...is more Forced Listening cool?
« on: 09 Nov 2008, 21:52 »

Hey, I'm back on the forums! (Not that anybody remembers me) I thought I'd return "with a vengeance" by starting up this thread again, as I enjoyed it before. I searched, and the last result I found for this thread was in April of last year, and I haven't seen any discussion of such threads being unsuitable, so I hope this is okay.

Some rules:

-Listen to each song at least twice, and try to get past your gut reactions.
-Try to write at least 75 words on the song. If you have been listening to it on repeat for the last hour, or you really just can't stand it, tell us why.
-1 to 10 ratings are good.
-Link to the song.

I'll start us off with a rockin' track by Count Zero, whom you may have heard in Guitar Hero or Rock Band. This is off of their sophomore release, Little Minds. I don't have a file that I can properly upload anywhere, so I suppose a last.fm link will have to do.

Count Zero - Schizoid Astroplane

It is either about a womanizing alien or gay sex. You decide!

Awesome, I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembered this thread. I found out about Oysterhead through it, and I am eternally grateful to the guy who posted "The Army's On Ecstasy"

huh. i just listened to that song two or three times in a row without realizing it. i guess that means it's prettty good?

well, it was pretty good. until i realized i was on my second or third listen and then it became very very annoying. specifically, the vocals. the music sort of reminded me of Nirvana except good. anyway, i guess i give it a 6/10 because initially it is a pretty good song but it quickly becomes repetitive and a little obnoxious. i think it would probably be a lot better in the context of the album, though. am i right about that?

anyway, here's mine because not nearly enough people (if any) listen to this band:

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

I first read the thread title as "...is more Force Lightning cool?" You can imagine my disappointment.

Sorry to interrupt the thread.

What, the thread's already down here?! Jeez, I turn my head for FIVE SECONDS...

Okay, Clovers. Good things first: The lyrics are funny and cute, the instruments sound good (I especially love the piano track swirling around in the background), and the song is constructed well. My problems with it: I've never been a big fan of fake record static, the vocal effects were annoying, and its not really a style of music I enjoy on a regular basis. I also kept wanting to hear some percussion. Just a light snare drum or a tambourine. It might be able to grow on me, but I listened to it three or four times and still felt the same way. Also, is he singing "all the sudden," instead of "all of a sudden"? 'Cause if he is I want to punch him in the penis. 6/10

Here's an energetic cut from a local (to me) band called The El Guapos. (Yes, I know their name uses terrible Spanish grammar):

El Guapos - after listening to it on repeat for ten minutes, I first thought that I had listened to the song at least five times. Then I looked at my music player and saw that the song actually lasts five minutes - which means that I only listened to it twice. This leads me to believe that they really draw out the song much longer than it needs to be. I like the boy-girl vocals, the keyboards, and the simplistic and happy chorus-ey lyrics though - if this song had been, say three minutes or less - it would definitely make for a solid pop song . 5.89/10 ± .54

I quite liked it. It had some nice riffs in there, and some good chug chuggery - and, as a guitarist, I particularly liked the solo (even though in some places it went out slightly - it's live, and he was playing in 23√7/11 timing, so it's forgiven). The main beef I had was that the parts didn't blend into each other well enough, and some of the good bits only got played for a few bars before they were gone forever to be replaced by a more generic bit I didn't like quite as much - however, this didn't happen as much after the clean part of the solo, which was good. Bonus points for standing out from its peers and not being generic.

7.5/10
