MogontiaCon 08
« on: 28 Nov 2008, 06:09 »

Attention!

There will be a mini-meetup in Mainz, Germany, in late december. There are no real plans (yet), but you are all invited to drop by if you can.

This thread is for information purposes, I will post further details as soon as they are available.

Also I will post pictures and stories after the meetup.

Thank you.

Awesome, you made the thread! :)

Should we start collecting ideas for things to do at MogontiaCon? I'm not clear on whether this is going to be a daytime and/or evening thing, so I guess the entertainment would sorta depend on that. I haven't been to the Frankfurt Zoo yet, but I heard it's nice, and I officially still am a student in Mainz, so I can go to Frankfurt for free with my semester ticket.

I don't really know, are we gonna do anything in particular or just hang out at a nice café/pub and talk - any opinions?

(Also, I might be going on a spontaneous trip to some place nice and warm, but I will be in the area around Christmas, so we'll find some time that it good for both / all of us I hope).

Well, how far from Mainz are you now? Aren't meetups with absolute strangers worth some travelling? ;)

Nothing is worth a grueling-pace 72 hour drive from the Balkans.

I guess I can see that point.

So Dominik, once you're done with working and sleeping (and who really needs those anyway), give us some thoughts to the planning and possible the suggestions / questions that I raised!

Well, too bad, Pat! I guess I'll have to come visit you in Albania, then.

As for plans: the best time would probably be the Dec. 26-28 weekend, yes? At least I'll be there then, and I need to be back home for new year's eve. There are events at the Schlachthof going on that sound quite interesting, friday is surf/swing/rock'n'roll night, on saturday they have a so-called "electro/indietronic/rave-party". Also on saturday there is a 60s Funk and Soul night at the Red Cat.

So, we could meet up on friday and/or saturday for food, then schick&schön, then dancing? Or, alternatively, go to the Frankfurt Zoo rather early, then follow the aforementioned steps?

Also, work is important! Now I can pay the rent for next month; if I couldn't do that, there would be no MogontiaCon.

Well, that sounds like a kickass plan to me! How about this: We get some food (I know both a good Indian and a great Thai restaurant, they are both in the street where I used to live. The Thai place serves the best cocktails in town as well! They have a lot of stuff on their menu that is really good and that you won't get anywhere else), then Schick&Schön, then dancing? And then, if we feel like it on the next day, we go to the Frankfurt Zoo (if we're not too hungover)?

I cannot decide for the life of me whether I'd rather go the the swing / rock'n roll party or the electronic one. I have been to both of them, and they are both quite good. Do you have any preferences, Dominic? Also, do you know if anything else that's fun is going on in town either Friday or Saturday so we might work out which day would be better? I guess you could always go to Caveau if you're feeling a bit uninspired, that place is quite decent.

Also, I need to figure out a place to sleep! Could I possibly crash at your place if I decide you're not the creepy kind of stranger from the Internet, Dominic? Otherwise, I will see if any of my friends is in town and willing to put up with me or where the next cheap hostel is...

Edit: I do see the need of work and jobs, it's just that these can get in the way of the fun.

You don't necessarily have to choose one, they are on two different days, so we can do both! I'm up for either, it just sucks that there is no cool band playing at the Schlachthof. Caveau, of course, is always an option and naturally much less of a hassle than going to Wiesbaden. I will also try to find out what else is going on as soon as I am in Mainz again (tomorrow).

You could, of course, stay at my place, provided that (a) you are not a creepy stranger and (b) you are prepared for extremely primitive conditions. I don't have a couch or anything.

That Thai restaurant sounds great, we should do that!

The 26th is the Friday, right? It seems to come back to me that I already have tickets to go to the Opera for that day. I'll check that.

Ok, I guess I might be a creepy stranger too. :D Although I promise I'm not. I guess we could meet up and if we both find that the other person is NOT a creepy stranger, I'll crash at your place? I am prepared for primitive conditions though, I'm living in student halls right now.

Awesome, let's go to the Ban Thai! We should probably reserve a table because it can be quite full, especially around Christmas. So seems like it's going to be the 27th that we're meeting? What would be a good time for dinner? The train I will be taking arrives at 5.40 pm, the next one at 6.40 (i.e. always 20 minutes before the full hour) and so on and I guess it's a 20 minute walk from the station to the Altstadt.

Mid-march. Cologne.

It's actually hilarious that there's a Mainz meetup since I was there only 3 days ago. Coinkadinks galore up in this.

Awesome, I'll be coming back from school Bonn at the beginning of April, we could totally do a Cologne meetup then if you want to.

When I was still in High School we would often go to Cologne to go clubbing... Which clubs are you going to in Cologne, and what are you doing there in the first place?

Well, evernew, that's just bad timing! Send me a PM the next time you'll be in Mainz! Alternatively, I'm going to visit Munich in March, so I could stop on the way there (or the way back, which incidentally might even be in April) in Cologne.

Well, as I'll arrive in Mainz on the 26th, just tell me when you'll be at the station on the 27th and I'll be there. When you arrive there, do you have any stuff with you, that'd you'd have to drop off somewhere first? If yes, I think we'd best reserve a table for 8 or 8:30pm? Is that too late/too early? Do you have the phone number of the restaurant?

