If you play some TT games like Warhammer or D&D or Magic: the Gathering let's talk about them. this is the thread for that kinda stuff.

I thought we would be discussing stuff like Scrabble.

That would be much better.

No, not really. Scrabble games rarely involve slapping a Celestial Dire Spider into another plane of existance with your dick. Or all the problems I've "solved" in Shadowrun via manure bombs and the Invisibility spell.

I was about to comment on how stupid that all sounds, but thinking back to when I played roleplaying games I got a kick out of occasionally playing batshit insane characters who would do crap like that.

The operative word being "occasionally" though. I went back and forth between the crazy character and one who took things a little more seriously.

Here's a question: Are you guys familiar with the term "munchkin"? If so, do you find this playing style as hugely annoying as I did?

My point really was that oddball stuff and out of the ordinary things happen in roleplaying games. A lot of the best roleplaying game stories actually involve things you would never want to see happen in game again.

Meanwhile, in Scrabble, you can get a triple word score or get called out for spelling a word incorrectly and lose points! Woo.

I mean, shit, I like Scrabble and all, but rarely does a game produce an anecdote nor is there really any creative process involved in starting up a game in the first place.

Aside from threads like this, if you think people want to hear stories about your role-playing sessions then you are sadly deluded.

I've got some sweet stories about Risk night with my roommates.  Actually, Risk night isn't so much about playing Risk as it is drinking enough to not remember who you're fighting against for control of Irkutsk.

This would be a good point if it weren't in this thread. I really don't think most people enjoy conversations about roleplaying, just like many people don't like conversations about half of the stuff in the music forums. That said, I don't go into Green Day threads and suggest they should be about Kyuss, even if I'd be more interested in the latter, so I found RedLion's post kind of irritating.

Anyway about your munchkin question, yes, I find them annoying, but that's because a munchkin by definition disrupts the flow of the group they're in. A lot of people hate power gamers, but it's just as possible for a hardcore RPer to go into a group full of power gamers and ruin everything. A good gaming session is just like any other casual social event. It's more likely to turn out well when people go with the flow and enjoy what's offered rather than make the event into something it's not.

Risk and drinking definitely = good times.  I remember being bored back in college and playing a Risk drinking game where we would take a swig every time you had a country taken away from you.

This would be a good point if it weren't in this thread.

*shrug* You commented that role-playing games produce anecdotes while Scrabble does not, but I don't think they are any different in that regard. Like, Scrabble players are just as interested in anecdotes about really lucky/skillful words as roleplayers are in anecdotes about noteworthy roleplaying sessions, and neither sort of anecdote is of any interest to people who don't play the game. Whatever, it's not important.

Anyway about your munchkin question, yes, I find them annoying, but that's because a munchkin by definition disrupts the flow of the group they're in.

I guess I didn't just mean do they annoy you individually, but rather do you find them to be a systemic/chronic problem? I recall just about every roleplaying group I was part of eventually being shitted up by the arrival of munchkins, to the point that one gamemaster actually withheld knowledge of certain rules the munchkins would have loved and only showed that rulebook to me.

I used to do a ton of DnD stuff when I was about sixteen, now I play an 'online tabletop' over skype with a couple buddies. If you're famillar with the risus rule style it pretty much eliminates munchkins/stat players and forces people into roleplaying it's great! I'm currently in a futuristic mercenary one, where I play a really clingy addict that is a fantastic albeit a bit 'heavy footed' get away driver, also useful as a 'seductress'. I play in a fantasy campaign as well, where I play a nervous and super insecure, stereotypical girl that can turn into a cat essentially, she's evolved into a magic user though. And then finally I play a pirates campaign where I play a snooty ambassador from this fantasy/pirate world's version of egypt/greece kinda combo.

I also GM! I GM a steampunk campaign, currently my hapless players are about to discover that poor London is under and unfortunate curse, it will be excellent.

The Steve Jackson game is a parody of the term I was using. Basically it means... well go read 8-Bit Theater; Red Mage is a munchkin.

Munchkining can definitely be a chronic problem. I have a high tolerance for power gaming provided that nobody really gets left out. If everyone makes an effective character and everyone's having fun, no problem. But I do have a low tolerance for things that utterly trash the setting on the way there. This is one of the reasons I am not a big fan of 3.x D&D; it's flexible, sure, but it can get pretty stupid in the wrong hands. I'm fine with people making an effective character, but if you come to me with a multi-classed Succubus Paladin of Yondalla character sheet, I'm afraid I might try beating you to death with my DMG.

