck What You Think on your mix.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

The Undertones' "Teenage Kicks" is absolutely essential.

Nothing says 'I love you' like a song about jerkin' off.

alkaline trio - "clavicle"
mad caddies - "without you" or "drinking for 11"
descendents - "nothing with you"
the gaslight anthem - "old white lincoln"
jeff buckley - "everybody here wants you"
the loved ones - "i swear"

just a few that come to mind.

Is that another Lucksmiths song? I am not familiar with that band, so forgive my ignorance.

Closer by Nine Inch Nails.

Or, more seriously, So Real by Jeff Buckley.

No collection of love songs is complete without God Only Knows. The thing's a classic for a reason.

I'd toss on some Tear Garden.  Romulus and Venus or In Search of My Rose would be good.

Tom Waits of course,  seems obvious.  Something off of Alice or Blue Valentine.

What else?  Something a bitt different...hmm...Blind by Placebo is good and pretty striaght up pop.  30,000 Feet by Assemblage 23 is a nice kind of ultimate ends love song.  I'd probably sprinkle bits of the soundtrack to The Fountain in there too.  That's just me,

You guys are great! I can't wait to download the songs I don't already have, to see if they'll work for the context of the mix I have in mind. Even if they won't work for this one, I'm sure they'd all be great for future mixes.  :-D

Yeah, it is. It's from the album Why That Doesn't Surprise Me. Also seconding the Mirah recommendation. Pollen and Million Miles especially.

I'm going to throw this out there (and in the process raise a thread that hasn't been posted in for about a week)

"Skullcrusher Mountain" by Jonathan Coulton

and possibly "Debra" by Beck.
Nothing more romantic than evil scientists and sleazy songs about wanting to bang you and your sister.