I figured I might arrive in Mainz earlier that afternoon, my friend has a new baby and she invited me to come over to check out her baby. It's weird, I just met her first baby and now she already has a new one. Anyhoo, I'll talk to my friend and see if she is free that day. I'll let you know about that, so we could either meet at the station or directly at the restaurant. Some googling provided me with the phone number of the Ban Thai, so I'll call them right now and reserve a table for the 27th for 8.15. Cool?

I guess I could also crash at my friend's place, so if I do that, I would probably leave my stuff at her place. I'll figure that out and let you know.

Edit: We have a reservation for the day and time I mentioned above.

Cool, then that's settled. Personally I'd prefer if we could meet at the station or maybe Schillerplpatz, if that's better, because I don't know where the Ban Thai is.

Remember when we talked about the cool second hand records-and-book-shop on Kapuzinstraße in the Altstadt? I don't remember what it's called, but the Ban Thai its just a little down the road from there, on the left hand side. But if you feel unsure whether you will find it, I can just meet you at the Schiller (or at the station, depending on whether I'll be in town before meeting you or not). I'll let you know about that as soon as I've figured it out.

Oh, I thought you had already been there. They have a lot of crap, but sometimes you find something good for quite cheap.

The Altstadt is really the nicest part of Mainz, I loved living there, although it could be quite noisy on Friday and Saturday nights when the drunk people went home from the pubs. I don't think drunk people realizse how much noise they're making! The KUZ is right around the corner, too, so it was quite nice to live right next to all the going out-locations. My flat was awesome, it was Altbau, the ceiling was 4 or 5 metres high and there was stucco and a chandelier in every room. My flatmate was quite capricious though and since he had been living there way before me, he had set up lots of rules about how things were to be done in the flat. But on the plus-side, he was quite fun to gossip and go out with, and he really treated me like a family member from the start. When we went out together, we would have the most fun by rating all the men on a scale from 1 to 10 (my flatmate was gay).

TL;DR: you should definitively move to the Altstadt, it's THE place to live in Mainz! I paid like 30 Euros more for rent then in the crappy student halls (where I didn't even have the Internet and a HORRIBLE flatmate), and it was absolutely worth it! Also, living with other people is for the most part more fun than living on your own (in my experience).

I know, living in the suburbs of Mainz is the worst, I started out living in Hechtsheim (in the huge halls where practically every other student lives), and the worst thing was that there was no bus or tram going there after midnight, even on the weekends. Which doesn't make any sense, they would have made a lot of money on all the students going back to Hechtsheim from their nights out. So we would always have to walk back from town which took like 30-40 minutes. It didn't seem that far when you were drunk though.

I've never really been to Finthen, but isn't that right next to Gonsenheim where the Wildpark is? Living in a place where I could feed deer every day would have cheered me up, maybe you could try that. :) Although I now live in a place where I see seals when I go running on the beach, that's nice as well.

Man, I would be so glad if I could walk home in 40 minutes! If I tried to walk to Finthen, that would probably take 3 hours. But that's just a guess, I never tried it. I did pay €15, though, when I took a taxi there once. I haven't seen the Wildpark, nor did I even know it existed. It's probably quite far from where I live, otherwise I would have noticed it.

Well I think you should go, the Wildpark is the best thing about Gonsenheim! (That and the halls there where the best parties would be had). If we find that we are too tired (too hungover?) or too anything to go to Frankfurt on the second day of MogontiaCon, we could go at least to the Gonsenheimer Wildpark! Apparently, you don't even have to pay for it.

Sorry, I think I'm getting too old for that kind of stuff, I sleep quite a lot these days and take naps in between classes and sometimes in classes all the time. I used to be able to go out all night and go to class straight from partying, but I don't think I can pull that off anymore. How about we see how things go and then decide? I might be up for spontaneous not-going-to-sleep-at-all-and-going-straight-to-the-zoo if I'm in good shape.

I just checked, they open up the zoo at 9 am, it takes an hour from Mainz to Frankfurt... but we would have to kill at least 2 hours between the end of the party and going to Frankfurt, do you know any places that serve breakfast this early?

Yeah, I guess we're going to see all that once we get there.

I have no idea, but there must be some place. I mean even in Zweibrücken you can get a pizza in a shady pub at 6am, so I guess in Mainz there will be something similar, or probably even better.

I would assume there is some shady place in the area of the central station that is open really late (or really early), for all the drug addicts and party goers who need snacks at late hours. Most cities have a few of those, at least in my experience of German cities. But let's see how things go, I might just pass out and go to sleep during the night if you keep me out too late. ;)

There is something left to discuss for our upcoming meetup!

I gathered that you do enjoy the fashion talk, is that right? So, let's discuss what we'll be wearing for going dancing, shall we? Let me know what you're thinking, and I'll share my ideas!

Also, now that it seems that we're going to the Schlachthof for the Electronic party, what sort of party is that exactly? Is the music on the EBM / Industrial end of the range, or is it more "normal" than that? If it's the former, I think that I still have a corsage and the obligatory hooker boots somewhere in the back of my wardrobe.