This, by the way, is why I rather like 4th edition so far. Yes, the rules are extremely combat oriented and that likely doesn't sit that well with a lot of the people are into heavy RP, but really, I'm fine with that. The rules can often get in the way of RP anyway, and besides, I've never had trouble with keeping Fireball from fucking up my games. It's crap that lets you phase through walls, teleport and play with minds that gets you in the end.

Oh well, I haven't played Warhammer 40K in years, but just last month I bought some new stuff for my army. As soon as I can find the energy and time to actually do it, I will have another infantry platoon and several heavy weapons teams ready for my glorious forces. 13th Cadia, forward to victory! I'm thinking about re-organizing my army into a Ordo Malleus army by adding some Grey Knights, though.

Here's a question: Are you guys familiar with the term "munchkin"?

We are now, thanks to wikipedia.

Warning, long nerd post about to arrive.

So, 2 other guys and myself were the main players in my roommate's Dragon Blooded Exalted game. It was based in the world of Avatar the Last Airbender, except it was 100 years BEFORE the show took place.

We had Uehon, Tal'os, and myself, Yongzheng.

Uehon was an Earthbender (same as caste), Tal'os was a Woodbender, and I was an Airbender. We also had Shin, who was a Firebender that sacrificied himself to save his familiar. So he doesn't come into play for this story.

It was the series finale of our game. The players of Uehon and Tal'os were moving away for college so we were ending the game.
This is also going to be a test of my writing skill, I'll be writing this from the perspective of my actual character, because why not?

It was raining when I came back into conciousness, I looked down and my leg was gone. I vaguely remember it being cut off by the Cheshire Maiden. Felix was on my shoulder, he looked concerned. (Felix was the ghost of a long lost boy the group had saved 30 years in the past, he was trapped in a crystal by Yongzheng in issue 15. -Ed.) I looked to my left and saw Uehon, he was a great bull demon, wielding two axes, to the right was Tal'os, his forehead was bleeding. They were abyssals, concentrated evil. I looked to Felix and heard the whisper in my head. He said I could be as powerful as I wanted if I accepted him. That it would take more than a lifetime to master my talents. I knew that already, for I am at the end of my life. Felix told me he could help. I ate the small Felix statue. Most suddenly there was a burst of golden light as my robes tore from my body in golden butterflies, what was revealed was a warrior with bronze skin and a golden leg replacing the one I had lost. The rain no longer fell on my body, as it glowed with gold. I leapt toward Uehon, he put Tal'os in the way. As he burst into flames with my golden touch, I shed a tear, realizing that I would have to kill my own friends to stop them from becoming corrupted. Just as quickly as I landed, Uehon burst from the shadows and flung me sideways. I used the momentum to strike the Cheshire Maiden Smiling In Blood. She burst into flames with a scream of pain. By the time I turned my back, Uehon was fleeing with the body of Pizzato (A servant he picked up in the city of Shatazar in issue 9 -Ed.). I chased him but he ran straight through a brick wall. One of my friends was damned for eternity, and the other was dead. I looked about the field, seeing the battle between the undead army and the city of Ba-Sing Se. I grabbed one of the spears of the dead soldiers and cut a path through the undead. Finally, I would explode upon using my last essence, saving the city from the undead horde. All that remained was my leg, where my soul rests, forever running around with Felix, jumping through the trees.

And that's the story of the end of Yongzheng Yaozu. And, as campy and cheesy as it is, I named the sword that I use in Kung Fu Yongzheng. The sword and the character were both gifts from my roommate so I felt them fitting to have the same name. In case you were wondering (I bet you were), the name Yongzheng means "forever upright" and Yaozu means "honoring the ancients."

I play a fair bit of Magic and have for a few years; actually made some money off of it but still have yet to travel overseas off it like a few friends have. Might go on an extended hiatus next year, since I figure first-year teachers do not tend to have a lot of spare time. Also have been involved in a whole bunch of other such games, including Warhammer 40K. I stopped playing/painting this year when I moved out of a house with flatmates doing the same (plus less monies), but I'll probably pick it up again at some point.

I started with Warhammer, then moved onto harder gaming systems, like D&D and Shadowrun, I ran Serenity Games, even ran one at a forum meet up of a different webcomic (GITP), then I hit rock bottom, I began to play online Roleplay games. Freeform became my new habit, the extra time to write and not be hampered by rules ment games were a marvellous mix of combat and roleplay with plentiful decription and dialouge.

I'm doing better now, rehab helped. I only write one online RP now.........

Remember kids.... Warhammer is a Gateway Game.... It might seem all cool and grimdark now, but it can lead to harder geekdom's.....

I'm pretty sure in the Game / tech forum there was a thread that addressed this.

In other news, due to the blowout success of Fallout 3 all the dumb fucks who wouldn't give me the time of day for my Van Buren PnP game are begging me to start it again. I've been meaning to, it's so much better than what Fallout 3 turned out to be, and Fallout 3 wasn't bad by any means.

My Dark Heresy campaign is currently on hiatus. This is primarily because a friend and I went to a game/comic retailer's summit in Fort Wayne (whilst there I met the internet. Hi Edith!) and we came back with an armload of boardgames.
We've played a Touch of Evil several times (recommended as is their zombie game Last Night on Earth) and Tomb once (the jury is still out). My friend Bob is in a wargaming mood so looking through my collection for a four player wargame I pulled out Wellington. We played a learning game last week and I'm really looking forward to playing a full game soon.

Also I have spent and am planning on spending waaaay too much money on Monsterpocalypse. I don't normally care for any type of 'collectible' games but this is giant monsters!

I may have a boardgaming problem.

In my Dark Heresy campaign the party consists of Brother Eli - Priest ranked Cleric (Note: this is WH40k so he's not a healing sort of cleric as much as he's a BURN THE HERETIC kinda cleric), Zeke - Outlaw ranked Scum (yes Scum is a career path. Basically a rogue.), Frastus - Regulator ranked Arbitrator (Arbitrators are a cross between the FBI and Judge Dredd), Zarkov - Aspirant ranked Imperial Psyker (Fun Fact: when running a mock combat to get a feel for the system Zarkov accidentally invoked the powers of the warp, became a Deamonhost and wiped out not only the bad guys but the party and good section of the hive city), and finally the meatshield Gunnar - Armsman ranked Guardsman.

The Dark Heresy system is pretty good. It seemed a tad rushed so there are a number of holes in the system but nothing that isn't easily houseruled. Fantasy Flight Games took it over after Games Workshop kicked Black Industries to the curb and FFG's latest errata gives me hope that they will improve the system.

I'm playing a game called "Itras by", translated "Itra's City". It's set in the 1920s, in a surrealistic city where reality looses it's grip the further you move away from the city centre.

It's played with a great dice less system, basically, if you attempt to do something, you ask if you are able to do it and draw a car. They have answers of the form "yes, and", "no, but", or "the conflict escalates". It's real fun, and you also have special cards that the GM puts into motion at times, which allows the entire game world to change (like "everybody suddenly changes gender" or "you are now three hours into the future. Decide where you are, what stuff looks like, and find out what has happened through improvisation". The universe is also lovely weird. I'm playing a arachnophobic field surgeon searching for the evil machine God. Did I say that my boss is a spider? And I'm constantly hitting on one of the other players, the sadistic Ninja that is out boss.

It's my first RPG, and I like it a lot. But I really want to try out D&D and other classic dice games. Any tips on where to begin?

The easiest way to get into playing D&D (or any tabletop RPG, for that matter) is trolling around your area for people who already play.  If there is a group who doesn't shun new people, join up.  Now you've got a group to play with.

I play D&D and D20 Modern.  My group generally meets 1 or 2 times a week, and we are in the middle of several different campaigns.  We are doing a D20 zombie campaign where everyone plays themselves and it takes place in our hometown, a 3.5 campagn where I am playing a lvl 5 Beguiler, a 3.5 where I am playing a Drow matron, and a D20 campaign that I am DM'ing that takes place in hell.

I guess one of the guys wants to start a shadowrun game? Shadowrun seems pretty boring, I don't really want to play, but he's a good storyteller so I'll go with it.

I've become spoiled by playing white wolf's systems, where everything is so descriptive and stuff.

I was taken aback by this until I realized that you'd simply left the 'd' off of 'card'. If the game really resolved things by drawings of cars my character would be so screwed.