I'm going to wear a black corduroy suit with a white shirt and fake chucks that match the colour of my hair. Plus a button that reads "Zicke" which I found on the train while going to that Monster Magnet show a few weeks ago.

From what I can see the party will be more of the indietronic, as they call it, end of the spectrum. MGMT, Egotronic, Soulwax, Daft Punk, that kind of thing. With a corsage and hooker boots (and, i think, short skirt?) you probably won't fit in, and that might be a good thing!

Hmn. Well, what you're going to wear sounds fabulous to me!

While standing out can be good, all of the skirts / dresses I still own from my "goth" phase are so short that I would not feel comfortable wearing them in a restaurant. Not everyone needs to see my underwear! Although it might mean that we get better service, I don't know ;) . Also, the zipper on one of my hooker boots is broken and won't close any more and I don't think I can get it fixed in time for the meetup.

Unfortunately, I don't have my favourite top for going out right now because I swapped a few things with my flatmate for the duration of the holidays - it's a halter top made from dark blue silk that leaves the largest part of the back uncoverend and has a string of pearls running across the naked back from the neck to the small of the back. That might be too fancy anyway. So, I'm thinking I could either wear my flatmate's mini-skirt (it's the type of skirt English girls like to wear when going out) or my favourite jeans which my ass looks supposedly pretty good in (that's the reason why my exboyfriend bought them for me), either with heels or boots (not the hooker boots, sadly).

Top-wise I'm thinking maybe a tight black one with a Princess crown stancelled on it??

You are allowed to pick! ;) (Also, I'm pretty much unable to make a decision, I would probably just flip a coin in the end.)

uh... Why the walking?? It's really freezing here, and I guess it won't be much warmer in Mainz. It's too cold to walk! I thought we were going to take the öffentliche Personen Nahverkehr aka ÖPNV aka the bus or the train to get to places??

( I also managed to come up with an outfit that is the right combination of comfortable / ok-looking / appropriate for the weather. The weather was a huge limitation, I also brought all the wrong clothes home with me. But the things I really wanted to wear are probably not warm enough anyway - while I live in the UK I have not yet mastered the trick British girls seem to know how to do - a lot of them seem not to have any feeling at all in their legs, which allows them to wear the tiniest skirts without any tights when it's below 0, and amazingly there legs do not turn blue. I've yet to find out how they pull that off, I suspect there might be a correlation between the amounts of clothes worn and the units of alcohol they ingest? Either that, or they use the stuff on their legs people use for their cars to prevent them from freezing up. -  Forums, enlighten me!)

Well, as long as you're not dragging me through the cold for miles.

I also finalized my travelling arrangements: While my friends Chris and Kathrin are driving the exact same route at the right time, they are already transporting a toddler who is teething, a 2-month-old baby, a mother-in-law and a cat. Since I am slightly ill (don't worry, I'm not contagious), I think I'll pass on the house of fun and take the trian.

Yeah, about MogontiaCon Reloaded - what day would be good for you, Dominic? It would be great for me if we could do it in either Bonn or Cologne, I'm pretty broke right now, if that is at all a possibilty. Would you come along, evernew, or are you in too much pain?

I'll be in Bonn until the 13th, I'll be going back to Scotland that day. So anytime before that would be good! I have plans on the evenings of the 10th and the 12th, and I think I'm doing something on the afternoon of the 8th, but I'm pretty flexible apart from that.

I would prefer to do an activity during the day and/or the earlier part of the evening (like, before midnight) if that's cool for you guys - I have a sleeping disorder, and after almost two months of sleeping extremely bad and not for longer than 2 hours at a time, I'm slowly getting back to a somewhat normal sleeping pattern with the help of pretty potent sleeping pills, and I don't really want to screw that up again. Like, I don't mind staying out longer if we're having fun, but I'd prefer to keep that optionable. I hope you understand!

I can also bring some Haribo candy if you're into that- it is made in my town, so people from Bonn have the obligation to bring it along with them, and we have a factory outlet here where the stuff is really cheap. I just stocked up on Haribo today for future essay crises!

Well, I'll have to see a doctor on monday about my foot. I hope I'll be able to walk again properly by next weekend.

Excellent, we can be cripples together!

You're the bottom part of Verbal Kint (from "The Usual Suspects") with the limping foot, I'm the top with the crooked arm.

I'm free pretty much whenever.
Haribo sounds excellent.

I jumped down from too great a height and landed too hard. Now my foot is all fucked up and hurts.

Soo, are we meeting this Sunday? I'll probably go to the theatre with my godson at 6 pm *, if I can get tickets, and he'll expect me to go home with him after the play so he can beat me at some videogame, but we could do something in the afternoon if Dominik can travel!

* I swear I'm not boring this child by taking him to the theatre! It's "Kalle Blomquist" by Astrid Lindgren, as a play, and it was his idea!

Would that be Bonn or Cologne?

This Sunday eh? Okay.
I vote for Cologne. Mainly because I have limited travel ability and can get to Cologne easier.