Jace,

I think it's the group and the GM that make a game descriptive. What is it about a cyber-punk future with magic, elves, dwarves, orcs, trolls, and dragons that seems boring to you? I'm also curious what you mean by White Wolf system being 'descriptive'.

I pulled out Wellington.

I followed this link and poked a round a bit on that site, and now I really really want to start playing some hex-and-counter wargames, the real thing, not PC-simulations, of which I've been a fan for years.

Do you have any suggestions? I'm looking for either Napoleonic era, late 19th century European conflicts, or WWII games.

CardinalFang (I'm sure I know your name already, just not through the forums),

I was talking to my roommate (who is also participating in the game) about Shadowrun and he was telling me that you have a role, and just that one role, if you spec for that role, you'll do great. If you don't spec for that role that you intend to fill (for example, you take non some non combat skills on a long ranged specialist) that you will suck at all the roles. There isn't really room for combat and non combat skills. Also, there's just so much crap that I had to put on the character sheet. Skills I might never use.

re: white wolf games

You describe what you are doing. There's no such thing as just a punch. There's always some element of description. Like what I did in our Kindred of the East game.

"I tie the rope around the broken piece of wood and then bust out the back window of the car, throw the rope around the vampire and pull him into the car."

Later I would be flung out of the car, I would proceed to pull myself in toward the vampire (he was a giant demon vampire) and then he died so he turned to gunk. Another demon would jump at me and try to headbutt me, I had used my Iron Skin technique earlier in the scene so I ended up headbutting him back before stabbing him with my bare hands.

There's just so much more to describing what you do than, I walk forward 5 feet and cut him. And I love describing how I fly through the air as I throw daggers at my 4 opponents while keeping up my jumping momentum by using their buddies as trampolines.

I'll be happy to suggest something! First, however, how many players and do you want something that's suitable for solitaire play? Oh, also what kind of scale? Tactical, strategic, etc.

Jace,

You may know me as Senor Hamhands.

I get what you're saying about 'descriptive' now. However I think that's more of a group/gamemaster thing than a system thing. If you can take a look at Feng Shui. In that games you get bonuses for describing cool moves and a penalty if you do the same thing over and over plus it's a really interesting world.
I haven't played Shadowrun in ages but I do remember that characters did have set roles ie. Street Samurai, Rigger, Combat Mage, etc but I don't recall that you couldn't take any skill that struck your fancy. Also I thought most White Wolf games your characters roles we're more or less defined by your 'sire' for Vampire or your clan for Werewolf. That doesn't seem all that different to me. Then again i haven't played either game in ages so they may be different now.

Ahhh, yes the good Senor.

The thing about the white wolf games is that you don't normally need skills to roleplay or do certain actions. This doesn't seem to be the case in shadowrun, then again, I'm not even sure how shadowrun works. Nobody really told me anything about it. I'm only sort of playing anyways.

(The guy running the game runs it while he paints miniatures, nobody is really that into it)

Well, Cardinal, as for the WWII, I'm looking for something like the Operational Combat System in terms of scale and scope. Operational manoeuvre warfare with units from battallions to divisions. Guderian's Blitzkrieg looks really interesting, but I'm afraid it could be too complex as a start. It is, though, for sale there for €40, and that's a big plus.

As for 19th century, are you familiar with the old PC game Age of Rifles? I want a game like that, just more realistic and historically correct, to play epic battles in a 200 yards/20 minutes per hex/turn scale.

Solitaire capability would be a big plus, I think it's going to be damn hard to find people to play with, except my brother, but at the moment he's kind of tied up in training for real war and doesn't have time for wargames.

The latest thing amongst wargames is the 'Card Driven Game' where cards are used as either events or to move units and attack. It generally works very well but makes games suck for solitaire play.
Fortunately the Operational Combat System does not use it. Unfortunately I am completely unfamiliar with the series. I have heard very good things about them though.

I highly recommend a game company called GMT. They make excellent games with very good components.Take a look at their Musket&Pike series of games.  Another big plus is that they post their rules online. It's nice to be able to read the rules before deciding to buy. Unfortunately wargames are not the cheapest thing to have. An exception to that rule is some games from Avalanche Press. Namely their Quick Play games retail for $20 US. They are actually decent little games. Avalanche Press seems to have an undeservedly bad reputation on BoardGameGeek. (Full Disclaimer: I was a playtester for Avalanche Press). Even so their Panzer Grenadier series (with 3rd edition rules) is quite popular.

Another site to take a look at is Vassal. It is a java based program that allows people to play board games over the internet. It works very well although it can be a memory hog. Take a look at the modules (games) available for it. One thing you'll notice is that there are many GMT games available. Another popular online game program is Cyberboard. It also works very well but I am a little more partial to Vassal. Cyberboard works better for Play-By-Email where Vassal shines for the online version of Face-to-Face play.

BoardGameGeek has gotten more wargame friendly in the past couple of years so it's become a pretty good resource. Another great site is ConSimWorld. it is not a very pretty site but it is chock full of great info and many game companies and game designers frequent the site. Also give Web-Grognard a look. I think every wargame ever made is listed there somewhere.

I hope some of this has helped. I'm sorry I don't have a specific game to recommend at the moment (Stupid busy weekend) but when I get a chance I'll see what I have on my shelf.

my God there's a lot of links in this

Wow, thanks, Cardinal!

That card-thing doesn't sound good to me. OCS, on the other hand, sounds better, the more I read about it.

I will, as soons as I'm at my own PC again on thrusday, continue my research. Again, thanks for your help!

One of my proudest moments in our current campaign: We were chasing down some sea-hags, one of them was hiding out in a town, and the second was hiding in a cavern system with some lizard men. The townhag was posing as an old blind woman to get us to get their Eye (a stone of trueseeing). the hags usually share this eye, but they just squabbled over it instead. the cavernhag had the eye and we were sent to get it from her.

We got to the underwater cavern system, and took the left tunnel which dead ended. From the rocks sprung a lizardman!

Instead of kicking it's ass, the rogue who went first said "hello?" and we started parlaying with this lizardman. Turns out, he was the lizardmen's old chieftan, since deposed by the hag who now ruled the caverns, and the lizardmen. So we hatched a plan to kill the hag and reassert Selkis' control over his tribe.

The plan went swimmingly and we knocked the hag out, led her out in fetters and stole the eye. Our suspicions about the townhag were soon proved by the eye. We caught her and unceremoniously executed both hags in a field next to the town.

Fast forward to a few months later, and we're out to kill the 3rd hag, the most powerful of all. She's holed up in a fortress-like light tower, teeming with undead minions. We decided to siege the tower instead of breaching it. We set up a basecamp in the forests and on a small hill overlooking the light tower, a pair of catapults.

I had brought our lizardman tribe with us and set our master-at-arms to teaching them to fight in lockstep with spear and shield. We had them outfitted in chainmaille byrnie and half-helm with large shields, and there I made my stand to protect the catapults against the undead onslaught.

The lizardman phalanx worked perfectly, not a single lizardman was slain, and we piled corpses in front of the shieldwall. It was my proudest moment and from that day forth, the little lizardman tribe was now trained, battle-hardened and knew tactics. Soon, they destroyed the forces of the towns around them, and now are carving out a little lizardman nation.

oops!

I was in a little Warhammer 40000 tournament today at a store in Copenhagen. Was good fun!

My army was a 1500 point Salamanders Space Marines force, on the defensive, shooty side. It consisted of:

1 Librarian, with a plasma pistol.

If only I had read up on the special rules for this tourney, I would NEVER have gone for this one. It was set on a planet with some kind of dodgy Warp disturbances, which made all psykers cast their powers at Ld. 7, which basically meant that I didn't get use Gate of Infinity to snatch obejctives. Dang. That was all I'd gotten him for.
Oh well, lesson learned.

10 Terminators, no special weapons.

These guys performed admirably, especially when split into two squads.

2 10-man Tactical Squads

2 Dreadnoughts,

and 2 Devastator Squads, with Heavy Bolters and Plasma Cannons, respectively.

First game was against a very experienced Chaos Space Marines player, and I was absolutely massacred to the last man. Great fun though.

Second Game was against a ridonkulously huge Ork force. 125 orks, on one table! Luckily, none of them were mechanised so they all had a long, long walk across the board, to where I'd dug my Marines in. The game itself was a draw on objectives, but I ended up slaughtering 80+ orks with shooting, and all his HQ and Burnaz with some well placed Dreadnought and Terminator Power Fists before we hit the time limit, so that was great fun as well.

Third was a narrow, narrow win for me, against an Eldar army. It is quite thrilling to play against those crafty little buggers!

So yeah, good, fun gaming day.
